Background: Early in his high school career, Flowers often teamed with former McDonald’s All American Byron Eaton (Oklahoma State), whom he played with in high school and AAU. While lacking the press of his acclaimed teammate, Flowers really began to show himself to recruiters at the end of his junior year with his play at the AAU event, the Kingwood Classic. By the end of the summer, Kansas State, Southern Methodist, Oklahoma and Texas A&M all showed interest in obtaining Flowers services.

The top 100 recruit finished his senior season at Dallas Lincoln averaging 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. After the season was over Flowers gave a verbal commitment to Texas A&M, but grades prevented him from gaining admission. Flowers then headed to Genesis One Prep to improve his academic standing. After seeing his high school teammate, Eaton, enjoy college life at Oklahoma State, Flowers reopened his recruitment and committed to Oklahoma State after a visit with the school, but his time there didn’t last long, as he was ticketed during the summer for speeding and did not have a valid driver’s license or proof of insurance. He was also arrested for possession of marijuana, which ultimately led to his suspension from the team.

Flowers then transferred to Chipola junior college in Florida and soon blossomed into one of the nation’s top-10 JUCO prospect. Despite offers from South Florida, Seton Hall and Kansas State, Flowers decided to follow his head coach, Greg Heiar, to Southern Mississippi. His first year in Division I basketball was one of impact, as he led the Golden Eagles in points and rebounds while earning second team All-Conference USA honors.
