othello-hunter-1.jpg 2008 Rosters - The Draft Review
  • Name: Othello Hunter
  • Position: Power Forward
  • Height: 6-8 (2.03m)
  • Weight: 225 (102kg)
  • College Team: Ohio State Buckeyeys
  • Nationality: American
  • Birthplace: Winston-Salem, North Carolina
  • Birthdate: 5/28/1986
  • Drafted: Automatically eligible for the 2008 NBA Draft but was not drafted by an NBA franchise.
ohio_st 2008 Rosters - The Draft Review

Strengths:
Hunter is a great athlete with quickness and leaping ability … Thanks to his length, he could add a good amount of weight to his body without sacrificing athleticism … Despite his average size as a power forward, his long arms allow him to play bigger than he is … Understands the value of keeping the ball high in the paint … This really helps him on put-backs, as defenders don’t get much recovery time to defend … From a mobility standpoint, Hunter runs the floor extremely well … Defensively, he provides a solid shot blocking presence with his wingspan and quickness … A great help defender, as his lateral movement enables him to rotate over … Active guy who plays the game with great energy … Understands what his strengths are on the court and rarely exceeds them … Has shown the ability to hit the 16 foot jumper from mid-range in spot up opportunities … Solid out of position rebounder thanks to his length and athleticism … Owns a good pair of strong hands capable of holding rebounds without getting them stripped by opposing defenders … A good finisher around the basket where his leaping ability allows him to finish with some flair … Hustler who has no problem doing the dirty work … It's been reported that Hunter has only played organized ball since his senior year of high school, so he has plenty of room for growth and doesn’t have a lot of bad habits that could hold him back …

Weaknesses: Offensively, he still has a ways to go before his back to the basket skills are fully developed … Doesn’t have soft touch around the basket, nor does he have the softest hands - it’s not uncommon for him to bobble passes from time to time … Lack of body strength prevents him from being able to establish position consistently without getting pushed off … Because of this, Hunter tends to get lost where he is in relation to the basket, which often results in him overshooting the ball … Poor free throw shooter … Not the best rebounder in position as he is prone to getting boxed out, but to his credit he is improving … Feel for the game is questionable, although he began show quality signs of improvement during the course of the season … While not a terrible post passer his court vision limits him from being able to see the floor well … Post footwork is choppy and remains a work in progress as he lacks balance at times when executing his moves … Lack of upper body strength prevents him from finishing after contact occurs … To compound matters, Hunter’s lack of aggressiveness prevents him from creating fouls on opposing defenders … When defending in the post he struggles to match the physicality of opposing defenders … Some of this will clearly be alleviated with more game experience … Timing when blocking shots is off as he is prone to biting on fakes … Will be a project for the team that drafts him …

  • Nationality: American
  • Birthplace: Poughkeepsie, New York
  • Birthdate: 4/21/1986
  • Drafted: Automatically eligible for the 2008 NBA Draft but was not selected by an NBA franchise ...
rhode_island 2008 Rosters - The Draft Review

Strengths: Possesses an NBA body that can handle the physical rigors of an NBA schedule … Has 3-point range on his jumper … Strong upper body enables him to absorb contact and finish with success … Quality ball handler who is able to take some defenders to the basket … Understands how to use the glass in traffic to convert difficult shots … Decent shooter when his feet are set or in catch and shoot situations 16 feet from the basket … Uses a number of hesitation moves to get defenders off their feet where he will then lean in on them when he shoots to create contact … Plays the game with toughness and a warrior’s attitude to do whatever it takes to win the game … Defensively, Daniels likes to use his strength and aggressiveness to disrupt opposing players … Potentially, he still has a relatively good upside despite being a senior … Great rebounder who relies on his strength, long arms and determination to gather a good number of boards … Owns a solid post up game that often allows him to take small forwards down in the paint … Creates mismatches during games, as most small forwards are unable to guard him in post up situations and most power forwards are too slow to defend him … Gym rat with a tremendous work ethic who entered Rhode Island as a power forward, but through hard work will leave as a small forward …

Weaknesses: While he shows the ability to shoot from the perimeter he remains a very streaky shooter … Doesn’t really move well without the ball – Daniels will often post up players instead of running around picks or cutting to the basket … Lacks the explosive first step needed to create separation from his defender … Basketball IQ is suspect as there are moments when you wonder what he was thinking, but to his credit he doesn’t have mental breakdowns … Daniels is somewhat predictable offensively because he isn’t very smooth shooting off the dribble on pull-up situations, so most defenders play him for the drive … Some of this has to deal with his shooting mechanics - while he puts the ball behind his head, his release is of more concern as it’s never consistent and at times choppy, also fails to properly square up his body … Athletically, he is not a great leaper nor very quick … Defensively, this really restricts him from being able to guard explosive players as his lateral quickness is below average … Listed at 6-8, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if he measured out at 6-6 ½ to 6-7 … Hasn’t been as aggressive attacking the basket this year and creating contact due to the fact that he has settled for perimeter shots … Does a lot of things well, but isn’t exceptional at any one skill …

  • College Team: Oklahoma State Cowboys
  • Nationality: American
  • Birthplace: Bellflower, California
  • Birthdate: 6/17/1985
  • Drafted: Automatically eligible for the 2008 NBA Draft but was not selected by an NBA franchise ... Drafted by the Dakota Wizards in the 2009 NBDL Draft...
oklahoma_st 2008 Rosters - The Draft Review

Strengths: Defensively, Dove has many of the physical tools needed to develop into a competent defender on the next level, such as length, lateral quickness, long arms, swift hands and versatility to defend multiple positions … A solid finisher in traffic thanks to his body control and floaters to convert … Owns a solid first step to gain separation from his defender … Uses his long arms and foot speed to play passing lanes for steals … Possesses the typical NBA ready body and size that teams covet at the small forward position … Potentially, he has a good amount of growth left to work with … Athletically, he is a quality athlete blessed with good quickness and explosiveness … With his athleticism and mobility, Dove is a decent rebounder out of position … Quality finisher in transition who has the body strength to convert after absorbing contact … Possesses a decent basketball IQ to see plays as they develop and stop them on defense … Great attitude in that Dove takes pride in his defense and is never intimidated or frustrated when defending his assignment …

Weaknesses: Although he shows decent shooting touch from the perimeter he lacks any real consistency … Some of this is due to his shooting mechanics which are in need of refinement - he has a slow release due to a wind up motion … Still learning how to shoot off the dribble from mid-range - every shot is either a drive to the basket or a three point shot when his feet are set … Semi tweener who doesn’t really define a true position in the NBA with his skill set … Although he’s clearly better suited for the small forward position he lacks the offensive ability to contribute from the perimeter consistently … Lacks any real confidence in scoring - seems content to defer to teammates and get his points on hustle plays …While he usually has the size on his match-up, his ability to take advantage of this by posting up is often fruitless … Average rebounder who should get more with his athletic ability, but lacks instincts and gets boxed out rather easy … Defensively, Dove tends to get too aggressive and gets into foul trouble a decent amount of time … Settles too often for perimeter shots, neglecting to drive to the basket and create contact … Some of this could be due to his average ball handling, which to his credit has improved this season, but remains a skill in need of improvement … Not much of a passer due sub par court vision …

  • Drafted: Automatically eligible for the 2008 NBA Draft but was not drafted by an NBA franchise.
tennessee 2008 Rosters - The Draft Review

Strengths: Owns legit NBA three point range on his jumper … Excellent shooting mechanics give him a quick release that allows him to convert difficult shots, despite pressure, by gaining just a little daylight to get off … Crafty player who uses creative shots such as runners and floaters to compensate for his athletic shortcomings … Not surprising, Lofton possesses a great feel for the game and is as fundamentally sound as you can find on the college level … Has improved this year on taking a couple dribbles to get into the lane … Possesses a nice step back jumper to get separation 18 feet from the basket … Tremendous free throw shooter … A tough player who will play through pain and injuries … Defensively, Lofton shows good effort, decently quick hands and above average anticipation skills … Doesn’t back down from a challenge and is simply a clutch player who wants the ball in his hands … Gym rat that spends countless hours working on his skills … Quality upper body strength enables him absorb contact well … A talented shooter off catch and shoot opportunities where he can make unbalanced shots with regularity … Possesses a scoring mindset that gives him great confidence in putting the ball in the basket no matter how bad he is shooting - he never looses faith in his ability to score … Maturity level will endear him to NBA teams in search of locker room guys …

Weaknesses: At 6-2, Lofton is undersized at the shooting guard position … To further compound issues he isn’t a great creator off the dribble, as his first step is average at best … This inability to create separation usually makes Lofton settle for shots instead of driving to the basket …. Athletically, he lacks explosiveness and is viewed by many as an average athlete … This impacts him on the defensive end as his lateral quickness is suspect, not to mention his height, which will make him a post-up target … Shooting has gone through periods of inconsistency this year … It remains highly questionable if he will ever be able to play the point guard position … Lacks even the basic of skills, as his court vision, ability to run an offense, and experience to make the transition, even in spot minutes, at point guard questionable … Ball handling ability has improved this season but is still a work in progress … Not a great finisher in transition or in traffic where athleticism becomes a needed resource … Lofton has got so much out of his limited assets that it is highly unlikely there is much he can improve on … Doesn’t provide much when it comes to rebounding the ball … Isn’t able to really capitalize on his excellent free throw shooting as he doesn’t draw many fouls from opposing defenders …

  • College Team: St. Joseph's Hawks
  • Nationality: American
  • Birthplace: Casselberry, Florida

st_josephs 2008 Rosters - The Draft Review

Strengths:
Possesses legit three point range on his jumper that he can make with regularity … Moves well without the ball in his hands … Excellent free throw shooter … Quality mid-range shooter from 18 feet from the basket … Quick release enables him to make shots with little time needed … Really understands how to utilize jab steps and hesitation moves to get defenders off their feet … Excellent passer whose court vision and unselfishness enables him to create scoring opportunities for teammates … Does not back down as he plays with a chip on his shoulder and is highly competitive … Extremely confident shooter who wants the ball in his hands in crucial moments … Excellent finisher in transition who understands how to use his length to his advantage … Not an explosive athlete, but is a better than given credit for … Versatile player whose skills and unique height give him the opportunity to play the small forward and shooting guard positions, and creates mismatches frequently because of this … Solid ball handler … Great basketball IQ allows Calathes to make smart, sound decisions on the court … Quality rebounder despite his perimeter preference … Savvy player who understands all the nuances of the game … Unlike last season, Calathes has become much more consistent with his play … Despite being a shooter, he has learned how to develop free throw opportunities by drawing contact from his defender …

Weaknesses: Physically, Calathes remains underdeveloped with below average upper body strength … Body type unfortunately suggests that added weight could hinder him athletically … While his height and ability to play on the perimeter allow for smaller mismatches, Calathes' skill set isn’t very polished when in comes to post-up or back to the basket situations … This often prevents him from being able to effectively finish after contact occurs … Average 1st step prevents him from being able to consistently take opposing defenders off the dribble … Perimeter defense is decent but will require upgrading, as Calathes doesn’t have the lateral quickness needed to guard explosive match-ups … Has a tendency to let his emotions get the best of him during games … Is too satisfied with settling for perimeter shots instead of driving to the basket … Defensively, he can be a bit too aggressive when going for steals, which can lead to quick fouls … He is close to the ceiling of his potential …

seton_hall 2008 Rosters - The Draft Review

Strengths: Throwback scorer who utilizes the mid-range jumper to its full advantage … Owns an NBA ready body capable of withstanding the rigors of physical play … Uses this body a great deal when going for rebounds, which enables him to get a good number of boards despite his size … Plays the game with toughness and intensity, something that will make him prized among coaches … Decent passer, who despite his scoring mindset, is unselfish … Has become proficient taking one or two dribbles and pulling-up from mid-range … Understands how to utilize screens for catch and shoot opportunities … Uses his strong upper body to absorb any contact on drives and finish … Conditioning is top-notch in that he never seems to tire regardless of how many minutes he has played … No matter how badly Laing has shot during the course of a game he never loses confidence in himself … Possesses a decent feel for the game and makes quality decisions with the ball in his hands … Although he doesn’t drive to the basket much, he uses a number of fakes and hesitations to get defenders off their feet … If he can’t get separation he’ll often wait till his defender jumps, then creates contact by shooting into them … Great free throw shooter … Leadership has blossomed this year, which speaks about his confidence and maturity … Upside is relatively good despite being a senior, primarily because many of his issues are able to be corrected to some degree …

Weaknesses: Doesn’t possess exceptional athleticism or explosiveness … His height is not the prototypical size for a shooting guard in the NBA … Perimeter defense remains a work in progress … Tends to reach a lot hoping for steals instead of playing defense with his feet … This aggressiveness often leads him to pick-up fouls … Displays slow mechanics that will limit his ability to get his shot off cleanly in the NBA … The main issue in his mechanics is that he brings the ball to his knee in a wind-up fashion, thus giving defenders time to recover … Three point shooting shows promise but lacks any real consistency at the moment … Must concentrate on refining his ball handling skills as he is below average creating off the dribble consistently … Could stand to improve his lateral quickness as he has some problems defending quick guards … Lacks the first step and ball handling to take opposing defenders off the dribble … Because of this he rarely gets opportunities to slash to the basket … Some of his development has been stalled by his team’s lack of personnel, as he played last year at the power forward position for a good portion of the season …
