Strengths: Throwback scorer who utilizes the mid-range jumper to its full advantage … Owns an NBA ready body capable of withstanding the rigors of physical play … Uses this body a great deal when going for rebounds, which enables him to get a good number of boards despite his size … Plays the game with toughness and intensity, something that will make him prized among coaches … Decent passer, who despite his scoring mindset, is unselfish … Has become proficient taking one or two dribbles and pulling-up from mid-range … Understands how to utilize screens for catch and shoot opportunities … Uses his strong upper body to absorb any contact on drives and finish … Conditioning is top-notch in that he never seems to tire regardless of how many minutes he has played … No matter how badly Laing has shot during the course of a game he never loses confidence in himself … Possesses a decent feel for the game and makes quality decisions with the ball in his hands … Although he doesn’t drive to the basket much, he uses a number of fakes and hesitations to get defenders off their feet … If he can’t get separation he’ll often wait till his defender jumps, then creates contact by shooting into them … Great free throw shooter … Leadership has blossomed this year, which speaks about his confidence and maturity … Upside is relatively good despite being a senior, primarily because many of his issues are able to be corrected to some degree …

Weaknesses: Doesn’t possess exceptional athleticism or explosiveness … His height is not the prototypical size for a shooting guard in the NBA … Perimeter defense remains a work in progress … Tends to reach a lot hoping for steals instead of playing defense with his feet … This aggressiveness often leads him to pick-up fouls … Displays slow mechanics that will limit his ability to get his shot off cleanly in the NBA … The main issue in his mechanics is that he brings the ball to his knee in a wind-up fashion, thus giving defenders time to recover … Three point shooting shows promise but lacks any real consistency at the moment … Must concentrate on refining his ball handling skills as he is below average creating off the dribble consistently … Could stand to improve his lateral quickness as he has some problems defending quick guards … Lacks the first step and ball handling to take opposing defenders off the dribble … Because of this he rarely gets opportunities to slash to the basket … Some of his development has been stalled by his team’s lack of personnel, as he played last year at the power forward position for a good portion of the season …
