Butch was noted for his long what would now be 3-pointers, but the greatest shot he made during his sr yr of leading the nation in scoring was against the Miami Redskins where he drove toward the basket on the 6-9 center Dinkins at the north end of Anderson area and just as his shot was about to be blocked, Butch flipped the ball from his leading right hand under the basket to his left hand and up off the board and into the basket ---best shot I've ever seen of a 6'1" against a 6'9" .

Butch was a great BG star and deserves to have his number by Nate's in Anderson and later Stroh. His long shots were far beyond the three of today and his foul shooting was always a threat. I followed him (and Nate of course) across the radio dial if i could pick up their games. I had the chance to talk to Nate a few years ago in San Francisco at his Bar-B-Que and we re-lived the great Loyola game and others. The shame of comparing today with yesterday is that these guys toiled in the pros and were paid very little meaning they really had to scratch and save for the later years. So sorry to see Howie in such bad shape a few years ago when Anthony Stacy broke his scoring record. I knew he was in trouble then. I got a chance to visit with him when he coached the Lima Mixers. It was at a local nightspot and he was more than willing to take time to talk to a non-jock but I didn't want to bother him. Sympathy to his family and just know all of us falcons loved to watch him soar. He will be missed. BG---Hang that number NOW even if it is too late!!!!!
