2007 Pre-Draft Scouting Report by Matthew Maurer

Assets
Excellent ball handler for his size and an explosive first step enabling him to take most defenders off the dribble … Moves very well without the ball in his hands … Offensively McGuire does a decent job creating off the dribble … Above average passer with good court vision … Defensively he has all the physical traits to be a premium defender with quick hands, lateral quickness and a great wingspan… Creative when slashing to the basket where his body control allows for acrobatic forays to the hoop … Excellent rebounder out of position and in area as his long arms and quickness ensure a good amount of boards … Tremendous help defender who provides a shot blocking presence … Even more impressive is that he keeps most of his blocks in play … Athletically he is blessed with great quickness and explosive leaping ability … Does a great job of creating contact to draw fouls … Is a tremendous finisher in transition or running the break where he can finish with flair … Shows decent shooting touch 16 feet from mid-range to keep defenders honest …Shows some ability to hit three point shots when his feet are set … Aggressive player who possesses the killer instinct to take over games…

Liabilities

Perimeter shooting can go through extreme periods of streakiness … Lacks the upper body strength to finish plays after absorbing contact … While his versatility does create unique mismatches for him he doesn’t always take advantage … Focus must be worked on regarding ball protection as he can be turnover prone … Tries at times to go for the spectacular play rather than keeping it simple … Ball handling is a tad bit high so he must work on dribbling lower to the ground … Very poor free throw shot … Shooter who rarely takes advantage of contact he draws in the paint … Can be out of control on his drives to the basket … Despite his age McGuire lacks a great basketball IQ in that he has gotten this far on athleticism … Shot selection has improved but remains questionable at times … Still learning what his strengths are offensively as he can stray away from them in the flow of a game … Many wonder if he has the maturity level needed to deal with the pressure of being a pro athlete…
