pavel-podkolzine The Draft Review - The Draft Review utah95-04 The Draft Review - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Extremely mobile for a player his size as he runs the floor with ease ... Shows solid and still evolving low post moves such as the turnaround jumper and hook shot ... Physically Podkolzine takes up a great deal of space at 300 pounds and does a great job of clogging the lane ... Really has a knack for rebounding for a player with his limited game experience ... He boxes out his man well and shows good ball location skill to locate rebounds ... Possesses good range on his jumper for a player his size and can shoot out to 15-16 feet with some consistency ... Unselfish and is a much better passer than advertised ... Is a solid finisher around the basket due to his soft touch ... Shows above average lateral quickness enabling him to cover a good amount of ground defensively ... Upside is tremendous for a player with his physical ability and age ... Surprisingly he possesses good relation to the basket skills ... Above average ball handler for his size although he's not gonna take too many opposing centers off the dribble ... Extremely coachable, since his move from Russia he has improved considerably ...

Weakness: Some have been questioning his durability because he missed a few games due to an ankle injury ... This injury really limited his progression for a good portion of the year ... Doesn't really play with the intensity and aggressiveness one would like with his size ... Low post moves are still in the developmental process as he feels more comfortable facing the basket ... Doesn't have the big game experience that his international brethren have ... Fundamentally he is still learning the nuances of the game ... Court awareness isn't what it should be during games ... Despite his size his lack of confidence in his low post moves prevents him from taking advantage of mismatches ... Defensively he shows above average instincts but lacks the experience needed to use them ... Will be a project for any team drafting him and wont be a major contributor for a while ... Can be a little foul prone when having to guard physical players ... Not much of a free throw shooter ... Doesn't do a great job of using his size to draw contact in the lane ...
