Lucas actually signed with the American Basketball League's Cleveland Pipers in 1962, owned by a young George Steinbrenner.
Lucas did not arrive to the Royals until the following year, 1963.
Lucas became the 1963-64 NBA Rookie Of The Year and was later a three-time First Team All-Pro for the Royals.
Lucas was a certain pro star. He had led Ohio State to three stright NCAA Finals, including the 1960 national championship.
