Background: Growing up in the Port Richmond area of Philadelphia, Murray was anything but a shoe-in for a college scholarship. By the time he entered junior high, Murray appeared to be a problem child, running with risky friends and skipping school. In one school year Murray cut school 150 times, which more than explains why he repeated the 8th grade twice.
Murray’s mother, Latoya, urged the family court to refer her son to Glen Mills, a school for court adjudicated youth. It was there that Murray tried his hand at organized basketball for the first time. Craig Mellinger, Glen Mills head coach, attributed much of Murray’s newfound ability to plain hard work. Despite not playing in the usual AAU circuit, Murray’s reputation grew in the summer before his senior year while at the Reebok camp.
As a top 50 blue chip prospect, schools such as West Virginia, Pittsburgh, St. Joseph’s and La Salle waited in the wings with scholarship offers in hand. Most believed the player was a lock for West Virginia, but the draw of staying home was too much to overcome. In the end, La Salle beat out the impressive schools and gained a commitment from a national recruit (the last La Salle recruit to be ranked as high as Murray was Rasual Butler).
His senior year Murray averaged 17.5 points, 12.4 rebounds and 3 blocks per game while leading his Glen Mills high school to its first PIAA class AAAA playoff berth since 2004. In his first year at La Salle he earned Atlantic 10 conference All-Rookie team as he led the school in blocked shots and finished second nationally among freshmen.
