drew-neitzel-1.jpg Portsmouth Invitational Tournament - The Draft Review

  • College Team: Michigan State Spartans

  • Birthplace: Grand Rapids, Michigan
  • Birthdate: 5/7/1985
  • Drafted: Automatically eligible for the 2008 NBA Draft but was not selected by an NBA franchise ...
michigan_st Portsmouth Invitational Tournament - The Draft Review

Strengths: Fundamentally, there is little that Neitzel does not do by the book … Does an excellent job of moving around without the ball in his hands … Has a tremendous grasp on using screens to create space for catch and shoot opportunities … Neitzel's quick release enables him to convert shots with little time needed to set-up … Makes excellent decisions on the court, which explains why he doesn’t create turnovers … Quality ball handler who has no problem handling the ball against heavy pressure … Has legit NBA three point range that he can make with regularity … Defensively, Neitzel displays good effort, toughness and court awareness … Feel for the game is impressive … Decent finisher in transition where he has the ability to make difficult shots with either hand via a runner or floater … Unselfish player who constantly thinks to involve teammates … Excellent free throw shooter … Solid passer who does a great job of recognizing open players in drive and dish situations … Well conditioned player who never seems to stop moving or tire … A gym rat with a great work ethic to sharpen his skills … Neitzel possesses the basketball IQ to thoroughly think the game through and make in-game adjustments depending how the opposing defense is guarding him … Despite not being able to create space, Neitzel is an excellent mid-range shooter off the dribble …

Weaknesses: Defensively, Neitzel’s lateral quickness makes him vulnerable to being able to effectively guard athletic point guards … Because of this he is rarely able to get good separation from his defender, as he lacks a quick first step … A great passer, but lacks the exceptional court vision many of his fellow peers at the point guard position possess - Neitzel thinks plays before they happen while others see plays develop before they happen … Didn’t have the season many expected, but to his credit he ended his senior season playing well … Lacks the ability to consistently create off the dribble in isolation situations … Neitzel lacks the upside and, in some people minds, the athleticism needed to have much of an upside … At time seems to settle too much for shooting from the perimeter instead of driving to the basket this season … Is often the opposing coaches best chance to exploit the team defense that Michigan State plays by making Neitzel’s assignment play aggressive and attack …. At the NBA level he will be a post up target for the bigger point guards … Seemed to struggle with his confidence level this season …

oklahoma_city Portsmouth Invitational Tournament - The Draft Review

Background: Growing up in Teaneck can be hard for anyone, but it was especially difficult for Irick. His mother was killed and his father struggled with a substance abuse problem. But despite these challenges Irick made a solid splash into the competitive Northern New Jersey basketball community and earned a top 225 prospect ranking by most recruiting services. As a senior at Teaneck High School he averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists per game and also earned second team all-state honors. Irick struggled academically, but went on to do extremely well at Vincennes Junior College. Division I schools Providence, Missouri and Morehead State soon became interested in his services, but when past academic issues resurfaced Irick had to sit out a year. He went back home to attend Bergen Community College and earned the remaining credits required for transfer to a four-year institute. Oklahoma City coach Ray Harper kept up on Irick and offered him a scholarship. Since then Irick’s career at Oklahoma City has been a success with back to back NAIA championships.

duke Portsmouth Invitational Tournament - The Draft Review

Strengths: Possesses an NBA body that is blessed with excellent upper body strength … Has improved quite a bit on ball handling since last season … Very good athlete with great quickness and leaping ability … Has legit NBA three point range that he should be able to make with regularity … Owns a terrific 1st step that allows him to get to the basket … Once there his body control and upper body strength allow him to absorb contact and finish … Court awareness and intelligence have developed nicely since last season … Has a very good understanding how to move without the ball in his hands … An excellent perimeter defender that has many of the physical tools needed to be effective on the next level … With quick hands, sound lateral movement and long arms, Nelson is capable of disrupting opposing guards … Uses his anticipation skills to play passing lanes for steal opportunities … For his size, Nelson is a capable rebounder thanks to his athleticism and long arms … Has become a better decision maker when the ball is in his hands … Creates a good deal of contact due to his aggressive playing style … Mental toughness has been apparent throughout his career as he's continued to play through various injuries … High character person off the court and has been trouble free even as far back as high school …

Weaknesses: Nelson has been a little injury prone throughout his career at Duke, which could leave some to question his durability … Standing at 6-foot-3 he lacks the ideal height at the shooting guard position … Tends to over penetrate, which often forces him to pick up his dribble when the lane is congested … Despite being such a solid perimeter shooter he remains a poor free throw shooter … Hasn’t lived up to the press clippings that were placed on him entering college, which makes one wonder if he peaked early … Could have some problems getting his shot off on the next level as Nelson possesses a slow release when shooting the ball … Isn’t able to gain complete separation from his defender after his initial first step … Some NBA teams may view him as a combo-guard, but his passing ability and ball handling aren’t as polished as one would like to see … Has problems getting involved offensively if his perimeter shooting is off … Sometimes tries to go for the spectacular play instead of settling for a simple, less difficult move … Nelson shows good shooting touch from mid-range, but doesn’t utilize it nearly as much as he should - most of his shots are drives or three point shots … Not very adept at shooting off screens off the dribble …
