nba The Draft Review - The Draft Review

Strengths: Athletically, Smith is a great package of explosiveness and strength … These natural gifts along with his body control allow him to convert difficult finishes around the basket even in heavy traffic … Very unselfish player almost to a fault, as he constantly looks to feed teammates … Possesses an almost guard-like court vision to quickly identify passing options … Perimeter shooting has shown some signs of improvement from the three point line and a good looking turnaround jumper … Aggressiveness when taking the ball to the basket earns him a lot of contact that results in free throws opportunities … Even more impressive, after creating the contact he has the ability to use his body strength to absorb and finish … Underrated rebounder who uses his strength and leaping ability to get a good amount of boards … Back to the basket moves enable him to take advantage of mismatches or weaker defenders … Team player and glue guy who does a lot of the little things that don’t show up in the box score … Uses his athleticism in transition to finish with flair … Defensively, Smith has improved greatly on the perimeter where his quick hands, lateral quickness, and long arms allow him to disrupt most players … Plays the game with toughness and intensity … Does a good job of playing the passing lanes for steals … Patient player who doesn’t force many things, simply allows the game to come to him … Owns a high basketball IQ and good feel for the game that you can't teach …

Weakness: While his ball handling is good enough to bring the ball up the court, he isn’t very advanced taking players off the dribble consistently … When faced with heavy pressure from perimeter defenders he will automatically pick up his dribble and pass to a teammate … Shows the ability to shoot from the perimeter, but is far from consistent … To his credit, he has improved shooting when his feet are set, but must still work on shooting off the dribble … Offensively, Smith isn’t as assertive as you would like to see, as he defers to other teammates … Despite all his talent, teams will grade his potential on the level of a junior – he’s a year older due to an additional year he spent at prep school … Isn’t a very reliable three point shooter … For such an accomplished athlete, he surprisingly he lacks the confidence to consistently take over games … Isn’t nearly as effective playing in a half court set due to streaky shooting … While Smith has the prototype body and athleticism to play small forward in the NBA his lack of precise shooting given his age is troubling to some …
