nba Renardo Sidney 2012 Underclassmen - The Draft Review

Background: Before he was even an 8th grader, coaches across America penciled in Sidney as the best in his class. He was so hyped that his middle school charged admission to his games, and before his freshman year, Sidney was not only considered the best player nationally, but showed up on numerous high school/prep pre-season All-American lists developed by well known recruiting gurus.

Sidney tried to enroll at the Piney Woods School, but the State of Mississippi declared him ineligible, as he was more 20 miles from the school’s campus. His family decided to have him sit out the year, while participating in AAU basketball. Then, during the summer before his sophomore year, the Sidney family left the State of Mississippi for California. As a sophomore he played for Artesia, but after the year was up he transferred to Fairfax where Renardo remained for the rest of his high school career.

The top 10 blue chip recruit averaged 26.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game while earning All-State and McDonald’s All-American selections. But after declaring for USC, just like in his high school career, Sidney once again became a circus of issues. Fresh from the OJ Mayo saga, the program viewed the Sidney family as an NCAA investigation waiting to happen. Both sides mutually parted way, but his second choice, UCLA, immediately pulled the scholarship.

Unlike with Jeremy Tyler and Brandon Jennings, longtime advisor Sonny Vaccaro determined that overseas play was not an option for Sidney. Instead, he returned to his home state and signed a letter of intent with Mississippi State. In true spirit, the theatrics that corresponded between the NCAA and Sidney’s family lawyer, Don Jackson, were rough in the press. At the end of the NCAA investigation, Sidney was forced to sit out his entire freshman year and repay $11,800 in improper benefits. For a player once rated on par with DeMarcus Cousins (Sacramento Kings), Sidney has a ton of time to make up and change his perceptions.
