Background: Despite Thompkin’s pedigree, he was never forced to play the game. His father, 6-foot-7 Howard, was a 9th round pick in the 1981 NBA draft out of Wagner, and his mother, 6-foot-2 Marsha, was a forward at New York Tech. Thompkins naturally developed a love for the game while watching his father play pick-up games and sprouted onto the national recruiting scene early on in his high school career. At the beginning of his junior season, Thompkins had high major programs Georgia, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina calling for his services.
Many pegged Florida as the team to beat and thought it only be a matter of time before the then defending champs would land Thompkins, but his time at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia gave him a new perspective on the distance factor in being away from home. This led him to transfer back to Wesleyan High school where he played his freshmen and sophomore seasons. The location of Georgia University gave Thompkins what he wanted most to be close to home. His senior year at Wesleyan proved successful as he took them to the Georgia state title while averaging 27.5 points and 14.7 rebounds per game.
The Blue chip, top 25 player was viewed as Georgia's most important recruits since Jumaine Jones entered the program 10 years ago. As a college freshman Thompkins became Georgia’s leading rebounder and finished second in scoring while earning a place on the SEC All-Freshman team. Thompkins followed that up with a banner sophomore year, yet despite this success, he surprised many with his declaration to stay in school. NBA draft observers had him pegged for the 2010 NBA draft, but Thompkins simply felt his skills weren’t ready. Few doubt he will be a 4-year player, so those Bulldog fans in Athens better enjoy this season. There’s good chance it will be his last.
