MINNEAPOLIS -- A man who pleaded guilty in the beating death of former Villanova basketball star Howard Porter last year was sentenced Monday to life in prison without parole.

Rashad Raleigh was sentenced as part of a plea agreement. The 29-year-old man pleaded guilty last month to first-degree murder in a deal that let him avoid prosecution for a triple murder. At the time, he described Porter's death as a robbery gone bad.

Porter led Villanova to the 1971 NCAA championship game. He went on to play seven pro seasons, but his career was cut short by injuries and cocaine addiction. He came to Minnesota for treatment and was working as a probation officer when killed in May 2007.

Another defendant pleaded guilty earlier to aiding and abetting aggravated robbery for luring Porter to her St. Paul home, where he was beaten. A third defendant, Fredquinzo King, still faces a first-degree murder charge.
