viktor-khryapa 2004 NBA Draft - The Draft Review new-jersey 2004 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Smart, efficient player with great fundamentals ... A versatile player who has the ability to play multiple positions on the floor. Because of this he is able to produce mismatches that he uses to his advantage ... Moves well without the ball and constantly works to get open for the quick lay-in or short jumper... Has developed into a solid mid-range shooter although he is still far from perfect. He has shown considerable improvement from 15 feet out... A wonderful ball handler who is capable of leading the break or driving past his defender... Decent rebounder due to his long arms and above average leaping ability ... Excels in an open court offense as he is an adequate speed running the court and is a solid finisher in transition ... Khryapa is blessed with excellent court vision. Because of this he rarely gets trapped in double teams and always looks to set-up his teammates with the quick pass ... Has shown steady improvement and has great potential...

Weakness: Defensively he needs to work on his lateral quickness. He seems to struggle when having to defend athletic players on the perimeter... Unlike many of his European counterparts, Khryapa is not the seasoned pro many are at his age. The quality of his competition is questionable, limiting his development to an extent... Shooting mechanics need to be refined as he tends to bring the ball from his waist which produces a slow release, giving his defender time to block or steal the ball... Offensively his game remains somewhat predictable ... Confidence can wavier from time to time if he feels intimidated. Khryapa can freeze himself out of the game ... While he has back to the basket moves he doesn't posses the necessary bulk to withstand the physical pounding of the American game which will make it hard for him to set-up in the lane ... Although his shooting has improved tremendously this past year, he still has trouble shooting off the dribble as he is more of a set shooter. This could be a problem for him in terms of getting his shot off in the NBA ... Has yet to master the defensive fundamentals such as anticipation and timing that are required to be a shot-blocker... Doesn't possess consistent 3-point range on his shot...

pavel-podkolzine 2004 NBA Draft - The Draft Review utah95-04 2004 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Extremely mobile for a player his size as he runs the floor with ease ... Shows solid and still evolving low post moves such as the turnaround jumper and hook shot ... Physically Podkolzine takes up a great deal of space at 300 pounds and does a great job of clogging the lane ... Really has a knack for rebounding for a player with his limited game experience ... He boxes out his man well and shows good ball location skill to locate rebounds ... Possesses good range on his jumper for a player his size and can shoot out to 15-16 feet with some consistency ... Unselfish and is a much better passer than advertised ... Is a solid finisher around the basket due to his soft touch ... Shows above average lateral quickness enabling him to cover a good amount of ground defensively ... Upside is tremendous for a player with his physical ability and age ... Surprisingly he possesses good relation to the basket skills ... Above average ball handler for his size although he's not gonna take too many opposing centers off the dribble ... Extremely coachable, since his move from Russia he has improved considerably ...

Weakness: Some have been questioning his durability because he missed a few games due to an ankle injury ... This injury really limited his progression for a good portion of the year ... Doesn't really play with the intensity and aggressiveness one would like with his size ... Low post moves are still in the developmental process as he feels more comfortable facing the basket ... Doesn't have the big game experience that his international brethren have ... Fundamentally he is still learning the nuances of the game ... Court awareness isn't what it should be during games ... Despite his size his lack of confidence in his low post moves prevents him from taking advantage of mismatches ... Defensively he shows above average instincts but lacks the experience needed to use them ... Will be a project for any team drafting him and wont be a major contributor for a while ... Can be a little foul prone when having to guard physical players ... Not much of a free throw shooter ... Doesn't do a great job of using his size to draw contact in the lane ...

STERN DIRECTS FORFEITURE OF DRAFT PICKS, FINES TEAM $3.5 MILLION, VOIDS CONTRACTS

NBA Punishes Timberwolves for Secret Deal with Smith

October 25, 2000

NEW YORK -- The National Basketball Association today announced that Commissioner David Stern has taken the following actions based upon an arbitrator's ruling on Monday that the Minnesota Timberwolves, Joe Smith, and agent Eric Fleisher entered into a secret agreement in violation of the NBA's salary cap rules:

  • directed the forfeiture of Minnesota's own first-round draft picks in the 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 NBA Drafts;

  • fined the team $3.5 million; and

  • voided the player contract between Smith and the Timberwolves for the 2000-01 season, along with all contracts previously entered into by Smith and the team.

In addition to these penalties, the Collective Bargaining Agreement also authorizes the Commissioner to suspend team personnel who were involved in the making of the secret agreement. Those suspensions will be determined after subsequent proceedings before the arbitrator.

The NBA has also requested that, as required by the CBA, the Players Association impose appropriate discipline on Mr. Fleisher for his violation of the salary cap rules.

On December 9, 2000

MINNESOTA -- Minnesota Timberwolves vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale agreed to take a leave of absence until July 31. Owner Glen Taylor agreed to take a leave of absence until July 31. Because of their cooperation in doing this without going through arbitration the NBA agreed to restore their 2003 first round draft pick.

December 28, 2003

NEW YORK-- The NBA announced today that it has restored the Minnesota Timberwolves first round pick in the 2005 NBA Draft. This pick had been forfeited by the Timberwolves in December 2000 in connection with the salary cap circumvention case involving the Timberwolves and Joe Smith.

"In light of the other penalties that have been imposed on the Timberwolves, and the team's conduct since the Smith matter concluded," said NBA Commissioner David Stern, 'we feel it is appropriate to restore the Timberwolves first round pick in 2005."

As a result of the Smith case, the Timberwolves will have forfeited their first round picks in the 2001, 2002and 2004 NBA Drafts, and paid a fine to the league of $3.5 million.
