2007 Pre-Draft Scouting Report by Matthew Maurer

Assets
Possesses a NBA ready body capable of withstanding the rigors of the pro game … Mobility is good as he can run the floor very well despite his size … Post defense is quite advanced; does a great job of keeping his body between his man and the basket … Really fights to push opposing players from the basket when they try to cement themselves in the paint … Great rebounder who has all the fundamentals needed to be effective … Boxes out well; quick lateral movement allows him to obtain rebounds out of position …Team player who was capable of starting for most NCAA teams but played his role with no disruptions … Understands how to use his body to convert around the basket despite the defensive pressure that is applied … Great post passer who consistently looks for the open man … Excellent finisher around the basket due to his decent leaping ability and body control … Richard has above average hands that allow him to catch difficult passes … Works well creating offense for himself off pick and rolls and screens … Solid finisher around the basket … Blue collar player who enjoys doing the dirty work … Possesses great court awareness and understands what his strengths are and rarely exceeds them …

Liabilities

Although quick, Richard lacks great leaping ability needed to rebound or score over big opponents … Back to the basket skills remain unrefined with little signs of improvement this season … Could stand to expand his shooting from mid-range where he is virtually a liability when far from the basket … Below average explosiveness doesn’t allow him to make an impact on the game as a shot blocker … Has a bad habit of putting the ball on the floor to establish rhythm on put-backs and lay-ups … Hands have improved this season but aren’t soft enough to catch passes without fumbling … Potential is still present but Richard is closing in on his limits … Despite not getting starter minutes Richard can be over aggressive and pick-up fouls in a hurry … Some have questioned if he has the physical qualifications needed to defend bigger forwards in the NBA …
