2011 NBA Draft

kenneth-faried 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review denver 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

Background: When you look up the definition of sleeper, Faried’s name should pop-up. Despite earning the honor as top rebounder at the prestigious Five-Star Basketball Camp, quintessential late bloomer, Faried, didn’t have the publicity or huge stats early on in his high school career. This rugged forward had Division I skill in rebounding, but few thought his 6-foot-6 frame and intense playing style were suitable. To compound the issues, Faried’s grades were an issue as Fairleigh Dickinson, Morehead State and Marist wondered if he could get the necessary NCAA scores.

At Newark’s Technology High School, Faried averaged 23.2 points, 15.8 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game. His play helped advance his school to the sectional semifinals, while earning first team all-state honors in New Jersey. Despite this, as a mid major prospect and 2-star white chip recruit, Faried was barely ranked in the top 800 of high school seniors. He chose Morehead after obtaining an acceptable SAT score by NCAA standards. Since entering Morehead State, Faried lead the school to a NCAA berth, ending their 25-year drought. He withdrew from the 2010 NBA draft, citing the need improve on his offensive skills and graduate. Regardless how well Faried improves on his offense, the intrigue and main interest of NBA teams is his rebounding. He finished the past two seasons among the top 2 leaders in rebounding throughout all of Division I basketball.

jeremy-tyler 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review charlotte 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

Background: Tyler’s name has become synonymous with what the NBA and NCAA fear the most, quickly pointing to as a warning to future players who think of taking his path. Tyler was one of the best players in the nation, quickly asserting himself as a player who could have the most potential regardless of class. As a junior, Tyler committed to Louisville, despite several other scholarship offers from local schools like USC and UCLA. At San Diego High School Tyler averaged 28.7 points, 12 rebounds, and 9 blocks per game, but unlike many top recruits, his team had poor success due in large part to the firing of his coach, Kenny Roy, for attempting to illegally recruit 3 players to join Tyler at San Diego.

The frustration was evident on Tyler, who just had just a year before won a state title, to now, as a member of an average team. Unlike most high school players that transfer when this happens, Tyler, along with his father James, approached Sonny Vaccaro to guide him through the process of playing basketball overseas. Vaccaro a year earlier helped Brandon Jennings go overseas. The difference was, Jennings had graduated high school, but didn’t have the necessary scores to attend Arizona. Tyler not only wanted to play ball overseas, but decided to bypass his senior year of high school.

With the help of Vaccaro, Tyler received a $140,000 contract with Maccabi Haifa in Israel’s top professional basketball league. To say that the transition from prep to overseas pros has been hard on Tyler is an understatement. Tyler has struggled to grasp everything from the culture to simpler things, like professionalism. Finally in March, Tyler quit and returned home with five weeks remaining before the end of Israel season. In only 10 games he averaged a mere 2.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.3 blocks per game with only 7.6 minutes per game.

In July 2010, Tyler signed a contract to play ball for Tokyo Apache of Japan’s professional basketball league. Many close to the prospect cite Tyler’s interest in playing for Tokyo Apache has much to do with the team’s head coach, Bob Hill, who has nine years of NBA head coaching experience. This will be a make or break year for Jeremy, who was viewed as seriously immature last season and now he must prove he isn’t a bust at the ripe age of 19-years old.

derrick-williams 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review minnesota 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

Background: Unlike many of his prep counterparts on the California high school basketball landscape, Williams didn’t play for any of the powerhouses (Dominguez, Mater Dei or Fairfax) with their big profiles and ESPN coverage that boasts a host of prospects year after year that keep recruiters and college coaches coming back for more.

With Williams off the national radar he steadily raised his profile in the Pangos summer camp. Perhaps this is where former USC head coach, Tim Floyd, became intrigued with the combo forward. A few months later, at the beginning of his senior year, Williams committed to USC, citing his relationship with Floyd and close location.

Less than a month later Floyd was fired for the O.J. Mayo fiasco, so with his future coach gone and with NCAA sanctions quick to be handed down, Williams reopened his recruitment. Three schools, Arizona, Arizona State and Memphis, jumped to the forefront as Williams’ profile grew by his play during his senior year. He is no longer viewed as a two star player struggling to be a top 200 player, as certain recruiting lists had him. Williams was usually found among the top 125 players in the nation. He finished his senior year averaging 25 points, 12 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game while leading his school to the quarterfinals of the CIF southern section playoffs. New Arizona Head coach, Sean Miller, made a big push to secure Williams commitment and, lucky for the rising coach, Williams enjoyed his visit and was enthralled by the history of the program. In the end Arizona beat out Memphis, the other finalist.

Williams’ freshman year at Arizona justified Coach Sean Miller’s persistence in recruiting the talented forward, as Williams led the team in points and rebounds, along with winning the Pac-10 conference Freshman of the Year honors. He was also selected to the All-Pac-10 first team.

trey-thompkins 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review clippers 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

Background: Despite Thompkin’s pedigree, he was never forced to play the game. His father, 6-foot-7 Howard, was a 9th round pick in the 1981 NBA draft out of Wagner, and his mother, 6-foot-2 Marsha, was a forward at New York Tech. Thompkins naturally developed a love for the game while watching his father play pick-up games and sprouted onto the national recruiting scene early on in his high school career. At the beginning of his junior season, Thompkins had high major programs Georgia, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina calling for his services.

Many pegged Florida as the team to beat and thought it only be a matter of time before the then defending champs would land Thompkins, but his time at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia gave him a new perspective on the distance factor in being away from home. This led him to transfer back to Wesleyan High school where he played his freshmen and sophomore seasons. The location of Georgia University gave Thompkins what he wanted most to be close to home. His senior year at Wesleyan proved successful as he took them to the Georgia state title while averaging 27.5 points and 14.7 rebounds per game.

The Blue chip, top 25 player was viewed as Georgia's most important recruits since Jumaine Jones entered the program 10 years ago. As a college freshman Thompkins became Georgia’s leading rebounder and finished second in scoring while earning a place on the SEC All-Freshman team. Thompkins followed that up with a banner sophomore year, yet despite this success, he surprised many with his declaration to stay in school. NBA draft observers had him pegged for the 2010 NBA draft, but Thompkins simply felt his skills weren’t ready. Few doubt he will be a 4-year player, so those Bulldog fans in Athens better enjoy this season. There’s good chance it will be his last.

enes-kanter1 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review utah2010 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

Background: Enes Kanter - Kanter is widely considered one of the most dominant international players to ever come to the US to play collegiate basketball. International players of his caliber typically play professionally in their respected countries until they declare for the NBA draft. While in Europe, Kanter quickly cemented himself the best international post player with his exceptional play on Turkey’s Under -18 national teams.

At Fenerbahce Ulker, Turkey’s top professional league, Kanter played in only a handful of games, averaging 2.7 points 4.2 rebounds. But these numbers hardly illustrated the 17-year-old’s true value on the court. Kanter averaged 18.6 points, 16.4 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game while leading the Turkey U-18 national team to a third place showing at the 2009 European U18 Championship. The interest in Kanter was substantial, but didn’t reach huge proportions until this performance.

He shrugged off various pro offers in Europe because of his desire to play in American high school and college basketball, yet despite his celebrity, Kanter experienced difficulties in his search to find a home in America. Prep schools Findlay Prep and Mountain State both abandoned their hopes for Kanter after rumors of a questionable amateur status. Rivals schools were said to refuse play if Kanter was on the team, yet Stoneridge Prep in California took Kanter, who quickly committed to Washington University despite it being so early in his recruitment.

Perhaps this early announcement of his college choice was why he quickly reopened his recruitment, many point fingers at Kentucky creeping in to attempt to secure Kanter. At the end of his senior season at Stonebridge Prep (one of the best prep schools in the country), he averaged around 35 points and 20 rebounds per game.

In March, Kanter citied that Kentucky head coach John Calipari’s ability to put players in the NBA was the primary reason for his commitment to the program. The Kentucky fan base was even more excited as Kanter dominated the 2010 Nike Hoop Summit, putting up 34 points and 13 rebounds in the prestigious all-star game.

But the excitement quickly dissipated as the General Manager of Fenerbahce Ulker Nedim Karakas provided the NCAA with banking and housing records showing all the benefits paid to Kanter, such as food, pocket money and a salary during his last three months on the team. These allegations are said to total more than $100,000 in cash and benefits over three years. Many have claimed that this is nothing more than a former team trying to get back at a player. In the meantime, the NCAA in the meantime is investigating Kanter’s amateur status.

keith-benson 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review atlanta07 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

Background: Coming out of Detroit Country Day, Benson was considered a white chip athlete. These one and two star recruits are typically destined to be a walk-ons or role players at low to mid-major programs.

Despite playing with Parade All-American, Alex Legion from Florida International, Benson's role on his Country Day team was relatively small. He was primarily driven by the coaching staff to concentrate on rebounding and defense. Needless to say, recruiting wasn't all that great for Benson as he averaged 6.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5 blocks per game.

Recruited by Howard, Valparaiso and Fairfield, Benson sealed his commitment to Oakland. Coach Greg Kampe was impressed with the raw center’s length and athleticism. Although the transition was tough, Kampe and Benson agreed to redshirt in order to work on his strength conditioning. Three years later Benson has not only emerged as the school's best player, but is also one of the nation's premier centers.

Benson declared for the 2010 NBA draft, but withdrew when he did not receive favorable feedback on his draft status.

jajuan-johnson 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review new-jersey 2011 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

Background: Johnson didn’t play organized ball until 9th grade, and it showed. He often found himself wandering the court not really knowing where he should be. His first two years of high school ball were nothing more than developmental practice on his school’s junior varsity team.

Johnson had height and athleticism, but lacked fundamentals. By the time Johnson entered his junior year coaches decided to move him up to varsity due to vast improvements during the summer when he impressed many major Division I schools. Among those schools, Purdue, Indiana and Xavier all took the initiative to engage the rising junior early on. Johnson’s hard work paid off, and Purdue locked the four star top 100 recruit, thanks to his comfort level with players and coaches. His senior year at Franklin Central proved to be fruitful after he averaged 20.6 points, 9.1 rebounds and 4.3 blocks per game. Since his arrival at Purdue, the school has made it to three consecutive NCAA tournaments including back to back Sweet 16 appearances.

As in his high school career, Johnson has steadily improved his level of play, the culmination of this being last season, where he earned All-Big Ten Second and All-Defensive team honors. Johnson declared for the NBA draft in order to properly gauge his value among teams, but lucky for Purdue, Johnson withdrew after determining that his stock wasn’t high enough. He will likely leave Purdue as one of the school’s all time leaders in blocked shots. To date, Johnson is currently in second place with 184 to Joe Barry Carroll’s 349.
