Jim Krebs was a notable collegiate player who represented Southern Methodist University as All-SWC in 3 consecutive years from 1954 to 1957. Additional highlights of his collegiate career include his face off against Bill Russell, where Krebs outscored him, in the 1956 NCAA semifinals. The following year he earned consensus All-American and went on to have a solid 7 year NBA career. Although foul prone and aggressive on the court, Krebs was well liked by his teammates.
He escaped tragedy in 1960 while aboard the Lakers' team plane when it crashed, but was suddenly killed on May 6, 1965 at the age of 29 (one year after his retirement) when he suffered a fatal head injury from a fallen tree limb while helping a neighbor with yard work. His wife was pregnant at the time.
The Draft Review remembers Jim Krebs.
