2004 Scouting Report:
Strengths: Plays excellent perimeter defense as Nelson puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the opposing teams ball handler... Moves extremely well without the ball... Plays under control and patient doesn't try to force plays that aren't there ... Smart fundamentally sound player who has a great feel for the game ...Shows great awareness to read the defense before breakdown his defender... Despite his height Nelson does a great job of using the glass to convert tough shots ... Has the quickness, body shiftiness, and change of direction speed to get good separation from his defender... Once in the lane he will dish off to the open shooter if the shot isn't there ... Possesses a solid and sturdy body that should be able to withstand the rigors of the NBA ... Has tremendous leadership skills ... Controls the tempo of a game like few can at his position in the country ... Court vision is truly special as he sees the floor with such ease ... This is one of the reasons coupled with his natural unselfishness why he is such a great passer... Quick hands enable him to get a good amount of steals ...Tough minded kid who has the desire needed to improve ...
Weakness: Has troubles defensively defending taller players this will cause him to be a liability on defense ... Tweener doesn't have the natural play making ability to play point guard and doesn't have the height (6-3) to play shooting guard ... Turnovers are a problem for Arenas often because he tries to do too much with ball ... Has a tendency to shoot erratic from the 3-point line although this has more to do with his mechanics so he can correct this ... Must continue to enhance his mid-range as it goes through periods of inconsistency although this happened less this year ... Should work on improving his ball handling while it was good in college for a shooting guard the point guard postion might be what he plays full time in the NBA ...
