rick-rickert The Draft Review - Rick Rickert minnesota The Draft Review - Rick Rickert

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Rickert's height allows few defenders to disrupt his shot release ... Has a wide assortment of low post moves from a drop step to an up and under... Has really improved with shooting the hook shot with either hand ... When his feet are set he displays above average 3-point range on his jumper... Shows superb post footwork and agility to maneuver around the basket... Can make the mid range jumper from 18 feet out... When opponents come out to pressure his shot he likes to take them baseline off the dribble ... Shows that innate feel for the game many young players lack ... Versatile offensive player who can take his defender inside or out to create mismatches ... For his size he is a solid runner of the court ... Shows the makings of being an above average passer for someone at his position ... Great finisher around the basket where he is capable of making some impressive lay-up's ... Doesn't shy away from the ball in clutch situations ... When his jumper starts to fall consistently he can take over a game ... Possess soft touch around the basket to convert close shot accurately...

Weakness: Perimeter defense remains suspect due to his average foot speed ... Could stand to add 20-25 pounds of weight to strengthen his upper body ... This lack of upper body strength really causes problems for Rickert when it comes to establishing position on the low blocks ... Has yet to consistently display dominance as he seems to lack that killer instinct ... Can be foul prone when having to guard physical low post players ... Lack of aggressiveness and average upper body strength tend to limit his production when rebounding ... While he has a nice assortment of low post moves, he doesn't always play fully comfortable when his back is to the basket... But this could be a another strength issue ... If he is to play small forward Rickert will need to become more efficient when it comes to taking his man off the dribble ... At this point in his career Rickert is kind of a tweener not strong enough to play power forward ... Lacks the quickness and foot speed to defend small forwards ... Ball handling and better protection will be a must to improve upon if he is to play the small forward position in the NBA ... Can at times settle for the outside shot instead of driving in the lane to draw fouls ...
