mickael-pietrus 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review goldenst 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Athletically he is an explosive leaper capable of creating some impressive dunks ... Defensively he shows above average lateral quickness and long arms to disrupt passing lanes ... Owns a nice hesitation move to gain separation from his defender on drives ... Wonderful finisher in transition where he makes full use of his athletic ability in the open court ... Plays defense with passion and intensity ... Because of his athleticism he does a good job of crashing the glass for rebounds ... When slashing to the lane Pietrus understands how to draw fouls ... Shows 3-point range on his jumper ... Solid post passer... Possess excellent body control to adjust his shot in mid-air... On defense he does a good job of using his quick hands to pressure the ball handler into a turnover ... Is a legitimate threat when moving without the ball on lay-ups or alley-oops ... Creative scorer who can be a hard player to defend when he is on top of his game ... Long arms and Leaping ability make it very hard for opposing players to pass over his head ...

Weakness: Could stand to add a tad bit more upper body strength to his physique ... Not a super shooter from the perimeter especially behind the three point line where he is inconsistent ... Can be a little too flashy for his own good and play out of control ... Needs to improve on shooting off the dribble from mid-range ... Doesn't always drive to the basket as he can settle for the jumper ... Fundamentally he shows a good grasp of the basic's but he still needs further mental development in terms of thinking the game ... Shot selection is a work in progress as he has a habit of forcing things offensively ... Ball handling has improved but could still stand refinement ... His on the court performance still goes through periods of inconsistency ... Some have questioned his maturity but to his credit he has worked on making this less of an issue ... Can be a little too aggressive on defense leading him to pick-up quick fouls ...

jarvis-hayes 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review washington 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Quick first step enables him to gain solid separation from his defender... Might be the best player in the nation when it comes to moving without the ball... Unlike many young players Hayes is an wonderful mid-range shooter... Patient scorer who doesn't force many shots that are not there ... Above average athleticism allows him to be a solid finisher in transition ... Smart player who has a great feel for the game ... His game savvy enables him to recognize mismatches and use his height to his advantage ... Effectively uses screens and quick catches to gain good shot opportunities ... Unselfish player who doesn't demand the ball on every possession ... Has legit three point range on his jumper... When slashing to the basket he has the body control and strength to finish after contact... Plays with a lot of poise as he is not one to play out of control... Offensively he has the ability to take over a game with his shooting ... Can make some difficult shots no matter the defensive pressure ...

Weakness: Offensively Hayes needs to really focus on taking opposing defenders off the dribble ... Just an average passer at this point... Improved court vision would better aid him when it comes to creating scoring opportunities for his teammates ... Remains an average defender despite his quickness due to lack of intensity ... Could stand to work on expanding his post skills to become more efficient on mismatches ... Fails to recognize double teams ... Lacks the ball handling ability to consistently take opposing defenders to the basket on isolation plays ... Tends to be a little turnover prone as he can get careless with the ball... Settles too much for the perimeter jumper... Doesn't do a good job of drawing fouls ... Despite his athleticism he is not the rebounder one should be at his college position of small forward ... Would benefit if he was to use a couple pump fakes to bait defenders into jumping into him on shots ala Reggie Miller... Defensively he has to learn how to play the passing lanes better to gain easy steals ...

steve-blake 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review washington 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Defensively Blake shows quick hands and great anticipation skills to disrupt passing lanes for steals ... His superior court vision allows him to see the floor like few can ... When his feet are set he is a solid 3-point shooter... Has a lot of qualities you look for in a point guard: leadership, intelligence, poise and a solid grasp of the fundamentals ... Above average ball handler who does a great job of protecting the ball... Solid free throw shooter... Although he isn't the quickest player Blake makes up for it with his savvy and intensity ... Gym rat who possess a solid work ethic to improve ... Controls the tempo of a game like few can at his position ... Does a great job of getting teammates involved in the offense with his distribution ... Rebounds well for a point guard due to his decently long arms and toughness ... Mid-range shooting has become more consistent this past year... One of those players who does more than the numbers indicate ...

Weakness: Defensively Blake's average lateral quickness tends to hurt him when having to defend quicker guards ... Offensively he has problems creating scoring opportunities for himself... To compound matters he isn't all that great of a penetrator... This is due to his lack of explosiveness which doesn't allow for him to gain good separation from his defender... Still isn't all that great when having to shoot off the dribble from mid-range ... Will need to clean up his shooting mechanics on his jump shot as his release isn't fluid ... Still not all that comfortable when having to shoulder some of scoring load ... His lack of athleticism could catch up with him in the NBA ... Will need to develop more upper body strength and weight to his physique ... Tends to force passes that aren't there which can lead to turnovers ...

mike-sweetney 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review new-york 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Really works hard to establish good position on the blocks ... Has extremely soft hands to catch most passes thrown into the post without bobbling them ... Possesses excellent post footwork to maneuver around the basket... Super back to the basket player with highly advanced low post moves ... Such as the up and under, jump hook, spin move and the slightly used turnaround jumper ... Mobility and footwork make it extremely hard for the defense to get a read on what move to expect ... Shows soft touch around the basket as he converts on a high number of lay-in's and tip-in's ... Does a great job of keeping the ball up high after receiving it ... Has developed his defensive timing which is why he has become more of a shot blocking force this past season ... Above average lateral movement for a player with his size ...Physical low post game can really draw fouls from the opposing defense ... Body strength gives him the ability to finish after contact occurs ... Great post passer who recognizes cutters and spot up shooters ... Excellent rebounder who understands how to use his body and long arms to gain rebounds out of position ... Shows a great work ethic seen in his continual weight loss of the past two seasons ... Above average runner of the court although he is no speedster ...

Weakness: Sweetney will need to expand his shooting range out to 16 feet from the basket... Doesn't seem comfortable facing the basket as he does with his back to it ... Height could turn out to be a slight issue at 6-8, Sweetney will be somewhat undersized in the NBA ... Will have to work on getting himself in better shape by toning up his body and improving his overall stamina ... Double teams can frustrate him into shooting Ill-advised shots ... Not what one would call an impressive athlete because of his lack of explosiveness ... Ball handling from the perimeter remains underused as he doesn't take many defenders off the dribble ... Will need to brush up on his post defense as he can be a little foul prone ... Although he has developed into a shot blocking presence his height and leaping ability could limit him from doing this to an extent in the NBA ...

travis-hansen 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review atlanta 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: An underrated athlete capable of making some impressive dunks in transition ... Has really worked on becoming a more consistent mid-range shooter... Above average perimeter defender... Hansen does a great job of staying in front his man ... Extremely mature player who brings a certain level of professionalism ... A gym rat who possesses the work ethic to improve ... Can create scoring opportunities off the dribble from the perimeter... When slashing to the basket he has the body strength needed to absorb contact and finish ... Athleticism enables him to gain a decent amount of rebounds despite often being out of position ... Has 3-point range on his shot to keep defenders from guarding his drive ... Does a wonderful job of shielding his defender with his body on his drives to the basket... Shows the competitiveness and toughness that coaches love and wont back down from anyone ... Defensively Hansen plays with an extraordinary level of intensity ... Has a solid understanding of the game in terms knowledge and fundamentals ... Ball handling has steadily improved to the point where he is now a threat to take his defender off the dribble ...

Weakness: Needs to continue to hone his perimeter jumper as it still goes through periods of streakiness ... Age could be a concern for some teams at 25 he will be viewed as a prospect with marginal potential... His high intensity level that he plays with can get him into foul trouble on defense due to over aggressiveness ... Needs to work on playing the passing lanes better to gain steals ... Ball handling while improved is still in need of refinement as he can be turnover prone at times ... Could stand to improve on his lateral quickness defensively ... Court vision is still a work in progress as he doesn't always look to set-up defenses ... Shot selection is questionable at times when the lane is congested ... Although a smart player Hansen needs to make better on the court decisions as he can play out of control at times ... Tends to let his emotions get the best of him ... While he has 3-point range he needs to develop better consistency ...

kirk-hinrich 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review chicago 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Has a tremendous understanding of the games fundamentals ... Excellent three point shooter off the dribble or when his feet are set... Possess above average court vision capable of recognizing most teammates on the floor... Shows great change of direction speed to get past defenders on fast break opportunities ... Extremely aggressive in transition where he is a great finisher... Understands how to shield off his body from the defender... Hustler who will dive on the floor for loose balls ... Great post passer... Solid controller of the tempo of a game ... Defensively Hinrich has the savvy to play the passing lanes for easy steals ... Owns great size for a point guard at 6-3 ... Doesn't force many shots in the lane as he will usually dish off to an open teammate ... Looks to push the ball up the floor on every possession ... Really works hard to track down long rebounds ... Clutch player who wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line ... Is able to shot consistently off the dribble from mid-range ... Has developed into a solid shooter when running off screens ...

Weakness: Upper body strength will need to be improved as the NBA will be more physically imposing than college ... Athletically he is adequate but doesn't have the best lateral quickness to guard athletic point guards ... Has a habit of sometimes getting too carried away from shooting behind the three point line ... Doesn't do a great job of penetrating to the basket when his team is in a half court set... This can be improved if he work on getting a quicker first step ... Doesn't always finish after contact is made ... Prone to picking up fouls when he has to match up defensively with an athletic player... Ball protection is improved but still a little prone to turnovers ... Toughness has come under fire thanks to some of his early season performances ... Still learning how to create for himself off the dribble on isolation plays ... Settles too much for the jumper which could be due to his lack of penetration skills ...

chris-kaman 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review clippers 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Solid athlete who runs of the court well and is an above average leaper... Post footwork is superb for a player his age and could be the best in college among NBA center prospects ... Has a nice assortment of low post moves when his back is to the basket... Uncommon for most big men Kaman is capable of finishing around the basket with either hand ... Tough kid who enjoys physical contact in the lane ... For his position he is a very good free throw shooter... Shows soft touch on his turnaround jumper... Understands how to utilize the glass on his hook shot in the lane ... Extremely aggressive when it comes to getting position on the blocks ... Does a good job of keeping the ball high after receiving it... Because of his aggressive play he draws a good number of fouls from his defender... Decent shot blocker who uses his above average leaping ability and long arms ... Not a bad post passer out to the perimeter even when being constantly double teamed ... Solid rebounder due to his level of athleticism and hustle ... Offensively he shows great shot selection as he doesn't try to stray from his strengths ...

Weakness: Needs to add more upper body strength to aid him in the post... Defensively he will have to work on playing better positional post defense as he relies on shot blocking ability a little too much ... Level of competition will be a question mark but to his credit he has shown that he can play with the big boys ... Could stand to expand his shooting range out to 15-16 feet from the basket... Doesn't always get his body wide enough when establishing himself in the lane ... This can at times effect the guards from getting him the ball effectively ... Double teams can trouble him when he fails to recognize them quickly ... Can at times be a little overaggressive and pick up cheap fouls ... Will need to work on his rebounding fundamentals such as boxing out... Needs to improve on rebounding out of position more effectively ... Although he shows great timing on his blocks, he tends to bite on pump fakes from time to time ... Will need to improve his stamina with added conditioning ... Could stand to gain 15-20 pounds of muscle to his body ...

Smart defender who will often allow his man to front him once the pass is made and has enough quickness to quickly jump in front for the steal ... Owns a solid work ethicand has the desire to be great not just good ...

Weakness: Has a bad habit of picking up quick fouls due to over aggressiveness when guarding his man ... Needs to work on recognizing double teams better as he is often slow to react to them ... Fundamentally he is a little behind in his development as he has had to play out of position for his team ... Offensively he still has a tendency to rely too much on his back to the basket power game instead of concentrating on face up skills ... Height is inflated, although Shortsianitis is listed by "some" at 6-11, he looks to be between 6-8 Vz to 6-9 Vz ... Despite his ability to draw contact in the lane, his below average free throw shooting inhibits him from taking full advantage of his opportunities ... While he has range on his jumper, he lacks consistency ... Tends to put the ball on the floor rather than immediately going up with the ball after receiving it in the post... Although a solid rebounder he is still learning how to get rebounds out of position although with added game experience this should be less of an issue ... Defensively he is not a great shot blocker as he is still learning defensive footwork and timing...

chris-bosh 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review toronto 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: For his size he is able to run the floor with great speed ... Shows a very soft touch on jump hooks and lay-in's ... Possess great foot speed and lateral quickness to maneuver around the lane ... Possess all the natural instincts to be a shot blocker... Has a nice 10 foot turnaround jumper he can make despite heavy defensive pressure ... When posting up Bosh does a great job of getting himself wide in the post... Can take his defender 17 feet out and sink the mid-range jumper... Not a bad 3-po/nt shooter for his size... Keeps ball high when receiving it in the post... Finishes extremely well around the basket where he can dunk with flair... Smart kid who looks to have a great handle on the fundamental aspects of basket... For his age he shows great timing on his blocks as he doesn't bite on a lot of pump fakes ... Owns a pair of soft hands that allow him to catch most passes thrown into the post with ease ... His athleticism and agility enable him to make some very difficult shots around the basket... Mobility allows for him to be a great help defender if one of his teammates get beat... Not a bad ball handler for his size and position ... Does a good job of kicking the ball back out when the defense collapses...

Weakness: Needs to concentrate on gaining more weight and upper body strength ... Because of his lack of upper body strength Bosh tends to get pushed off the blocks ... Shot selection is solid but he is still figuring out what his strengths are offensively ... Back to the basket skills are in the developmental stages ... Can sometimes rush himself in the execution of his offense ... Like most young players he still has a tendency to put the ball on the floor after receiving it in the low post... Should work on keeping the ball high to limit turnovers caused by guards doubling down ... Struggles at times to consistently make the mid-range jumper... Ball handling and better ball protection need to be worked on as he can be a little turnover prone ... Doesn't always create enough contact in the post to draw fouls ... Needs to be better conditioned this would greatly improve his stamina ...Has some problems finishing after contact occurs ... Gets out of rebounding position at times due to his habit of trying to block every shot... Can coast through games rarely showing intensity or mental focus ... Post footwork is still a work in progress as he can move a little awkward at times ...

jerome-beasley 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review miami 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Does a great job on establishing position on the blocks ... Owns a nice turnaround jumper that he can make from 10-14 feet out with regularity ... Shows above average post footwork when maneuvering around the lane ... Mobile player able to run the court with some speed ... When receiving the ball in the post he uses a quick spin move to gain separation for the dunk or lay-up ... Has extremely soft touch around the basket... Solid finisher who understands how to use his body to shield off defenders ... Emotional player who plays the game with enthusiasm ... Doesn't need much time to execute his offense from the perimeter... Has shown the ability to catch and shoot from 18 feet... With his soft hands and ability to keep his body wide in the post he is able to catch most passes ... Makes great use of the glass when facing the basket... Has 3-point range on his jumper... Defensively Beasley shows above average lateral movement... Shows a solid hook shot when he turns into the lane ...

Weakness: Has to work on his rebounding fundamentals such as boxing out better under the basket... Could stand to tone his body which looks as though he is carrying a little baby fat... Not an extreme athlete by any means as he has average quickness and leaping ability ... Back to the basket moves are in need of improvement like a drop step and an up and under... Settles to shoot from the perimeter a little too much instead of backing defenders down in the low post... Defensively his post defense will need to be improved ... Lacks the leaping ability to be a shot blocker at the NBA level... Not a great rebounder when it comes to rebounding out of position ... Level of competition will raise some concerns with NBA GM's as he hasn't played against great big men ... Shot selection can be inconsistent at times ... While not a bona fide tweener Beasley is still figuring out what position will maximize his skill Is ...

carmelo-anthony 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review denver93-03 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Fluid player who shows great athleticism despite not having overly explosive leaping ability ... Possesses a quick first step which helps him gain separation from his defender to set-up his drive to the basket... Excellent slasher, once he gets to the basket he has the creativity to make spectacular plays due to his cat like body control... Solid rebounder thanks to his long arms and hustle ... Has range on his jump shot as he can shoot from mid-range or behind the 3-point line ... Has a innate feel for the game that most players have to develop ... Has the dribbling ability to breakdown most defenders on the perimeter... Worked hard over the past two years to develop his upper body strength which shows his commitment to making himself better... When leading or trailing the break Anthony is a excellent finisher in transition ... Has started to refine his low post moves ... Seems to show a knack for drawing fouls on his forays to the basket... Has the tools to be a solid passer due to his ability to see the floor...

Weakness: Defensively he needs to improve on his perimeter defense such as lateral quickness and footwork ... Anthony at times can be such an dominate scorer that he can freeze teammates out of a game ... So getting his teammates involved in the offense should be worked on ... Shot selection can improve. Like most young players he has a tendency to throw up questionable attempts ... Still learning how to mix up his game offensively as too often he can settle for the jumper instead of driving into the lane ... Ball handling is adequate but his ball protection will need a slight upgrade as turnovers can trouble him ... Mid range shooting can go through periods of inconsistency... Must improve his decision making on the court as he can get a little to flashy for his own good ... Although he has shot the ball well from behind the 3-point line he still needs to work on his jumper... Still improving his decision making on the court but with added experience that should become less of an issue ...
