2003 Scouting Report:
Strengths: Pure long ranger shooter who can the three point shot with regularity ... Despite not being super quick Carroll does a remarkable job of moving without the ball to get open ... Snooting mechanics are picture perfect... Plays calm and under control, rarely does an opposing team's defender get him rattled ... Possesses solid court vision as he does a great job of seeing the floor... Although not extremely athletic, Carroll is able to make some difficult shots in the lane on runners and glass shots ... Tough minded kid who doesn't back down from a challenge ... Fully blossomed into Notre Dame's team leader this past season ... Defensively he always works hard to stay in front of his man ... Really works well in a half court set ...Smart player who makes good court decisions ... Unlike many young players, Carroll is a wonderful mid-range shooter... Great rebounder despite playing the majority of his time out on the perimeter... Solid free throw shooter...
Weakness: Not a great athlete by any means as he possesses average speed and leaping ability ... Can settle for the jumper instead of driving to the basket to create contact... Seems to really struggle when on defense when having to guard athletic players ... This is mainly due to his average lateral quickness ... Doesn't have enough explosiveness to take opposing defenders off the first step ... Not a great creator off the dribble where his lack of ball handling ability can make it very difficult to create separation ... Lacks the required body control and balance to shoot consistently off the dribble ... Can over rely on spotting up for the 3-point shot... Doesn't have a whole lot of room for growth ...
