ante-tomic-1.jpg Ante Tomic - The Draft Review utah Ante Tomic - The Draft Review

Strengths: Tomic is a very agile player that has no problem running the floor despite his size … Back to the basket skills are highly refined and show great balance and finesse … Despite being out–muscled by most opposing defenders, Tomic understands how to use his excellent footwork and fakes to offset any aggressiveness of his defender … Tremendous ball handler for his size that enjoys facing his defender 10 feet from the basket and using his quickness for the baseline drive … Proficient passer with solid court vision to see the floor very well … Uses a great variety of post-up moves such as jump hooks, up and under, drop steps, baseline spins and various head and shoulder fakes … Possesses the ability to hit 16 foot jumpers off catch and shoot situations with regularity … Does a good job getting his body wide in the post … Owns good hands that allow him to catch passes despite being interrupted by physical defenders … Possesses a great understanding of where he is in relation to the basket despite getting pushed away from the blocks … Also possesses soft touch around the basket … Displays great maturity on the court and clearly understands what his role is on every possession … Upside is relatively solid as he is just learning what his body can do - he was a point guard until his mid-teens provided a huge growth spurt, which naturally moved him from the perimeter to the post …

Weaknesses: Must continue to add a great deal of bulk to his upper body … This often causes tremendous problems for Tomic being able to establish post position without getting pushed off … What potentially stands in the way are his narrow shoulders and unique body frame, which may severely limit any possibility of being able to bulk-up … Unlike some players who share his body type, Tomic doesn’t have a great deal of core strength, which prevents him from being able to finish above the rim or after contact occurs … Post defense is below average at this point, which is primarily due to his lack of strength and toughness … Tomic will often allow post players to set-up without trying to deny his man position … There are times when he doesn’t put forth the best focus or effort on the defensive end … Not the biggest fan of contact - while he doesn’t consistently shy away from contact, he also doesn’t attempt to initiate it either … Has a bad habit of putting the ball on the floor too much to establish rhythm … Isn’t what you would call an assertive player that looks to dominant as his talent suggests … Lacks the explosiveness to ever be a serious force blocking shots on the NBA level … Struggles to match the physicality of opposing players when rebounding the ball as Tomic is easily boxed-out despite having the height advantage ...
