Strengths:
Possesses legit three point range on his jumper that he can make with regularity … Moves well without the ball in his hands … Excellent free throw shooter … Quality mid-range shooter from 18 feet from the basket … Quick release enables him to make shots with little time needed … Really understands how to utilize jab steps and hesitation moves to get defenders off their feet … Excellent passer whose court vision and unselfishness enables him to create scoring opportunities for teammates … Does not back down as he plays with a chip on his shoulder and is highly competitive … Extremely confident shooter who wants the ball in his hands in crucial moments … Excellent finisher in transition who understands how to use his length to his advantage … Not an explosive athlete, but is a better than given credit for … Versatile player whose skills and unique height give him the opportunity to play the small forward and shooting guard positions, and creates mismatches frequently because of this … Solid ball handler … Great basketball IQ allows Calathes to make smart, sound decisions on the court … Quality rebounder despite his perimeter preference … Savvy player who understands all the nuances of the game … Unlike last season, Calathes has become much more consistent with his play … Despite being a shooter, he has learned how to develop free throw opportunities by drawing contact from his defender …

Weaknesses: Physically, Calathes remains underdeveloped with below average upper body strength … Body type unfortunately suggests that added weight could hinder him athletically … While his height and ability to play on the perimeter allow for smaller mismatches, Calathes' skill set isn’t very polished when in comes to post-up or back to the basket situations … This often prevents him from being able to effectively finish after contact occurs … Average 1st step prevents him from being able to consistently take opposing defenders off the dribble … Perimeter defense is decent but will require upgrading, as Calathes doesn’t have the lateral quickness needed to guard explosive match-ups … Has a tendency to let his emotions get the best of him during games … Is too satisfied with settling for perimeter shots instead of driving to the basket … Defensively, he can be a bit too aggressive when going for steals, which can lead to quick fouls … He is close to the ceiling of his potential …
