2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Possess athleticism rarely seen in a player his size ... Does a great job of drawing fouls on his defender ... Really has become more aggressive in taking the ball to the basket ... Has soft strong hands that enable him to catch most passes thrown into the post ... Towards the end of the year Powell became much more of an offensive force ... Great finisher around the basket where his athletic gifts make for some impressive dunks ... Excellent out of position rebounder due to his long arms and leaping ability ... Has many of the physical tools needed to be a shot blocker: quickness, arm length, and mobility ... Brings a great deal of energy and enthusiasm to every game ... This mobility allows him to be a solid help defender... Good free throw shooter... Extremely mobile. Runs the court with such ease for his size ... This past season, his work ethic really showed when he came back to school stronger ... Has three point range on his jumper ... Not bad at taking bigger power forwards off the dribble although he didn't do it often ... Shows a decent soft touch on his lay-ups and hook shots ... When confident Powell can play at a high level few can match ... Has the potential needed to intrigue an NBA GM into taking him in the draft... Great shot selection in that Powell doesn't try to stray away from his strengths offensively ...

Weakness: Has improved greatly since last season but Powell will need to continue to add more upper body angth ... Has yet to fully mature into a position as he lacks the perimeter skill to play small forward and the bulk to play power forward ... Post footwork remains awkward and unrefined ... Defensively he will need to work on denying opposing power forwards from setting up in the post ... Could stand to expand his perimeter shooting from mid-range ... Like most young player he has been terribly inconsistent in his performances ... Still learning how to think the game as Powell doesn't always make sound court decisions ... Above average rebounder but lack of strength tends to work against him ... Physical post players can easily box him out... Will need to improve his 3-point jumper although he has worked to become more consistent... Ball handling is adequate at power forward but will have to be upgraded if he plays small forward ... Back to the basket moves are still a work in progress ... Powell tends to play overaggressive when playing defense which leads to picking up quick fouls ... Puts the ball on the floor in order to establish rhythm instead of taking the ball right up ... Double teams can force him into throwing poor passes which usually result in turnovers ...
