2007 Pre-Draft Scouting Report by Matthew Maurer

Assets
Possesses the best post footwork of any prospect in this year’s draft … Moves effortlessly around the post while maintaining his balance …Shows a soft shooting touch around the basket … Back to the basket moves are quite advanced despite his age … Owns every moves from a turnaround jumper, up and under, hook shot, drop step, baseline spin and a assortment of shoulder fakes and hesitation moves … Hands are strong and soft enabling him to catch any pass thrown into the post despite pressure from his defender … Excellent rebounder in his position due to his effective box out skills … Fundamentally sound player who understands the game … Does a great job of getting his body wide to give passers a big target … Excellent free throw shooter for his position … Equally effective shooting with either hand in the post … Hard player to double team as Hawes is an accomplished passer blessed with above average court vision … Furthermore he understands how to use his height and keep the ball above his waist away from shorter players … Has the ability to stretch the defense and shoot 16 feet from mid-range … Although lacking explosiveness, his timing enables him to be an adequate shot blocker … Competitive center who will show a mean streak when being challenged with physical play by his defender …

Liabilities
Athletically, Hawes isn’t a NBA caliber athlete possessing average explosiveness and mobility … Must continue to add more weight and body strength to his frame … Struggles to maintain his position in the lane without getting rooted out … This often leads to him settling for perimeter shots instead of backing his man down … Can struggle defensively when having to defend athletic opponents …At times can be prone to making poor decisions in games, but to his credit this is to be expected with many young players … Foot speed needs to be improved to become a more effective runner of the court … Lacks the lateral quickness to be a good out of position rebounder … Can struggle to absorb contact and finish in the post … Finesse game doesn’t allow him to apply pressure on the defense by drawing fouls … Tends to rush himself at times when he is executing post moves … Will not be much of a help defender in the NBA due to his average athleticism … Many project him as a solid pro but few feel that his long range potential is great, leaving some to wonder how much more he will improve …
