Any film on him? I'm from Pensacola and my friends always talked about him.

I saw Sam McCann‘s play in Quincy and the regional tournament against Quincy Shanks. He scored 59 points and at one point was being guarded by 6 foot six Bernard Powell who press him into the corner and where Sam took a looping shot over the top of the backboard from the far corner and strip the nets. The most beautiful shot I have ever seen alive.

I grew up in the Florida Panhandle in Chattahoochee, which was a basketball power in the late 60’s and early 70’s under Coach Corbin Scott. I attended many wonderful games as a youth. I heard about Sam McCants in the newspaper and went to see him play in the Regionals against Quincy Shanks in Quincy. He scored 59 points and was simply a magician with the basketball. I never saw anything like it. During the game he was being guarded by Bernard Powell a 6’6’ defensive powerhouse. Sam took the ball to the extreme left corner of the court with Powell hanging all over him. Sam was left handed and he turned, falling off the court and flung a shot which traversed over the top of the backboard and stripped the nets. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Thanks for the memories Sam

I remember on day we were at a local recreation center (Costs recreation center) and a lot of the local basketball talents were there. And several players from Booker T. Washington high school were heckling Sam Mccants About how they were going to hold him down from scoring. Sam laughed and said I tell you guys what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna hit my jersey number (43). Then I'm gonna stop shooting. Well game night he kept his word. He had 43 points midway the third quarter. He began to put on a show passing. During the first quarter he would run past our bench and call a players name and shoot just beyond half court. He call every player on the bench. Then he called the coaches names as well. One word to describe Sam mccants. Unstoppable.

I saw Sam mccants play at least 70 games in three years of high school. I missed the regional playoff game with Quincy shanks Tallahassee however I listened to the game on radio. 60 year old commentated Don Priest, after watching Sam score 59 points and winning the game with a long shot (3 pointer today) said " these tired eyes have seen a lot of basketball players in my years of broadcasting, but I've never seen a player as good as Sam McCants. I would also like to point out that my ex wife's cousin Damon Bailey (Mr. Basketball Indiana) could not compare to Sam as a basketball player.

He and his whole wiped out much larger schools. They beat our 4A School and made us like it!

I went to Pensacola Catholic High School with Sam McCants. He was by far, the best basketball shooter/scorer I've ever seen. His shot was unstoppable. If three-point shots were in play during his high school time, his game score might have averaged 70. His shot was almost always at what is now 3-point range. I was one year ahead of Sam. He would laugh at the player that would try to stop his shot. I knew him well. Louis Davis - Class of 1970

Sam McCants was the best high school basketball player I ever saw. He scored 54 points in the state championship game against Martin County Stuart. A beautiful fall-way left handed jump shot that was deadly. Held the state record in Fla for most points scored (3,333) that held up for may years.
