phoenix The Draft Review - The Draft Review

Strengths: Above average athlete with good size and fundamentals at his position … Shows great body strength on drives and the body control to absorb contact and finish in the lane … Possesses a solid first step to gain initial separation from his defender … Quality rebounder who, when properly motivated, does a great job crashing the glass … Has three point range when his feet are set that he can make with some regularity … Talented shooter from mid-range with the consistency and the confidence to shoot anywhere 18 feet from the basket … Understands how to use screens to create shot opportunities … Moves well without the ball in hands, constantly looks to make cuts around the basket … Once there, his decent athleticism enables him to finish with a good amount of success … Shows good effort and footwork when defending on the perimeter … Intelligent player who has a good grasp of fundamentals and the resourcefulness to use it to his advantage … Troubles smaller guards as he is often able to effectively post them up thanks to his strength … Although not exceptional, Hairston has improved creating contact primarily by being more aggressive going to the basket … Underrated in terms of toughness, endured a great deal of pain last season and played through it … Plays within himself and rarely tries to exceed past his strengths … Great locker room guy who has an excellent reputation among teammates and coaches …

Weaknesses: Ball handling is not very good and could be described as shaky at best … This inability to dribble severely limits Hairston in creating scoring opportunities for himself … Opposing defenders often resort to laying close and not allowing him the open shot … Seems to have lost a little bit of his explosiveness with the addition of weight over the course of his career, but should be able to regain some of it through better conditioning as he made progress this season by losing weight … Tends to get out of control on drives to the basket … Although he has all around skills, doesn’t specialize in any one area with definite NBA skill … Not comfortable shooting off the dribble opposed to when his feet are set and doesn’t have a great deal of success when he tries … Tends to struggle defending quick players and doesn’t possess great instincts or anticipation skills … Potential wise, he has failed to live up to his McDonald’s All-American hype and is reaching the ceiling of his growth as a player … Doesn’t dominate like he should and his intensity level could stand an increase …
