leandrinho-barbosa 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review san-antonio89-04 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Excellent athlete blessed with great leaping ability and quickness ... A tremendous ball handler able to take most defenders off the dribble ... Creative finisher when he drives in the lane as he can adjust his shot according to how the defense reacts ... For his size he is an explosively quick player... Barbosa's quickness becomes evident when he pushes the ball to ignite the fast break ... Defensively he has the long wingspan and quick hands needed to disrupt passing lanes ... Understands how to create contact on his drives to enable free throw opportunities ... Makes excellent use of the glass when shooting the leaning jumper 16 feet from the basket... Owns cat like body control to get off acrobatic lay-ups ... Shows solid lateral quickness to stay in front of most opposing players ... Great leaper who combined with his long arms can block smaller guards shots ... Shows above average court vision to recognize open teammates on the floor... Quick first step enable him to gain good separation from his defender... A capable 3-point shooter when his feet are set... Solid rebounder thanks to his long arms and leaping ability ...

Weakness: Will need to bulk and gain more upper body strength ... Really needs to focus on refining his shooting mechanics ... As of now he doesn't keep his shooting elbow tight and his release is funny ... Due to his aggressive nature he has a tendency to get out of control when slashing to the basket... Not a great shooter from behind the three point line off the dribble due to his slow release ... Mid range shooting is still a work in progress ... Still developing his point guard skills such as controlling tempo and decision making ... Needs to continue to improve on getting his teammates consistently involved in the offense ... Forces too many passes that are not there due to his lack of patience ... Tends to pick-up quick fouls as he has a bad habit of being overly aggressive with his man ...

kendrick-perkins 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review memphis 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Unlike many young players his age, Perkins is not infatuated with playing on the perimeter. He plays strictly a power game and is capable of dominating the low post ... Fundamentally he has added various offensive moves, from a drop step, to an up-and-under, and even the rarely utilized jump hook which he can shoot over most defenders ... Perkins is very mobile around the lane and he has no problem running on the break despite his size ... Has an excellent pair of hands that can catch most passes thrown into the post ... Once there, his soft touch around the basket allows him to convert easily ... Does a good job of drawing contact to bait his defender into fouling ... Has shown decent passing skills when double teams occur ... Physically he has an NBA build that has yet to fill out ... An above average rebounder who uses his body to gain good position under the glass ... Possesses solid footwork on defense enabling him to stay in front of most defenders ... Each year he has developed in some area of his game ... Work ethic remains strong despite all the hype ...

Weakness: Athletically he is not what you would call a high flyer ... Despite the numbers he will not be the super shot-blocker that he is in high school due to his average leaping ability ... Body wise he has the weight to play in the pro's but he needs to focus on getting his body better conditioned as the NBA will be faster and more physical ... Could stand to add a more consistent jumper 15 feet from the post ... Post footwork needs refinement... Doesn't always play aggressive during games, and has a tendency to play down to the level of his competition although to his credit, he steps his level of play up when facing top competition ... Shot selection, while not bad, can suffer along with his confidence if things aren't going well and he will force shots ... Needs to develop better moves when facing up on his defender, as he's more comfortable banging down low with his back to the basket ...

rick-rickert 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review minnesota 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Rickert's height allows few defenders to disrupt his shot release ... Has a wide assortment of low post moves from a drop step to an up and under... Has really improved with shooting the hook shot with either hand ... When his feet are set he displays above average 3-point range on his jumper... Shows superb post footwork and agility to maneuver around the basket... Can make the mid range jumper from 18 feet out... When opponents come out to pressure his shot he likes to take them baseline off the dribble ... Shows that innate feel for the game many young players lack ... Versatile offensive player who can take his defender inside or out to create mismatches ... For his size he is a solid runner of the court ... Shows the makings of being an above average passer for someone at his position ... Great finisher around the basket where he is capable of making some impressive lay-up's ... Doesn't shy away from the ball in clutch situations ... When his jumper starts to fall consistently he can take over a game ... Possess soft touch around the basket to convert close shot accurately...

Weakness: Perimeter defense remains suspect due to his average foot speed ... Could stand to add 20-25 pounds of weight to strengthen his upper body ... This lack of upper body strength really causes problems for Rickert when it comes to establishing position on the low blocks ... Has yet to consistently display dominance as he seems to lack that killer instinct ... Can be foul prone when having to guard physical low post players ... Lack of aggressiveness and average upper body strength tend to limit his production when rebounding ... While he has a nice assortment of low post moves, he doesn't always play fully comfortable when his back is to the basket... But this could be a another strength issue ... If he is to play small forward Rickert will need to become more efficient when it comes to taking his man off the dribble ... At this point in his career Rickert is kind of a tweener not strong enough to play power forward ... Lacks the quickness and foot speed to defend small forwards ... Ball handling and better protection will be a must to improve upon if he is to play the small forward position in the NBA ... Can at times settle for the outside shot instead of driving in the lane to draw fouls ...

tommy-smith 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review chicago 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Athletically Smith possess cloud piercing jumping ability ... Few players at his height can run the floor with his speed ... Excels in a fast break type of offense ... Always active as a defender thanks to long arms and footspeed ... Shows great skill as a help defender with his shot blocking ability ... Offensively Smith understands how to use his quickness to get separation from his defender ... Excellent slasher who moves very well without the ball for easy scoring opportunities ... With his athleticism he makes some impressive dunks in transition ... Has greatly improved his perimeter shooting over the past two seasons ... Attacks the basket with aggressiveness if he is able to drive past his defender ... Owns a solid work ethic and most importantly the hunger to improve ... Can be a headache for opposing defenses as he creates mismatches with his versatility to play both forward positions ... Has three point range on his jumper but must gain consistency ...

Weakness: Needs to work on consistently taking opposing defenders off the dribble ... Could stand to gain more weight and add upper body strength ... This improvement in upper body strength would allow for him to finish better after contact occurs ... Back to the basket skills are in need of development as he prefers to face the basket... Defensively he is very foul prone when guarding a physical post player... Shooting from mid-range remains streaky ... Confidence can go through periods of ups and clowns during a game ... Not really a player who enjoys physical contact... Defensively he will need to improve on perimeter defense ... Needs to improve on his ball protection due to his carelessness with the ball... Lack of strength hurts him under the boards as he can be easily boxed out... Poor free throw shooter ... Needs to work on being a more consistent shooter when behind the three point line ... Court awareness can be questionable at times due to the tentative nature of his play ... Is still very turnover prone as he tends to force passes ...

brian-cook 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review lakers 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

roots 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft ReviewFather: Norm Cook

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Creates mismatches with his versatility as he has the ability to play both forward spots ... Shows solid post footwork when getting the ball on the block ... Prefers to catch the ball in the high post where his face up game is most effective ... Has the ability to make the 18 foot jumper with some regularity ... Great finisher around the basket where he is able to make difficult shots due to his long arms and soft touch ... Shows solid mobility for a player his size as he can run the court with ease ... Although not a spectacular rebounder but when motivated he can be a solid presence underneath the glass ... Great free throw shooter at his position ... Has a solid grasp of the fundamental aspect of the game ... Shows above average ball handling for his size ... Owns a great turnaround jump shot from 14 feet from the basket... Does a good job of recognizing double teams ... Solid passer when he receives the ball in the high post... Keeps the ball high after the post entry feed...

Weakness: His desire is one big question mark, how badly does he want to improve? ... Athletically Cook lacks the explosive leaping ability needed to be an effective shot blocker... Shot selection could stand improvement as he can settle for taking the perimeter jumper... Although he has improved his back to the basket moves, he is still in need of development... Needs to work on consistently taking opposing defenders off the dribble ... Lack of ball protection skills create a fair amount of turnovers ... Has the looks of a tweener in that he is without a true position in the NBA ... Can go through moments where his doesn't display much aggressiveness although he has improved this year... Struggles at times when guarded by a physical defender... Has 3-point range on his jumper but clearly can become too infatuated with firing from the top of the key ... Would benefit with adding 10-15 more pounds of muscle to his body if he is too play power forward ... Mental toughness leaves a little to be desired ... Defensively Cook must improve on playing better positional defense ... Can be foul prone from time to time ... Has problems getting the ball in the post as he doesn't always work to get good position ...

Excellent finisher in transition where he is able to make jaw dropping dunks ... Extremely long arms and explosiveness enable him to be a shot blocking force ...Mid range shooting has greatly improved to the point where he can make the 16 footer with some regularity ... Defensively he shows tremendous promise as he possesses leaping ability, quick hands, great lateral movement and very long arms ... Not a bad ball handler able to take the ball the length of the court ... Unselfish. Sees the floor well enough to recognize open teammates ...When he does post up he shows refined post footwork ... Due to his mobility Outlaw is a great help defender... Not a bad shooter off the dribble as he does a excellent job of keeping his body balanced ...

Weakness: Must gain some serious upper body strength and weight... Does play defense with full effort ... Too often Outlaw gives the impression that he is coasting ... Improvement in his back to the basket skills will really benefit him on mismatch opportunities ... Court awareness isn't fully develop as he doesn't fully understand the game yet... Rebounding will need to be upgraded ... Throughout his career he has relied on his jumping ability, now he must learn technique ... Lack of strength allows him to easily get boxed out... Not as effective of a player when playing within a half court set ...Perimeter shooting has greatly improved but remains inconsistent ... Must work on taking his defender off the dribble if he is to play small forward in the NBA ... Although not soft, Outlaw is not a big fan of physical contact... Shot selection can be questionable at times if he gets frustrated ... Needs to take the ball to the basket with more authority instead of settling for jumpers ... Moving without the ball is adequate but he needs to show he can play in a system ... Must work on becoming a better three point shooter ...

kyle-korver 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review new-jersey 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Top shooter in the college game ... Intelligent player who shows great court awareness ... Plays under control and every move on the floor is thought out... Although a great shooter he is a very capable passer... Does a nice job of recognizing open teammates on the fast break ... His solid court vision makes him a consistent threat to pass to cutters under the basket... When working off screens he needs little time to get his shot off thanks to his quick release ... Mechanics on his jumper enable him to shoot over most defenders as his height and high arc make him difficult to block ... A consistent threat behind the 3-point line ... Has the ability to make any shot off the floor if his feet are set or if he is running of screens ... Decent rebounder for a player at his position ... Excellent free throw shooter... Does a great job of shooting the ball quickly off handoffs ... Moves very well without the ball in hands when he is running off screens ... Despite his scoring prowess, Korver is a very unselfish player... Tremendous work ethic and hunger to become a better player... Confident player who doesn't shy away from the ball when the game is on the line ...

Weakness: At times Korver can become too infatuated with shooting the 3-point shot... Defensively he still has a ways to go as he doesn't always play with full effort and can get caught concentrating solely on offense ... Korver's average lateral quickness and foot speed makes it hard for him to defend quick and athletic players ... However the zone defense rule changes make him less of a liability ... Needs to gain weight and upper body strength to his average frame ... His stamina can improve with better conditioning ... Because of the fact he is so perimeter oriented with his offense he doesn't draw many fouls from his defender... Though he has a quick release, his ability to get shots off may cause him problems due to his lack of speed and quickness ... Ball handling is adequate but not where it will need to be in the NBA ... Despite his proficiency from the 3-point line he is not great shooting from mid-range off the dribble ... Somewhat one dimensional offesively and must work on taking defenders off the dribble and becoming more aggressive attacking the basket...

zoran-planinic 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review new-jersey 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Owns great size for a point guard ... Smart player who understands how to run an offense efficiently ... Has a quick release on his jumper ... Competent shooter from behind the 3-point line ... Defensively he shows quick hands and solid anticipation skills that enable him to play the passing lanes for steals ... Does a good job of pushing the ball up the court to initiate the fast break ... Possesses above average court vision ... Patient, calculated player who reads the defense before attacking ... Great ball handler who owns an excellent left to right crossover to get by defenders ... Effective passer who looks to dish the ball off when he breaks down the defense ... Really has become a great shooter off screens when working without the ball ... Above average first step enables him to drive with some regularity ... Selective shooter who will not force up anything he deems not a great shot ... Uses his body well to shield off his defender on the drive ... Makes solid decisions when the ball is in his hands ...

Weakness: Really needs to bulk up and add some upper body strength to his slight frame ... Athletically he isn't a possessor of great quickness or leaping ability ... Needs to become a better post passer when traffic is in the lane ... Offensively his mid-range shooting off the dribble is inconsistent at times ... Has a tendency to leave his feet too early and force passes that can result in turnovers ... Has some problems finishing after contact because of upper body strength ... The injuries that he suffered last year have disrupted his progression this year ... This could have some teams wondering if he will be injury prone ... Has some leadership skills but could stand to be more vocally assertive as a point guard ... Although a solid shooter Planinic isn't all that great when it comes to making free throws ... Because he drives to the basket so aggressively he tends to get out of control ...

pacellis-morlende 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review philadelphia 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Extremely athletic guard who possesses great quickness and leaping ability ... Shows great body control to contort his body in the lane to finish ... Really looks to push the fast break when he gets the ball... Despite his height and the fact that he is often out of position, Morlende is a solid rebounder... Great free throw shooter... When playing perimeter defense he shows above average lateral movement to stay with most players ... Has decent but still evolving court vision to see most players on the court ... Vocal floor general who shows solid command of the floor... Really understands how to attack the defense and draw double teams for the dish to open teammates ... Possesses a great first step enabling separation from his defender... Has 3-point range on his jumper off the dribble ... Tough minded player who isn't intimidated by physical contact ...Can be quite creative in the open court where he can make some flashy plays .. Has a well rounded basketball IQ that continues to develop with time ... Unselfish, really looks to set-up teammates first... Aggressive driver who can draw a number of fouls from his defender... Not a bad decision maker when leading the fast break as he can dish off or finish with no difficulty ...

Weakness: Morlende is still mentally a shooting guard ... Although he has greatly improved on some aspects, there are a few that need refinement... Like most young point guards he still needs to learn how to control the tempo of a game ... Has a bad habit of getting careless with the ball on his penetrations ... Doesn't always play defense with great intensity or effort... Remains an inconsistent shooter from mid-range especially when he has to pull-up off the dribble ... Tends to leave his feet too early and make risky passes before his teammates are ready ... Doesn't always play under control as he can be a target for offensive charges on his drives ... For a guard he doesn't consistently move without the ball too often as he will just stand and watch ... Confidence in his game can lessen if he starts out shaky ... Defensively he needs to put his quick hands to good use by playing the passing lanes better...
