pittsburgh Portsmouth Invitational Tournament - The Draft Review

Background: Gary McGhee - Growing up in the talent rich state of Indiana, McGhee struggled to stand out in the early part of his development. But thanks to the help of his father, Gary Sr., a former track and field athlete for Indiana University, things began to turn around.

At the end of his sophomore year, McGhee began to show promise by impressing many with his play at the Nike All-American camp. The offers soon began to pour in as DePaul, Indiana, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Wisconsin and Pittsburgh were among the schools battling for his services. In the end, it was Pittsburgh that stood out for McGhee. He was impressed by head coach Jamie Dixon’s ability to improve players, like former NBA draftee Aaron Gray.

The Red Chip top 150 recruit finished his senior year at Highland averaging 20.6 points, 11.6 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game, while earning all state nominations from various Indiana publications. During his first two years at Pittsburgh, McGhee was just a back-up for NBA draftee DeJuan Blair. Yet McGhee practically quadrupled his minutes last season while leading Pittsburgh in field goal percentage, rebounding and blocked shots. McGhee remains a raw prospect, but because of the thin talent at the center position, he still has many positives.

illinois Portsmouth Invitational Tournament - The Draft Review

Background: Hunting and Illinois basketball have always been constant in the Tisdale home. Tisdale could often be found hunting deer with his father and brother, or fishing by a quiet pond. As self-proclaimed small town country boy with a humble disposition, Tisdale is also a small town celebrity. In a place where everyone knows everyone, Riverton residents were fans of 6-foot-8 high school sophomore.

Tisdale was gangly and lacked immediate coordination with the rapid 9-inch growth spurt he experienced during his freshman to sophomore years in high school. Yet he still caught recruiters’ eyes with his solid play in the Nike summer camp heading into his junior year. Despite scholarship offers from Purdue and Southern Illinois, once Illinois head coach Bruce Weber made an offer, Tisdale’s commitment came quickly. With his dream school locked, his high school career came to a nice close. The top 125 red chip averaged 28.6 Points, 14.0 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game, and earned various all-state honors from respected state publications. Many felt that Tisdale might have to redshirt his first season due to his lack of strength, but substandard options in the frontcourt took away that option for the Illinois program.

Tisdale has shown great improvement each year, but really showed himself this past year by being more aggressive and physical in the post.

south_florida Portsmouth Invitational Tournament - The Draft Review

Background: As a high school senior coming out of Blessed Sacrament, Jarrid was anything but famous on the recruiting scene. The ailing program wasn’t very good, but Famous, along his cousin, Curtis Dennis (New Mexico), took the program to new heights. Together they helped lead the program to the New York Class B championship, while Famous averaged 17.7 points and 6 rebounds per game.

Virtually unknown even in his own state of New York, Hartford University quietly secured a commitment, beating out contenders Charleston and Long Island for his service. Famous didn’t feel that he was getting the respect of bigger colleges and, compounded with unstable grades, prevented him from attending Hartford. This caused Famous, alongside his high school teammate, Curtis Dennis, to take a prep year at Gulf Shores Academy.

Unfortunately, his poor scholastic situation reared its ugly head once again as he did not achieve an adequate SAT score for college entrance At the urging of his father, Famous decided went on to junior college at Westchester Community College focus on academics and raise his profile with recruiters. This is where he exploded on the junior college scene, averaging 23.5 points, 12.3 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game during his two seasons.

The top 10 JUCO selected South Florida over Seton Hall, Missouri, Arizona, and Houston. Much of this had to do with his relationship with South Florida coach Stan Heath, and the ability to go into a situation where playing time wouldn’t be an issue. In his first season of Division One basketball, Jarrid Famous has been solid. The general trend Junior College players is that their final season is always their best.

brian-qvale Portsmouth Invitational Tournament - The Draft Review
  • Name: Brian Qvale
  • Position: Center
  • Height: 6-11 (2.11m)
  • Weight: 265 (120kg)
  • College Team: Montana Grizzlies
  • Nationality: American
  • Birthplace: Williston, North Dakota
  • Birthdate: 11/3/1988
  • Drafted: Automatically eligible for the 2011 NBA Draft but was not drafted by an NBA franchise.
montana Portsmouth Invitational Tournament - The Draft Review

Backgrounds: Growing up in Qvale household was anything but small as father Sanford was a 6-foot-8 offensive lineman and 1974 NFL Draftee of the Buffalo Bills from North Dakota State. His brother Brent, now 6-foot-7, is currently an offensive lineman at Nebraska University. One would think all that football blood flowing through Brian would steer him to the gridiron, but his mother Carol was a basketball player in college for North Dakota-Williston.

At Williston High School Qvale was extremely active, earning 12 letters in 4 sports: football (4), basketball (4) and baseball (3), and finishing with one in track. Scholarship offers in baseball and football really started to blossom during his junior year, but these offers dried up once it became clear that Qvale would give up baseball and football to concentrate of basketball.

Qvale’s recruiting situation didn’t materialize quickly until his AAU team took road trips to Las Vegas where he outperformed higher rated prospects. He often states that the coaching he received at basketball camps at Iowa State and Gonzaga aided his development. Suddenly, Idaho, Washington State, Montana, Wichita State and Wyoming all came running for Qvale’s commitment. In the end he found Montana was the more favorable environment. He also looked forward to playing with his AAU buddy, Derek Selvig.

In his senior year Qvale took Williston High School to a third place finish in the North Dakota State championship, averaging 21 points and 11 rebounds per game. The white chip recruit was rated in the top 800 players in his class and was a mere project during his freshmen and sophomore years. But Qvale took a huge leap in his progress and had a breakout year. This undoubtedly helped the University of Montana to a NCAA tournament berth after a 4 year drought.

  • Drafted: Automatically eligible for the 2011 NBA Draft but was not drafted by an NBA franchise.
south_carolina Portsmouth Invitational Tournament - The Draft Review

Background: As the cousin of former South Carolina Gamecock and All-SEC player, Carlos Powell, Muldrow has always had an affinity for the program. It came as no surprise when the rising big man committed immediately after former South Carolina Head Coach, Dave Odom, made the offer. Citing the school’s location and his friendships within the program that developed over the years, Muldrow was an easy recruit. Yet shockingly, most recruiting gurus slept on Muldrow nationally, often listing him as a three star top 150 recruit.

As a senior at Wilson high school Muldrow averaged 19 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks per game while earning various South Carolina Player of the Year honors through multiple media outlets. Muldrow’s progress was slow at times in his first two years on the program with academic issues and his proneness to fouls keeping him off the court. Yet Muldrow took huge strides last year by keeping his aggressiveness in check and displaying his shot blocking ability, and fluidity to run the floor. His play earned him SEC All-Defensive Team honors as he blocked 97 shots, which was good enough to finish second in the SEC and 10th nationally.

There have been some rumors that the South Carolina coaching staff is entertaining the idea of Muldrow redshirting this season. Athletically, Muldrow has all the physical tools that NBA teams love, but he will need to improve offensively and continue to develop his upper body strength.

memphis Portsmouth Invitational Tournament - The Draft Review

Background: Coleman entered his first year of organized ball as a junior at Pacelli Catholic. Unlike some raw prospects with tales of development, Coleman’s impact was instant as he helped guide the school to its first ever berth in the Georgia State Tournament. Much of this can be contributed to his natural athletic gifts.

Coleman was a Track and Field track state champion in the 100-and 200-meter dashes, with a vertical jump of 40+-inches. He played his senior year at Glenwood where he averaged 17.2 points and 10.6 rebounds per game while leading the school to a state championship. Despite his success, Coleman lacked any real publicity or exposure, because he never played AAU ball.

He originally signed with Arkansas-Little Rock, but academics were a roadblock, so he set out for Miami-Dade Junior College to improve his grades while raising his profile. Coleman entered the school at 6-foot-8 and weighing a mere 215 pounds. By his sophomore year Coleman grew to an intimidating 6-foot-9 and 245 pounds, and went from two-star recruit status into a four-star, top 10 junior college prospect. During his two years at Miami-Dade Coleman averaged 10.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 4.4 blocks per game while having schools such as Pittsburgh, Kentucky, Tennessee and Connecticut after his services.

In the end Coleman chose Memphis due in large part to the school’s ability to develop NBA players. He endeared himself to Memphis fans after he held his commitment when former Memphis head coach John Calipari left for Kentucky. Coleman’s first season of Division I basketball was one of learning, yet he still led his team in rebounds, blocked shots and field goal percentage.
