nba Andrew Ogilvy 2010 Underclassmen - The Draft Review

Strengths: Fundamentally sound player capable of making plays that few his age have yet to learn … Possesses a tremendous feel for the game … Decent runner of the court despite his below average foot speed … Excels in the high post where his vast array of skills enable him to take advantage of most defenders … Possesses good touch facing the basket where he can make shots 16 feet from mid-range with some consistency … If his defender is playing him close on the perimeter, he has the ball handling ability to drive past them for the lay-up … Owns a good assortment of moves with his back to the basket, from up and unders to a nice drop step … Uses his exceptional post footwork to execute moves with balance and speed … Possesses soft hands to catch most passes thrown into the post without error … Tremendous post passer with great court vision to recognize double teams and locate open teammates … Does a good job of getting his body wide when posting up … Although not a dominating rebounder, he shows promise rebounding in his area thanks to his ability to effective box out … Possesses a difficult hook shot to defend due to his ability to shoot with either hand … Despite all his finesse moves, Ogilvy really disrupts defenses, which often leads him to getting an excellent amount of free throw opportunities … To compound issues for opposing defenses, Ogilvy is an excellent free throw shooter … Coachable player who wants to improve and has a team first attitude …

Weaknesses: Stamina isn’t what you would like, as there are times when he is visibly winded … Although an adequate shot blocker on the college leve,l Ogilvy lacks the explosiveness to make an impact in the NBA … Lacks the quickness and leaping ability to rebound out of position … Defensively, his post defense must improve, as he is foul prone when defending athletic forwards or centers … Body strength could stand some improvement as he doesn’t always finish after absorbing contact in the paint … There will be some concerns as to what position he will play - at 6-10 he lacks the ideal height of most centers and lacks the explosives to defend the NBA’s athletic power forwards … Potentially, he will continue to improve, but not by leaps and bounds with his average athleticism … Movements are a bit on the mechanical side in that his agility is suspect, something that is uncommon for a player his size in the NBA … When defended by a player with length, Ogilvy struggles to finish in the post where his shot is susceptible to getting blocked or disrupted … Struggled a bit this year with confidence, which has affected his overall play at times … While he isn’t soft, Ogilvy struggles to match the physicality imposed by his defender and usually takes a period of adjustment to get himself together offensively …
