2001 NBA Draft

earl-watson 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review seattle 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Plays with loads of heart and hustle is not unusual to see him dive for balls ... Has leadership skills really makes sure his teammates are focused on the game ... Has become a steady 3-point shooter ... Loves to create his offense off the dribble can shake and hit a pull up jumper on most defenders ... Gets to the basket with some regularity thanks to his great hesitation move that he uses to freeze up defenders ... Good strong on the ball defender defense has become one of his best skills ... Can drive and dish with the best of them ...

Weakness: Sometimes he tries to force plays instead of letting the game come to him ... Isn't the best at running a half-court offense ... At times he can get careless with the ball and make bad decisions, which have attributed to many of his turnovers ... Watson during the game can get overaggressive on defense and pick up dumb fouls ... Isn't the best free throw shooter for a player at his position ... Doesn't have that blazing speed that most point guards will have in the NBA ...

kedrick-brown 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review boston 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Super athletic player posses a 45-inch vertical is a threat to catch ally-oops in transition ... Strong NBA ready body was strong enough in Junior College to play in the paint ... Excellent finisher on the fast break lets his athleticism take control along with his good body control ... Can create shots for himself off the dribble doesn't really need a point guard to set him up ... Creates mismatches thanks to his versatile inside outside game as he is too strong for most small forwards and to fast for power forwards ... Plays very good defense blessed with quick hands and has wonderful leaping ability making him a threat to block shots and steal the ball ... Very good rebounder due to his leaping ability which makes it very hard to keep him off the boards ... Descent passer although by no means Lamar Odom ... Shot selection is above average considering his game experience ...

Weakness: Doesn't have that much playing experience when it comes to as he hasn't really played stiff competition ... Needs to work on being better when it comes to ball protection as of right now he has a tendency to be careless with the ball ... 3-point shot still needs to continue to be more consistent while it has improved it is far from reliable ... Must continue on being a better mid-range shooter ... Fundamentally Brown is still learning the do's and dont's of organized ball although this will improve with added game experience ... Unlike most underclassmen Brown doesn't have the option of going back to school (LSU) because of the fact that he is a junior college player ...

michael-wright 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review new-york 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Solid and strong inside player who once he gets his feet set in the lane you can almost chalk up 2 points ... Has the uncanny ability to make very hard shots in the lane with regularity ... Excellent post footwork allows him to set up on the block and seal off his defender ... Tremendous work ethic a gym rat who always gives you 110% when playing on the court ... Has above average post skills and uses his variety of moves such as spins, ball fakes, and hooks shots to establish a scoring presence in the lane ... Wonderful rebounder has excellent technique such as boxing a man out and good anticipation skills that easily made him one of college's best rebounders ... Utilizes his strong body to draw fouls and get to the free throw line frequently ... Good free throw shooter for someone who concentrates on playing in the post ... Understands what his limits are offensively and rarely takes bad shots ...

Weakness: Height is probably the biggest concern for any gm drafting Wright one has to wonder can he play the power forward position at 6-7 ... Viewed by some to have limited potential because his game looks as if he might have peaked near the top of where he can be talent wise ...Very limited range from the perimeter doesn't really look to score out there and rarely does he even attempt a shot ... Poor shot blocker due to the fact that he lacks explosive leaping ability and has poor reaction time ... Really doesn't defend well against players who play out on the perimeter ... Doesn't read double teams all that well this usually makes him susceptible to turnovers ... Poor passer you might as well call him a black hole once the ball goes in it doesn't go out ... Average athlete doesn't really have super quickness or the jumping ability that many players in the NBA posses ...

joe-johnson 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review boston 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Has excellent size to play the small forward or shooting guard positions ... Can really extend the defense because of the fact that he is a consistent 3-point threat ... Owns a smooth first step that he uses to get past defenders and penetrate to the lane ... Has the ability to shoot off the dribble something that most kids need time to develop ... Plays very poised and under control doesn't really let his emotions get carried away in a game ... Wonderful all-around game does a little bit of everything like rebound and look for the open teammate for a pass ... Fast hands and is very good at playing the passing lanes for easy steals ... Has very good ball handling skills for a player of his size could even play some point guard if needed ... Plays with quiet confidence in himself and has shown some ability to be a leader ... Can create his offense off the dribble either on the pull up or using his court vision to pass to an open teammate ...

Weakness: Doesn't have that killer type attitude must strive to maintain his aggressiveness in a game ... Don't have that much upper body strength could stand to lift some weights .... Still doesn't know the ins and outs of a game must continue to hone his fundamentals ... As a coach Johnson can be very frustrating due to his inconsistency one night he can drop 27 point the next night he'll drop 5 points ... Some have questioned his toughness due to the fact that he is not very receptive to physical play ... Needs to protect the ball better as he had to many turnovers ... Needs to stop playing on cruise control and play with some fire although he did show that side more this year ...

rodney-white 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review detroit96-04 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Good size and a NBA ready body although he played power forward and center at Charlotte his NBA position will be small forward ... Versatile player who can take the inside pounding or float outside for the 3-point shot ... Good agility and a excellent first step that makes him hard to guard on the perimeter ... Has a wide arrange of inside post moves that enable him to finish among the trees ... Has the athletic ability to run the floor and be a excellent finisher ... Handles the ball well for a player of his size because of this he has no problem creating scoring opportunities for himself ... Unusually good free throw shooter for a player with his size and age ... Plays with a tremendous amount of passion and energy ... Has became a much stronger player thanks to his off-season weight training ...

Weakness: For all his ability he at times tries to do too much which often leads into careless turnovers ... Even though his rebounding numbers are good there far from showing what he can really do because he doesn't get himself in the best position underneath the boards ... Can fall in love with shooting from the outside that he neglects to go inside when it might be the best chance to score ... Shot selection could still use a little work although this has more to do with him understanding the game a little better ... Defense like most young players could stand to improve especially in the aspects of anticipation and lateral quickness ...

desagana-diop 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review cleveland94-04 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Huge standing at 7-foot and weighing 300 pounds Diop takes up a good amount of space ... Good feel around the basket is starting to learn how to use the glass on his hook shots and most importantly using both hands to score ... Excellent shot-blocker rarely bites on fakes and has long arms to go with quick leaping ability ... Very good rebounder owns a good set of hands that can scrape rebounds and even get rebounds out of position ... Runs the floor well although not nearly as fast as high school chum Tyson Chandler ... Has really started to develop some good post moves even adding a turnaround jumper ... Coach able has improved remarkable considering that he has only really played organized basketball for the past 2 years ... Has loads of raw untapped potential something that Gm's and scouts crave ...

Weakness: Really needs to lose some weight because I personally think he plays way better at 265-270 pounds ... Offensively raw at this point has basically gotten away with being bigger than the competition ... Has a terrible tendency that most young centers have and that is putting the ball on the floor for either a put-back or lay-up which allows smaller players to interfere or worst yet steal the ball ... Fundamentals are far from polished although he has gotten considerably better than he was 3 years ago ... Doesn't possesses the best stamina this could be could be a function of him hauling around more weight (310) like I said if he loses some weight except this problem to subside ... Has to learn when to defend aggressive as he can become foul prone on some occasions during a game ...

jeff-trepagnier 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review cleveland94-04 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Super athletic player owns a 40-inch vertical can jump out the gym ... Quick first step usually able to take his man off the dribble and finish with a acrobatic drive ... Has really become a much better jump shooter since he first stepped on the court as a freshman ... Excellent rebounder for a player at the shooting guard position ... Has very quick hands on defense able to anticipate most passes and plays the passing lanes well ... Moves without the ball and has started to become a better shooter of the screen and catch ... Wonderful work ethic has gotten better each year at USC ... Has excellent body control on his drives makes the hardest play look easy ... Can hit the spot up 3-point shot although by no means automatic ...

Weakness: Most continue to become more consistent from the perimeter and with the 3-point shot ... Needs to work on his ball handling as he can get a little careless with the ball an commit a turnovers ... His size at the shooting guard position might hurt although this is doubtful considering his immense athleticism ... Needs to become a better shooter off the dribble from the perimeter ... Has a tendency when his jump-shot is falling to stop attacking the basket and settle for outside jumpers ... Had a off year for his senior season although this had nothing to do with his game but none the less the outside distractions with the NCAA took him a while to become refocused on basketball ... Could stand to become a better free throw shooter so he can take full advantage of his slashing ability ...

eddie-griffin 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review new-jersey 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Smooth agile player who can run the break and finish gracefully ... Relaxed lets game come to him doesn't let his emotions get in the way of playing ... Devastating shot-blocker for a freshman lead the nation with 4.4 a game ... Posses all the great physical tools for a shot-blocker timing, quick leaping ability, long arms, and lateral quickness ... Versatile scorer who is able to post up or float out for the mid range jumper although this part of his game is still far from being complete ... Very good rebounder gets into great position under the glass that along with his quick hops and strong hands make him a threat to grab rebounds on every play ... Could of come out of high school and been a high lottery pick but decided to go to college one year ... Has started to develop a 3-point shot to go along with his evolving mid-range game ...

Weakness: Should really consider adding 20 pounds of muscle to his lean frame ... Needs to play with energy and passion as he can go through times during a game when he plays lethargic ... Is still at the point in his career where he thinks every shot is a good shot needs to learn better shot selection ... Character has come under fire due in part to his 2 fights one with a college teammate Ty Shine and the other with a high school teammate at Roman Catholic ... Right now he is in sort of a positional limbo between playing small forward and power forward ... Ball handling while not bad could stand a tad bit more improvement on protecting the ball as he turned the ball over too many times ...

brian-scalabrine 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review
  • Name: Brian Scalabrine

  • Height: 6-9 (2.05m)
  • Weight: 240 (109kg)
  • College Team: USC Trojans
  • Nationality: American
  • Birthplace: Long Beach, California

  • Drafted: Selected by the New Jersey Nets in the second round (35th pick overall) of 2001 NBA Draft.
new-jersey 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Has a very versatile game equally dangerous whether its posting up or using his great shooting range for the mid-range shot ... Unselfish player and great passer who looks for teammates to get open and recognizes when double team are coming ... Excellent post footwork really knows how to seal off a defender and make himself available to receive the ball ... Likes to use a pump fake when facing the basket and while defender is the air goes to the basket ... Moves very well without the ball something that most players fail to do ... Average ball handler doesn't really try to do fancy things with the ball ... Average three point shooter when feet are set ... Good free throw shooter ... Runs the floor although I wouldn't him a gazelle ...

Weakness: Biggest issue has to be Scalabrine defense as it is far from being at the NBA level due to his below average lateral quickness ... For his height he is a below average rebounder which may have to be the fact that he is somewhat limited in this area thanks to his lack of athleticism ... Not a very good penetrator due to his somewhat slow first step ... Tweener what position will he play as he doesn't have the strength to play power forward and doesn't have the athleticism to play small forward ... Not much of a shot-blocker in part because he lacks the quick leaping ability to make a impact ...

shane-battier 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review vancouver95-01 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Absolutely one of the best defenders to come out of the college ranks in some time can block, steal and draw charges ... Has shown the ability as a leader as he took a very young but talented Duke team to the championship ... As fundamentally sound as anyone in college basketball knows the game's ins and outs ... Team player who is unselfish will dish if a teammate is open ... Has become a very good three-point shooter often he would spot up and wait for J. Williams to set him up .. Gets into great position on the blocks for rebounds .... Posses some guard skills in that his ball handling is good enough to get past most defenders ... Has good timing on his blocks this is important considering he's not much of a leaper ... Intelligent does a lot of little things that won't show up in the box score and most of the time acted like a second coach on the floor for Duke...

Weakness: Not super athletic has gotten this far based on his fundamentals and intelligence ... Goes through periods were his jump shot can be inconsistent ... Doesn't really defend or play very well against physical players ... Can he make the adjustment to playing defense in the NBA after all the NBA is faster and stronger than the college game ... Even though Battier is a wonderful player he has played with tremendous talent at Duke in terms of point guards (Wojciechowski , Avery , and J. Williams)as teammates ...

teremce-morris 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review atlanta 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Morris has a versatile offensive game one that lets him go inside the paint or float out to the perimeter ... Became a much better defender this year with his timing, long arms, and wonderful vertical allow his to become a shot blocking threat ... Plays with a lot of intelligence not a player who seems to let things bother him which speaks about his maturity ... Can shoot the 3-point shot with relative ease although I wouldn't say he is shooter ... Very athletic runs the floor like a deer and can jump like pogo stick ... Above average rebounder thanks in part to those long arms and good jumping ability ... Has solid fundamentals such as ball handling, shooting, passing and post footwork ... Will have good height for playing the small forward position standing at 6-9 ... Can create for himself thanks to his dribble skills that includes a nice spin move that he often gets most defenders on ... Good free throw shooter ...

Weakness: Morris is a poster boy of why kids go pro early had he left after his sophomore or junior year he would go in the high to mid lottery now he looks more of a late first to early second round pick ... Doesn't have that killer take over the game attitude often he plays passive ... Inconsistent is the one thing Morris brings some days he looks like a bona fide star other days he looks like a role player ... Could stand to use some added body strength many times he had problems with physical play ... Doesn't always shoot the ball with the best form could stand to use his legs more when shooting ... Not much of a back to the basket player so it would be in his best interest to focus more on his post up skills ...

jason-richardson 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review goldenst 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: High-Flyer excels in the open court where his excellent transition game takes control ... Thanks to his wonderful leaping ability he is a very capable rebounder ... Has a quick first step that he utilizes to get pass most defenders ... Slasher gets a lot of points by flying in the lane for either dunks or tip-ins ... Moves well without the ball and is threat for an alley-oop at any time ... Has become a much better set up shooter from mid-range ... Passes well would often slash through the lane and pass to open teammates ... Plays very focused one would think with all his acrobatic dunks and athleticism he would play out of control ... Very good work ethic this summer Richardson lost 20 pounds and worked very hard on his outside shot ... 3-point shot is still a work in progress although is has come very far from where it was as a freshman ...

Weakness: Although he shot the ball better this year he could still use a little more consistency from the outside ... Still learning on how to become a better defender as sometimes he gambles too much ... Still isn't the best shooting off the dribble from 20 feet and in ... Needs to continue to work on the fundamentals of the game and gain a understanding on how to play the game mentally ... Could stand to hit the weights and gain a little more muscle so he can be physically prepared for the 82 game schedule of the NBA ...

will-solomon 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review vancouver95-01 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Quick first step can get in the lane and finish with a variety of lay-ups it's nothing for Solomon to switch hands when he penetrates ... Athletic combo guard who has great hops and a pro body that enables him to finish in traffic or in the open court ... Has great confidence in his game feels that he is one of the best in the country and is one heck of a trash talker ... Really improved on his free throw shooting this year allowing him to gain easier points ... Scores the majority of his points with perimeter shooting and driving to the basket where he is absolutely fearless ... Although short for a shooting guard his long arms give him the advantage he needs to get a shot off ... Has shown the ability to hit the spot up 3-point shot ... Relentless although double teamed for the majority of the season Solomon never gave up and continued to play ...

Weakness: The biggest problem Solomon will face is that he is a shooting guard trapped in a point guard's body ... Really hasn't shown the ability to get other evolved in the offense although one could argue that his teammates weren't the most talented ... Stats are a tad bit inflated as he got a lot of his points after games were decided ... Possesses a streaky jumper and really hasn't shown to have the best shot selection ... Has really struggled scoring against big defenders something that he will face in the NBA at the shooting guard position every night ... Has a tendency to take too many jumpers from the outside when his shot isn't falling ... Must continue on improving his defense such as anticipation and playing focusing better on playing the passing lanes ...

eddy-curry 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review chicago 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Huge at 290 he fills the lane and knows how to use his body runs the floor well though not a speedster ... Is the most mobile, and agile player his size that I have just about ever seen ... Physical inside player draws contact and gets to the free throw line ... Good hands catches most passes thrown into post after getting it he can power the ball to the basket or use his variety of post moves ... Explosive leaper gets off the floor quickly and can dunk with authority ... Unlike many young power players Curry doesn't struggle from the free throw line ... Due to his strength and surprisingly quick jumping ability Curry can rebound with the best of them ... Limitless potential the only thing that could stop Curry from achieving star status is him ...

Weakness: Height although he is listed at 6-11 he looks about 6-10 so one has to wonder will he continue to grow and what position will he play power forward or center ... Has not always been in the best of shape one has to wonder if he has the drive to keep himself in shape ... Must continue to watch his weight (Curry did lose 30 pounds this season) as he has a tendency to wavier a few pounds during the season ... Looks lost when he is 14 feet from the basket needs to develop some moves facing the basketm... Has had some games where he has looked sluggish and uninterested in the action although to his credit this usually didn't happen all that often but has happened enough to worry some scouts ...

pau-gasol 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review atlanta 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

roots 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft ReviewBrother: Marc Gasol
2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Good face up shooter can shoot from the perimeter as far as the 3-point line ... Runs the floor well loves to operate in the open court for the dunk ... Due to his excellent height Gasol can shoot over most defenders ... Creates mismatches due to his ability to play multiple positions (SF, PF, C) ... Can dribble past most defender for the penetration once there he can dish to the open teammate ... Smart player is a quick learner and can adjust his game according to how the defense plays him ... Has a nice pull up jumper off the dribble ... Some scouts have said that Gasol reminds them of Toni Kukoc but I must say he resembles a more polished Robert Horry ...

Weakness: Not very good playing with his back to the basket ... Doesn't have the best upper body would stand to gain more muscle ... Not a very good defender doesn't have the intensity, or the speed to guard fast players ... Needs to gain about 10-15 pounds depending on what position (PF/SF) he will play... Could stand to develop some moves in the low post ... Shot selection isn't as good as it should be needs to relax more and let the game come him ... The team drafting him might have to wait until next year to receive Gasol as he has one more year left on his contract with Barcelona ...

gilbert-arenas 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review goldenst 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Excellent first step owns a variety of penetration moves like stutter steps, crossovers, and change of directions moves to get in the lane ... Loves to create offense for himself especially when playing in one-on-one situations ... Has become a much more consistent 3-point shooter from the outside ... Defensively he has quick hands and plays the passing lanes well for easy picks ... For his age he owns pretty good shot selection something that will be very valuable at the next level ... Can play a small amount of time at the point guard position ... Smooth creates well in traffic and can finish with some flair like floaters and reverses ... Average rebounder for his size although his numbers aren't great but remember he played with Michael Wright and Loren Woods so not that many rebounds went astray ... Above average shooter off the dribble can shake and shoot with the best of them ...

Weakness: Has troubles defensively defending taller players this will cause him to be a liability on defense ... Tweener doesn't have the natural play making ability to play point guard and doesn't have the height (6-3) to play shooting guard ... Turnovers are a problem for Arenas often because he tries to do too much with ball ... Has a tendency to shoot erratic from the 3-point line although this has more to do with his mechanics so he can correct this ... Must continue to enhance his mid-range as it goes through periods of inconsistency although this happened less this year ... Should work on improving his ball handling while it was good in college for a shooting guard the point guard postion might be what he plays full time in the NBA ...

tyson-chandler 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review clippers 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Super talented shot-blocker posses all that is needed for a great defensive player lateral quickness, explosiveness, long arms, and excellent timing ... Feels comfortable facing the basket can hit jump shots from about 16 feet out and has even shown the ability to hit the 3-point shot ... Super athletic runs the floor like a gazelle and can hop out the gym with the best of them ... Above average free throw shooter for someone of his size ... Moves around the lane well and has a feathery touch around the basket ... Has some descent passing ability rarely gets trapped into a double team ... Biggest thing going for him is that he's a athletic 7-footer who has loads of untapped potential the one thing scouts love more than anything ...

Weakness: Rail thin could stand to gain 20 pounds of muscle ... Against physical players such as Ousmane Cisse Chandler didn't respond well and doesn't like to mix it up inside ... One would think as tall as he is that Chandler would have some kind of post moves but instead looks very uncomfortable with his back to the basket ... Rebounding despite the high numbers isn't as strong as one would think because he lacks the intensity and lacks the upper body strength to be dominate rebounder at the NBA level ... Goes through periods during a game where his concentration lacks and doesn't really seem to hustle to make plays ... Could stand to upgrade his ball handling due to fact he lacks the post moves or strength to play the post and will be further from the basket ... Everyone talks about his immaturity but to honest if most kids before they went to high school were featured on 60 minutes and tabbed a great one how many people would be able to take all the hype ?... Although clearly at 18 years old Chander coud have some problems dealing with the fame and fortune of being a millionaire ...
