2001 NBA Draft

ken-johnson 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review miami 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Dominating shot-blocker can change a game just by playing defense without even scoring a point ... Came to Ohio St. raw offensively only scored on put-backs and dunks ... Now has learned to use a consistent hook shot and the occasional jump-shot from 9 feet out ... Work ethic is immeasurable coach able proof of this look no further than his game offensively and from the free throw line where he has improved tremendously ... Athletic can run the floor extremely well and can jump out the gym ... Tough minded kid who plays with a mean streak has the mind set that the paint is his area come in there and your his ... Physically he can become a major defensive force in the NBA now due to his long reach, jumping ability and timing that can make him a Theo Ratliff type player ... Unlike many shot-blockers Johnson controls his body very well and avoids picking up easy fouls ...

Weakness: Could still use some added upper body strength to his thin lean frame ... Lack of body strength make it hard for him to sustain his position on the blocks ... Offense is still not at the NBA level although he has made vast improvements ... Not a dominating rebounder due to the fact that he often is out of position from trying to roam the lane to block shots ... Has a tendency to be overaggressive when playing defense needs to learn that he can't block every shot ... Offense is very predictable because of his lack of offense ... Not much of a passer susceptible to double-teams ... Needs to become a better post target by getting wider on the blocks to make it more easier to pass the ball into him ...

brendan-haywood 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review cleveland94-04 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Has really learned how to take over a game defensively with his shot blocking ability ... Runs the court and moves like no 7 footer should ... Converts most of his shots within 10 feet of the basket thanks to his excellent soft touch ... Has explosive jumping ability for a player of his size this allows him to be a super finisher ... Has developed a abundance of low post moves that he has become quite comfortable with ... Uses a number of spins, hooks shots and up and under's to confuse opposing players on defense ... Still very young for a player graduating college at only 20 years old this alone makes him an intriguing player for NBA Gm's ... Wonderful work ethic strives to be one of the best and on top of that very coach-able listens and has made incredible progress as a player ...

Weakness: Haywood's biggest problem is his lack of intensity and energy during some games he almost looks like he was on another planet ... Needs to make himself a wider target in the post so that it's easier for teammates to get him the ball ... While his rebounding skills are good he could still use a tad bit more help on rebounding techniques such as blocking out and anticipation ... Has a still evolving offensive game but it's coming ... Although he gets to the free throw line he doesn't take advantage of it because of his poor free throw shooting ... Doesn't posses the best stamina although he has improved remarkable since his freshman year in this area ...

antonis-fotsis 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review vancouver95-01 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Has excellent size for a shooting guard standing at 6-9 Fotsis will be able to shoot over most defenders ... Sort of a rhythm shooter once he gets hot can single handily beat you ... Above average athleticism has some leaping ability and can go out on the floor and run ... Like most Europeans he has an all around game ... Good free throw shooter ... Can hit the mid-range jumper consistently from 18 feet out ... Has 3-point range ... Creative in the open court would have no problem playing for a fast offense like a run and gun ... Isn't strange for him to take a defender off the dribble can finish his drive on a variety of ways either a pull up jumper or a dunk ... Has loads of untapped potential can only get better ...

Weakness: 3-point shooting has a tendency to become streaky will literary go through games where he is a non factor offensively ... Still has yet to demonstrate that he can dominate games on a regularly basis ... Will have problems defending doesn't posses the knowledge or focus to become better ... Could stand to gain more upper body strength and body weight is still not where it should be 10-15 pounds would help ... Quickness while good isn't explosive by any means ... Doesn't respond too well to physical play has a tendency to turn the ball over if pressured ...

zach-randolph 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review portland 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Very strong for a player his age often just powered to the basket during his brief college career ... Uses his body well often shielded the opposing defender making it hard to block his shot ... Has great hands and good post footwork able to hold position on the blocks and back down his defender ... Runs the floor well for someone his size ... Soft shooting touch around the basket uses a number of spins and drop steps to score ... Active on the boards can pull down rebounds out of position thanks to his good reach ... Plays good positional defense due to his great lateral quickness and wide body ... Good outlet passer reads the floor well ... Plays with intensity and energy ...

Weakness: Still learning the fundamentals of playing better interior defense ... Doesn't really feel comfortable when he gets the ball out on the perimeter due to his lack of outside shooting ... While he has worked on shedding his baby fat he is still a little bit from being completely toned up ... At times Randolph can force plays when double-teamed often these resulted in turnovers ... Still isn't the most mature player often he can get frustrated at referees calls and during his junior high school year ran into some legal problems ... Not a explosive shot blocker for someone his size lacks the quick leaping ability needed ... Needs to continue to improve on his free throw shooting to take full of advantage his ability to draw fouls ...

ousmane-cisse 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review denver93-03 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Aggressive player just attacks the basket ... Super athletic runs the floor and finishes most plays with a thunderous dunk ... Hustles and gives 110 percent never will you see him not giving it his all ... Quick leaper blocks a high percentage of shots considering his size dominated high school defensively although I doubt he will be as dominating in the NBA ... Powerful rebounder tenacious on the glass just goes for every rebound that's around him no matter where it is ... Has strong quick post moves which usually allows him to get off easy shots ... Very good work ethic and is coach-able something that will be very valuable for whoever gets to the pros ...

Weakness: Ball handling could really stand to be improved on as he will be forced to play further from the basket ... Needs to extend his range as of right now he looks rather uncomfortable taking a shot from 15 feet out ... Offensive his game is still pretty undeveloped at this time ... Has that tweener look on him not a good enough shooter to play small forward and doesn't have the height to play power forward ... Has been listed as high as 6-9 but upon appearance it quickly becomes apparent that he is more 6-7 than anything so you have to wonder can he play the power forward position ... Still learning the fundamentals of the game has gotten this far thanks to his athleticism ... Has a bad habit of hurrying his offensive moves rather than taking his time with the ball ...

jason-collins 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review houston95-02 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

roots 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft ReviewBrother: Jarron Collins

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Unlike his brother Jarron 's finesse game Jason has a power type game ... Has a strong physical presence in the lane with his back to the basket ... Knows how to use his size to box out opposing player for the easy rebounds or put-backs ... Soft hands that catch any pass that comes in his direction ... Draws frequent contact when he turns into his defender for the power basket ... When getting to the charity line unlike many centers in college Jason can make a high percentage of free throws ... Decent foot speed gets by defenders with relative ease when close to the basket ... Is starting to develop a nice 14 foot and in jump-shot ... Plays with a lot of energy in the post making it hard to get a feel for him defensively ...

Weakness: Has had a injury riddled career one has to wonder was it just bad luck or is he injury prone ... Has really started to improve his offense facing the basket but he still is far from doing this consistently ... Post footwork is still a step behind often relies on his fast foot speed to help on offense ... Body could stand to be a little more firm ... Mechanics on his post moves still need to be sharpened ... Not a very explosive player due to his limited athleticism

loren-woods 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review minnesota 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Agile and mobile for a 7- footer runs the court well ... Could easily be considered the best shot-blocker in the country because of the fact that he can dominate a game without even scoring ... Beautiful scoring touch around the basket usually shoots with hooks or flip-ins ... Has all the necessary skills to be a great defensive shot-blocker due to his long arms, leaping ability, anticipation, and quickness ... Gets to the free throw line often and unlike most college centers he converts a huge percentage of his fouls shots ... Has developed a very good face up game that can extend out to 14 feet and in ... Is a very disciplined player rarely does he pick up dumb fouls ... Good passer who sees the court well and looks for open teammates when double-teamed ...

Weakness: Biggest thing for Woods should be to lift some weights and add some muscle mass to his lean body ... Average rebounder although this has more to do with him being out of position as a result of him roaming the lane to block shots ... Doesn't really look all that comfortable on the block against physical players ... At this point in his career Woods isn't really a back to the basket player because of his lack of strength he doesn't hold his position on the blocks ... Had a back injury last year which caused a compression to the disc he then contacted valley fever which may have made the bone weaker ... Could stand to play a little more aggressive sometimes he has a tendency to coast during games ... Post footwork could stand to use some improvement although not bad in college he will need more help in this area once entering the pros ...

michael-bradley 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review toronto 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Has a wide array of post moves and excellent footwork that make him a very hard player to play against when he is in the lane ... Can shot the hook shot with either hand when 8 feet and in from the basket ... Can score facing the basket or with his back to it ... Good rebounder who gets very good position under the glass ... Has a great feel for the game rarely takes bad shots knows his limits offensively ... Unlike many young players Bradley has been very consistent night in and night out... Runs the floor well often beat opposing players down the court ... Wonderful work ethic and on top of that is a very coach-able player ... Has started to develop a more consistent outside game including 3-point range to compliment his inside game ... Great attitude and a willing passer who will give up the ball to open teammates ...

Weakness: Not what one would call a phenomenal athlete this could pose some problems in the NBA ... Not really comfortable creating scoring opportunities for himself needs to be feed the ball ... Lacks some upper body strength ... Not very quick on his feet this really hurts him defensively as his lack of lateral quickness presents defensive problems for him ... Has a lot chances to draw fouls and get to the free throw line thanks to his inside ability but it really doesn't help due in part to his poor free throw shooting ...

sean-lampley 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review chicago 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: One word says it all for the undersized power forward "Warrior" ... Has a strong and thick body that can absorb any contact in the lane ... Team player who is an excellent passer that can create scoring opportunities for teammates ... Shooting range has extended to 17 feet out ... Quick first step and good jumping ability make it hard for taller defenders to stop him ... Isn't a stand still type forward that waits for guards to set him up as his one- on-one capabilities enable him to produce scoring opportunities for himself ... Plays with a lot of energy was without question the catalyst for California this year ... Has really worked on his game every year since entering college in terms of improving all-around skills ... Can be relentless on the glass where his explosive jumping ability gives him multiple chances in getting rebounds ... Average free throw shooter who because of his drives to the basket makes it to the free throw line often ...

Weakness: Another one of those dreaded tweener's who doesn't have the height to play small forward and doesn't have the ball handling to play small forward ... Three point shot is something Lampley struggles at so working on this is a must if he excepts to play small forward in the NBA ... Must continue to prove that his perimeter game is consistent ... Needs to continue to work on the mechanics of his jump shot as sometimes he doesn't shoot from his fingers which causes line drives with little arch ... Needs to work on becoming a better defender in terms of his anticipation and lateral quickness ...

kirk-haston 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review charlotte 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Low post scoring skills are very advanced due to his huge array of offensive weapons ... Very good on the low blocks even if his opponent pushes him away from the basket Haston can shot a beautiful sweeping hook shot from 16 feet out ... Can spot up and hit the jumper even added an occasional 3-point shot to his evolving face up game ... Good rebounder due to his long arms not afraid to bang underneath and holds the ball up high after grabbing the rebound so that opposing players don't get easy strips ... Coaches dream does all the little things that most players don't do ... Real soft scoring touch in the paint converts a high amount of flip-ins, short turnarounds, and put-backs ... Excellent work ethic has improved each year since coming to Indiana which is impressive considering that he wasn't highly recruited out of high school ...

Weakness: Biggest question mark for Haston is that he isn't very strong or athletic something, which the NBA has loads of ... Defensively he has much to learn doesn't possess the lateral quickness or the upper body strength to keep up with the power forwards of the NBA ... Could stand to work on taking the ball to the hole with a more physical presence so that he can draw easier fouls ... Weight not really a concern but could stand to add 10-15 pounds ... Looks a step too slow for the NBA doesn't have that lighting quickness that other players in his draft class posses ... Stronger defenders tend to disrupt his game a little which is usually the case with finesse players ...

steven-hunter 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review orlando 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Agile and quick Hunter moves down the court with the best of them ... Very good shot-blocker with excellent timing and quick leaping ability to go with Hunter's long arms ... Starting to learn that he can make a impact on a game defensively ... Very athletic has excellent mobility often beats opposing defenders on the baseline or down the court where he has the finishing ability to complete a play ... Posses good hands and excellent ball handling skills for a big man ... Biggest thing going for him right now is that he has a tremendous amount of untapped potential ... Good shot selection understands what his limits are offensively and doesn't shoot questionable shots ... Is starting to pick up some post fundamentals such as a hook shot and an up and under move to his arsenal ...

Weakness: Doesn't really play well when facing a physical defender ... Really needs to cut-down on his turnovers mainly due to the fact that he is a very poor passer who doesn't really see the floor that well ... Goes through periods when his lack of confidence hurts his game performance ... Hasn't really learned how to play with his back to the basket although I think this has more to do with his poor post footwork with better work in this area he would be much more effective ... First thing Hunter must do is gain weight at 7-0 220 he will be pushed around in the lane ... Because of his lack of muscle he often has problems establishing position for himself in the low post whether it's posting up for offense or boxing out for rebounds ... Really suffered from the free throw line this year although I think this has more to do from a mental standpoint than ability ...

troy-murphy 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review goldenst 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: A versatile scorer Murphy can shoot the ball inside and out all the way to the 3-point shot ... Unlike most young players Murphy has a solid mid-range game the he can shoot from both sides of the floor ... Moves very well without the ball often he can run off picks and shoot off the catch or dribble ... Good work ethic and a very coach-able player who has gotten better each year since arriving at Notre Dame ... Rebounds well considering his lack of jumping ability this speaks volumes of his mobility and how good he boxes out ... Good passer who is very hard to sneak a double team on without him kicking the ball out ... Good free throw shooter who has become very good at drawing fouls thanks to his pump fakes and hesitation moves ...

Weakness: If he works hard on the defensive part of the game he has a tendency to become worn out ... Although he has become stronger he could still use some added upper body strength ... Suffers on defense with quick player not because he's a poor defender but lacks the lateral quickness to defend ... Has shown a lack of stamina because of his poor conditioning ... Athleticism is one of his biggest handicaps in that he's by no means a high riser or possessor of unbelievable quickness ... Needs to continue to become a better back to basket player as of right now he is more comfortable facing up ... Goes through periods were he can fall in love with his jumper and shoot when it may be in his best interest to drive ...

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Nice all around game can do a little bit of everything whether it's passing and rebounding or scoring ... Can play inside and out has shown that he has worked on becoming a better 3-point shooter ... Moves well without the ball usually likes to catch the ball from about 16 feet and in ... Excellent rebounder for a player his size often this is because he puts himself in good position under the boards ... Draws contact in the lane has shown that he can take a hit and make his shoots on the free throw line ... Above average passer looks for the open man and has descent court vision ... Has shown some leadership ability this past season at Depaul due to the departure of Quentin Richardson ... Quiet player really doesn't look to have much of a ego ... Descent ball handler ...

Weakness: Not the most athletic player doesn't really have that super quickness or jumping ability ... Really had a problem with his conditioning looked tired towards the end of the season and didn't play with much fire ... If Simmons worked on some moves off the dribble this could really benefit him as he doesn't use all the ability that he has ... Although he has improved on his jumper clearly there are moments where it becomes very streaky ....Doesn't play well against physical defenders when this accrues he shies away from contact ... Has been labeled by some to be somewhat of an underachiever due to the fact that he has so much talent and has yet to apply it ...Could stand to cut down on his turnovers ... Might have some problems defensively due not because he is a poor defender but because he has below average lateral quickness ...

richard-jefferson 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review houston95-02 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Athletic and explosive leaping ability were often put on show in the form of an alley-oop or graceful lay-up ... Has numerous ways that he can score with either by moving without the ball or taking defenders off the dribble ... Excellent on the ball defender locked up Illinois guard Frank Williams and fellow draftee Jason Richardson of Michigan St. in this year's NCAA tournament ... Dynamic in the open court literary flies through the air ... Unlike many other high flyers Jefferson doesn't suffer in a half court offense thanks to his descent mid-range game ... Very quick off the floor making him a capable rebounder ... Moves well without the ball for easy lay-ups or coming off screens for jumps shots ... Has become a pretty good passer although not as good as other small forwards in the country ...

Weakness: Needs to work on the mechanics of his shot because he doesn't always have a consistent follow through ... Still learning how to shoot off the dribble .... Ball handling could use some improvement as he has a tendency to get careless with the ball ... Needs to learn how to play the passing lanes better so he can have easy steals ... Mid-range game while improved still isn't the best ... 3-point shot goes through periods when it's off and on...

vladimir-radmanovic 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review seattle 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Versatile player able to score in and out this causes mismatches during games often ... Decently athletic runs the floor well and with his descent leaping ability he is a good finisher in transition ... Has enough quickness to penetrate the lane if the defense is playing his jumper ... Good set shooter from 3-point land although I wouldn't call him a pure shooter but I would say that he has wonderful scoring touch ... Is often relaxed and under control when playing rarely forces shots ... Quick hands enable him to be a threat to steal the ball at any time ... Can shoot the ball with either hand and has a good habit of using his spare hand to seal off defenders ... Good offensive rebounder ...

Weakness: Post up game is non existent due to the fact that he is not very comfortable with his back to the basket ... Needs to move better without the ball ... Defense like most European players isn't up to NBA standards ... Could stand to add about 20 pounds of weight and use it to develop more upper body strength ... While his ball handling is good in Yugoslavia in the NBA it looks like it is a little below average ... Needs to work on becoming a better shooter off the dribble ... Doesn't play defense with a great deal of fire or aggressiveness ...
