2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Ming is surprisingly very agile, and mobile for a player his size can run the floor well often can beat a lot of slow footed centers down the court … Good shot- blocker who can block or redirect shots from opposing players … For his age he is, a relatively smart defender doesn’t bite on pump fakes … Defensively he has all the physical gifts to be a great one lateral quickness, great timing, quick leaping ability, and not to mention a long wingspan ... Height, how many 7-5 players do you know that are decently athletic ... Good rebounder but might not be a dominating one in the NBA due to some his lack of upper body strength ... Age at only 21 years old he has worlds of potential ... Has shown the ability to be a real good face up shooter, who can hit from 18 feet out and even the occasional 3-point shot as he proved in league play ... Good passer at his position does a decent job seeing double teams ...

Weakness: Rebounding while good could stand to use a little bit more improvement but this is more to his lack of upper body strength, which is probably the reason that he doesn’t hold his position on the blocks well. Like the other "P" word (potential) he also is a project who is still learning the ins and outs of the game ... Inexperience is another problem in that he hasn’t really faced loads of competition at his position ... Although when he has to his credit he has done good but other than Wang Zhi-Zhi (36th pick by Dallas in the second round) there really isn’t another quality big man in his league … Not what you would call a physical center more of a finesse center ... Although there are speculations that he will be cleared for the draft, his club Shanghai Sharks could make it difficult for a NBA team to draft him ... Needs to kick the ball out of the post quicker when double teams occur as he turnovers plauge him ...
