2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Quick first step allows him to penetrate in the lane for lay-ups or the pull up jumper... Smooth point guard who makes things look effortless ... Loves to hit pull up jumpers off the dribble from mid-range if the defense is playing him for the drive ... Good spot up shooter who likes to hang around the top of the key or the side of the 3-point line for open looks ... Above average understanding of the game, seems to know where most of his teammates are on the court... Really looks to push the ball in the open court where he often will finish or pass to the trailer... Shows solid positional defense as he uses his lateral quickness to stay in front of his man ... Has lowered his turnovers every year thanks to improved ball protection ... Plays with a lot of heart and is rarely intimidated ... Has quick hands which makes him a threat to intercept poor passes thrown into passing lanes ... Makes solid decisions when the ball in his hands, a sign of his mental maturity ...Offensively he's assumed much more of the scoring load the past two years...

Weakness: Biggest detractor has to be Gardner's size he will undoubtedly be a post up target for NBA point guards ... Streaky shooter who tends to go through periods of inconsistency hitting the mid range and 3-point jumper... Has problems converting on deep penetration plays due to his lack of height... Doesn't really shoot the ball well in traffic something that will be a must for him in the NBA ... Although he shows above average point guard skills he still lacks many skills for a player at his position .... For a point guard he is not a very creative passer... Court vision remains slightly above average as he has yet to show the ability to make plays happen with his passing ... While athletic Gardner doesn't possess the explosiveness that many quality point guards in the NBA share ... While he has become a solid scorer he has developed more of a two guard mentality which is shoot first pass second ... Has yet to consistently control the tempo of a game ...
