nba The Draft Review - The Draft Review

Strengths: Defensively, Dove has many of the physical tools needed to develop into a competent defender on the next level, such as length, lateral quickness, long arms, swift hands and versatility to defend multiple positions … A solid finisher in traffic thanks to his body control and floaters to convert … Owns a solid first step to gain separation from his defender … Uses his long arms and foot speed to play passing lanes for steals … Possesses the typical NBA ready body and size that teams covet at the small forward position … Potentially, he has a good amount of growth left to work with … Athletically, he is a quality athlete blessed with good quickness and explosiveness … With his athleticism and mobility, Dove is a decent rebounder out of position … Quality finisher in transition who has the body strength to convert after absorbing contact … Possesses a decent basketball IQ to see plays as they develop and stop them on defense … Great attitude in that Dove takes pride in his defense and is never intimidated or frustrated when defending his assignment …

Weaknesses: Although he shows decent shooting touch from the perimeter he lacks any real consistency … Some of this is due to his shooting mechanics which are in need of refinement - he has a slow release due to a wind up motion … Still learning how to shoot off the dribble from mid-range - every shot is either a drive to the basket or a three point shot when his feet are set … Semi tweener who doesn’t really define a true position in the NBA with his skill set … Although he’s clearly better suited for the small forward position he lacks the offensive ability to contribute from the perimeter consistently … Lacks any real confidence in scoring - seems content to defer to teammates and get his points on hustle plays …While he usually has the size on his match-up, his ability to take advantage of this by posting up is often fruitless … Average rebounder who should get more with his athletic ability, but lacks instincts and gets boxed out rather easy … Defensively, Dove tends to get too aggressive and gets into foul trouble a decent amount of time … Settles too often for perimeter shots, neglecting to drive to the basket and create contact … Some of this could be due to his average ball handling, which to his credit has improved this season, but remains a skill in need of improvement … Not much of a passer due sub par court vision …
