Strengths: Excellent ball handler for his size who is capable of bringing the ball up court or running the fast break … Moves without the ball looking for quick picks or screens to set up for a shot … Feel for the game is very high, simply possesses an excellent basketball IQ that allows him to make good decisions during the course of game … Unselfish player who consistently looks to pass, especially during drive and dish opportunities … Has improved considerably shooting from mid-range, which has strengthened his confidence so much that it’s not uncommon for him to pull-up off the dribble … Understands how to run an offense and most importantly knows where everyone should be on the floor … Long arms allow him some degree of help defensively where he will use them to try and keep quicker players from driving past him … Versatile player who can play minutes at shooting guard or small forward … Possesses a strong upper body capable of absorbing contact … Has three point range on his jumper when his feet are set … Plays defense with good effort and energy … With his size he sees the court very well and is usually able to pass over his defender with ease …
Weaknesses: Athletically there will be many concerns if he will be quick enough to guard players on the NBA level … To his credit his perimeter shooting has improved but still streaky, especially when shooting three point shots … A natural lefty, Ponkrashov relies heavily on going left on drives - opposing teams will often dare him to go right … Isn’t able to drive in the lane and create contact due to his average first step … Needs to fight through picks better on defense and improve foot speed which is solid in Europe, but will be below standard in the NBA … When faced with a more athletic player, Ponkrashov often struggles to stay in front of them without using his hands … Although not a tweener by definition he is a ball player without a true position, one that lacks explosiveness to play point guard and without the mentality or long range shooting ability to play shooting guard … While he creates mismatches, he’s rarely able to exploit them because of his lack of ability to consistently get full separation from his defender … Confidence still waivers during games and he defers a great deal to teammates even if he would be the best option … Potentially, he is near the ceiling of his development and won’t improve by leaps and bounds, only small increments …
