2007 Pre-Draft Scouting Report by Matthew Maurer

Assets
Shows great perimeter shooting ability with range out to the three point line … Great motor; constantly moves around and makes cuts to get open … Has improved his court vision greatly the past couple of seasons … Newley shows good signs of being a solid passer … In addition to his great scoring numbers he does a good job of creating for his teammates off drive and dishes … Has the know-how to get his shot off no matter his match-up … Aggressive player that doesn’t shy away from contact and will not back down from a challenge … Possesses a decent feel for the game, you can tell he’s been around it all his life… Really shows up in court decisions, rarely does he have mental breakdowns … Underrated athlete that can drive to the basket and finish with flair … Despite his age, Newley still has a good amount of growth as a player, and because of this has the potential to improve on his deficiencies … Above average rebounder … Excellent finisher in the open court where he can pull from mid-range or slash to the basket.

Liabilities
Upper body strength needs improvement as he struggles to finish after contact occurs … Needs to protect the ball better, has a bad habit of dribbling too high … This carelessness leads to a good amount of his turnovers … Gets a little infatuated shooting from the perimeter instead of taking the ball to this basket at certain points of the game … Defensively he doesn’t always commit to playing at a high level … While a quality athlete he lacks the explosive first step to take quick defenders off the dribble … Isn’t nearly as effective in a half court offense where creating off the dribble is a more essential skill than the open court freedom of a run and gun style of play … Has good physical tools to be a competent defender but his anticipation skills, defensive footwork and lateral quickness remain a work in progress … Lacks the high level playing experience that his international counterparts possess …
