mike-sweetney Mike Sweetney - The Draft Review new-york Mike Sweetney - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Really works hard to establish good position on the blocks ... Has extremely soft hands to catch most passes thrown into the post without bobbling them ... Possesses excellent post footwork to maneuver around the basket... Super back to the basket player with highly advanced low post moves ... Such as the up and under, jump hook, spin move and the slightly used turnaround jumper ... Mobility and footwork make it extremely hard for the defense to get a read on what move to expect ... Shows soft touch around the basket as he converts on a high number of lay-in's and tip-in's ... Does a great job of keeping the ball up high after receiving it ... Has developed his defensive timing which is why he has become more of a shot blocking force this past season ... Above average lateral movement for a player with his size ...Physical low post game can really draw fouls from the opposing defense ... Body strength gives him the ability to finish after contact occurs ... Great post passer who recognizes cutters and spot up shooters ... Excellent rebounder who understands how to use his body and long arms to gain rebounds out of position ... Shows a great work ethic seen in his continual weight loss of the past two seasons ... Above average runner of the court although he is no speedster ...

Weakness: Sweetney will need to expand his shooting range out to 16 feet from the basket... Doesn't seem comfortable facing the basket as he does with his back to it ... Height could turn out to be a slight issue at 6-8, Sweetney will be somewhat undersized in the NBA ... Will have to work on getting himself in better shape by toning up his body and improving his overall stamina ... Double teams can frustrate him into shooting Ill-advised shots ... Not what one would call an impressive athlete because of his lack of explosiveness ... Ball handling from the perimeter remains underused as he doesn't take many defenders off the dribble ... Will need to brush up on his post defense as he can be a little foul prone ... Although he has developed into a shot blocking presence his height and leaping ability could limit him from doing this to an extent in the NBA ...
