nba DeMarcus Nelson - The Draft Review

Strengths: Possesses an NBA body that is blessed with excellent upper body strength... Has improved quite a bit on ball handling since last season... Very good athlete with great quickness and leaping ability... Has legit NBA three point range that he should be able to make with regularity... Owns a terrific 1st step that allows him to get to the basket... Once there his body control and upper body strength allow him to absorb contact and finish... Court awareness and intelligence have developed nicely since last season... Has a very good understanding how to move without the ball in his hands... An excellent perimeter defender that has many of the physical tools needed to be effective on the next level... With quick hands, sound lateral movement and long arms, Nelson is capable of disrupting opposing guards... Uses his anticipation skills to play passing lanes for steal opportunities... For his size, Nelson is a capable rebounder thanks to his athleticism and long arms... Has become a better decision maker when the ball is in his hands... Creates a good deal of contact due to his aggressive playing style... Mental toughness has been apparent throughout his career as he's continued to play through various injuries... High character person off the court and has been trouble free even as far back as high school...

Weaknesses: Nelson has been a little injury prone throughout his career at Duke, which could leave some to question his durability... Standing at 6-foot-3 he lacks the ideal height at the shooting guard position... Tends to over penetrate, which often forces him to pick up his dribble when the lane is congested... Despite being such a solid perimeter shooter he remains a poor free throw shooter... Hasn't lived up to the press clippings that were placed on him entering college, which makes one wonder if he peaked early... Could have some problems getting his shot off on the next level as Nelson possesses a slow release when shooting the ball... Isn't able to gain complete separation from his defender after his initial first step... Some NBA teams may view him as a combo-guard, but his passing ability and ball handling aren't as polished as one would like to see... Has problems getting involved offensively if his perimeter shooting is off... Sometimes tries to go for the spectacular play instead of settling for a simple, less difficult move... Nelson shows good shooting touch from mid-range, but doesn't utilize it nearly as much as he should - most of his shots are drives or three point shots... Not very adept at shooting off screens off the dribble...
