augusta_st Tyrekus Bowman - The Draft Review

Background: Bowman is the definition of a late bloomer who didn’t play organized basketball until his sophomore year of high school. As a freshman Bowman stood at 5-9, but grew to 6-3 over the summer while his athleticism continued to develop. Division I schools began to show interest in the explosive forward after his impressive senior year when he averaged 21 PPG, 12 RPG and 4 BPG for Washington-Wilkes high school. Georgia State and Radford began to recruit him but Dip Metress, the newly appointed coach at Augusta State, was already ahead of the game and offered Bowman a scholarship. Since joining Augusta State, Bowman, along with Coach Metress, have led the team to a 69% winning percentage during his 4 years at the school. Bowman battled back this past season after being sidelined with an atrial septal defect. This affected his heart and kept him out 22 days while recovering from a surgical procedure to correct the problem. Bowman recovered nicely and earned the Peach Belt conference Player of the Year for the second straight year.

Strengths: Athletically, Bowman is near elite level with very few peers nationally … Creative slasher whose body control and leaping ability allow him to finish on difficult drives despite traffic with relative ease … Has improved taking one or two dribbles to create space for the pull-up jumper 18 feet from the basket … Unselfish player who consistently looks for open teammates before shooting the ball … Possesses an impressive array of back to the basket moves such as a turnaround jumper and an up and under move when posting up smaller defenders … Defensively, Bowman shows good lateral quickness, effort and fast hands … Has worked hard to incorporate a three point shot into his arsenal with some success … Excellent finisher in transition where his athleticism allows for impressive dunks … Owns a decently quick first step to get separation from his defender … Patient player who lets the game come to him instead of forcing shots … Acrobatic moves enable him to finish after contact occurs … This ability to create contact gets Bowman to the line a decent amount of times during the course of a game … An explosive scorer at times capable of creating points in a hurry … From a potential standpoint there is a lot left in the tank that Bowman can improve upon …

Weaknesses: Must continue to develop defensively on the perimeter as he is still learning skills like anticipation and defensive footwork … It hasn’t helped that he has had to play out of position at the power forward spot during the past 4 years … Perimeter shooting remains very inconsistent … Will be looked at as a tweener to some degree as he plays more like a small forward than a shooting guard … Although greatly improved, he remains underdeveloped creating off the dribble consistently … Should work to improve his average ball handling ability … Not all that great moving without the ball - tends to get caught standing around … Has three point range but remains very streaky when shooting it … Offensively, Bowman needs to become more aggressive at attacking the basket instead of falling in love with his jump shot and just shooting the perimeter … Could stand to add more weight and strength to his physique … Although not what you could classify as soft, physical play can disrupt his game to a degree … Prone to mental breakdowns during crucial moments of games … Confidence level seems to sway if he isn’t hitting his shots … Doesn’t have the shooting ability to utilize screens for quick shots … Like every Division II player, the level of competition is questionable, but to his credit he has played solid against Division I schools in preseason match-ups … Picks up fouls due to over aggressiveness when using his hands to reach for the ball instead of moving his feet …
