2007 Pre-Draft Scouting Report by Matthew Maurer
Assets
Runs the court exceptionally well … Excellent foot speed enables him to create from the perimeter using his first step to take his defender to the basket … Post footwork is very good as Davis has little problem keeping his balance … Good finisher around the basket who has soft touch … Does a great job drawing fouls by creating contact in the post … To further enhance this skill Davis uses his body strength to consistently absorb contact and convert … Sees double teams very well and able to quickly pass out to open teammates … Defensively he utilizes his body and lateral movement to keep his opponent between him and the basket … Ball handling is quite refined for his position … Excellent rebounder in position where he uses his body to effectively box out his man when getting boards in his area … Shows the ability to shoot from the perimeter out to 17 feet from mid-range … Uses his size well to gain space in the lane while getting his body wide … Owns great hands that are quick and soft … Rotates well laterally on defense … Has a decent feel for the game that you can’t teach … Team player who has the locker room guy personality to get along with everyone … Has the work ethic that coaches love … Tough kid who will play through injuries while staying competitive.
Liabilities
Offensively has a tendency to rush post moves causing him to be out of control … Shows the ability to shoot from the perimeter but doesn’t have great consistency or confidence … Doesn’t always keep the ball high in the post, instead puts the ball on the floor to establish rhythm … Must keep it high to get his defender off balance as he lacks the height to shoot over… Weight control will play a role in where he goes in the draft as some will question his dedication to staying conditioned properly… Lacks the long arms to rebound out of position consistently … Offensively Davis can struggle to get his shot off against taller defenders who have decent shot blocking ability … Average shot blocking in college will be less of a factor in the NBA thanks to his semi-average leaping ability and medium wingspan … Not the tallest power forward, listed at 6-9 but appears to be anywhere from 6-7 to 6-8 … Back to basket skills are not fully developed, often prefers to catch the ball then turn to face the basket … Conditioning and stamina may always be a concern as he appears to struggle late in the season and wear down, possibly due to excess weight … Will the recent weight loss stay off after draft day?
