Jay Williams E-mail

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Has a strong NBA body that when penetrates enables him to absorb contact and on many occasions over power smaller point guards ... Has excellent court vision really sees the floor well and can set-up teammates in a variety of ways via driving the lane and dishing or feeding the post ... Has an important trait for point guards in that he thinks the game from a mental standpoint ... Has a nice 3-point shot which he is capable of hitting in transition , spotting up, or shooting off the dribble ... Competitive plays with a lot of heart and tenacity ... Nice mid-range game this really helps when the defense plays him for the long range jumper or penetration ... Excellent at creating offense either for himself or his teammates ... Has some impressive hops for a point guard can really rise ... Plays solid defense simply harasses opposing guards has wonderful lateral quickness making him hard to take off the dribble ... Owns a nice crossover and a quick first step to get past most defenders ... Excellent ball handler can break down most defenses and recognizes when double teams are coming ... Plays very well in the open court where he is a good finisher in transition and can score in a variety of ways by either reverse lay-ups, or a quick dunk ...

Weakness: Can play out of control sometimes as he tries to do too much with the ball ... Because he is such a dominate player offensively often teammates stand around and watch the show so he is still learning how to get teammates involved better ... Has a tendency to make bad decisions with the ball resulting in a turnovers ... While he gets to the line he isn’t the best free throw shooter where he shoots below average for a player with his ability so upgrading this would automatically increase his scoring average by 4 points ... Like many great players he has confidence but often he left opposing opponents, coaches and fans with the feeling of arrogance ... Like most young point guards he is still learning how to develop a better understanding in terms of controlling the tempo ...

J-Will was one of the best. I always loved to watch Duke play and he was a one man show. It is a shame about his accident. Man we miss Jay and we want him to either play again or have a good career outside of basketball as he is pretty smart. Good Luck Jason from your friends the Duke fans.
