Greg Smith 2011 Underclassmen E-mail
Written by Matthew Maurer
  • Name: Greg Smith
  • Position: Power Forward
  • Height: 6-10 (2.08m)
  • Weight: 250 (113kg)
  • College Team: Fresno State Bulldogs
  • Nationality: American
  • Birthplace: Vallejo, California
  • Birthdate: 1/8/1991
  • Drafted: Declared for the 2011 NBA Draft but was not drafted by an NBA franchise...

Background: Unlike many of the players that reside within the WAC, Smith is one of the few in the conference that has a stellar prep background. He seriously raised his profile playing for the Pump N Run AAU program, where his team included high profile players like Larry Drew (North Carolina), Jrue Holiday (NBA) and David and Travis Wear (UCLA), to name a few. Major Division I programs Arizona, Florida, Fresno State, Washington and Kansas State quickly offered scholarships to Smith.

Arizona initially gained his commitment, as the school’s history and big-time college basketball atmosphere were appealing, but Smith felt torn as his relationship with Fresno State’s assistant coach, Senque Carey, was special to him and his family. This was possibly compounded by his need to be close to home, and Smith soon switched his commitment to Fresno State.

With his college destination finalized, Smith’s main focus wasn’t hitting the court, but hitting the books. He left Edison High School to finish his senior year at Westwind Academy in order to get a better footing on his academic standing. Thankfully, Smith’s final year of high school was productive both off and on the court as he got grades in order while averaging 26 points, 14.4 rebounds and 6 blocks per game, and earned all-state honors.

The top 50 red chip recruit entered Fresno State as one of the program’s biggest recruits since former NBA big man, Melvin Ely, left school seven years ago. Smith earned the WAC Freshman of the Year award last year, leading Fresno State in field goal percentage and blocks per game.
