Jerry Tarkanian quote: "t he greatest player I ever recruited (Raymond Lewis) was also the greatest player who ever came out of Los Angeles."
Biography
Ray Lewis declared hardship to enter the 1973 NBA draft as a sophomore out of Los Angeles State, where he scored 73 points in a single game. In rookie camp Lewis dominated Sixers' Doug Collins, the 1st pick overall that year, by scoring 60 points in the 1st half. The 2nd half was called off by coach Gene Shue.
The publicity from the Lewis-Collins match-up led Lewis to attempt to renegotiate his Sixers contract, but he was unsuccessful and walked out. In 1975 Lewis returned to camp, but walked out again.
Lewis died in 2001 from complications of a leg amputation. He never played a single game of NBA ball.
