2003 NBA Draft

jason-kapono 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review cleveland94-04 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Intelligent basketball player who has a great understanding of the ins and outs of the game from a fundamental standpoint... Decent ball handler who has no problem leading the break ... One of the best shooters in the entire country. He can spot up behind the 3-point line or hit the mid-range shot with a pull-up jumper... Good passer who is blessed with solid court vision ... Does a really good job at hitting the open jump shot from the perimeter when his feet are set... Moves well without the ball and most importantly knows how to utilize screens to get open looks ... Has become better at creating scoring opportunities for himself and no longer has to rely on a setup man... Excellent free throw shooter capable of making high pressure free throws...

Weakness: Defensively he will have trouble guarding the athletic players in the NBA due to his average athleticism and lack of lateral quickness ... Needs to work on better ball protection as he can be turnover prone at times ... Doesn't have the best upper body strength although this is certainly improving ... Not much of a leaper which can work against him in the area of rebounding ... Defensive instincts need to be learned such as anticipation, and defensive footwork although to his credit this has improved ... Sometimes he focuses solely on scoring instead of setting up his teammates ... Doesn't drive to the basket all that much as he has problems gaining separation from his defender...

darko-milicic 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review detroit96-04 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Solid athlete who can run the floor and jump like few others his size ... Creative scorer who understands how to set-up his defender off the dribble ... Excellent finisher when receiving the ball on the break or out on the perimeter as he can cut to the lane and even dunk in traffic ... On defense he is an excellent help defender who shows promise of being an adequate shot-blocker... Does a very good job of using his long arms to grab most rebounds around his area despite usually being physically out-matched by his opponents ... Can be a nightmare for opposing players to defend due to his versatility as he is too quick for most power forwards and too tall for most small forwards to defend in the post... Excellent ball handler for his size ... Plays extremely aggressive and wont back down from a challenge ... Competitive, he'll do whatever it takes to win ... Shows court awareness beyond his years as he will adjust his game according to how the defense plays him ... Can shoot the ball from 20 feet with consistency and even has the ability to extend out to the three point line ... Has a very high basketball IQ and sees plays before they occur... Good passer who is blessed with solid court vision. Double teams rarely bother him ... Shows soft touch around the basket... Owns a solid hesitation dribble move he uses to bait his defender out of the paint. As soon as his defender plays his shot, Milicic will dribble into the lane for the quick lay-up ...

Weakness: Has problems at times holding his position on the low blocks due to his lack of body strength ... Offensively his back to the basket skills are still in the developmental stages as he prefers to face the basket... Needs to continue to improve his upper body strength although this should be no surprise when you consider his age ... Unlike most young players defensively he shows above average skills but it's the basic stuff he'll need to improve on ... Perimeter defensive skills such as anticipation and playing the passing lanes ... As far as working on his low post defense, strength and experience are the main detracting factors ... Tends to put the ball on the floor a little too much after getting an offensive rebound ... Ball protection is a area of concern as he can get careless at times ... Needs to work on getting rebounds out of position ... When posting up Milicic should improve on getting wider so he can give guards a bigger target when they pass into the post...

maciej-lampe 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review new-york 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Shows advanced offensive moves when you consider his age ... Lampe likes to fake his defender into thinking it will be a post up move then shoot the turnaround jumper from 16 feet... For his size he is a extremely mobile around the basket and a great runner of the floor... Fundamentally he is very sound and intelligent... Possesses legitimate 3-point range on his jumper... When getting the offensive board or quick pass around the basket Lampe does a great job of not putting the ball on the floor... Height combined with long arms enables him to shoot over most defenders ... Solid hands and soft touch make him an excellent finisher around the basket or on the fast break ... When facing the basket Lampe understands how to utilize the glass to get his shot off on tough angles ... Has the ball handling ability to take his defender off the dribble or to lead the fast break ... Constantly creates mismatches with his ability to shoot from the perimeter or go down low to post up ... Above average passer blessed with solid court vision for a player his size and age ... Does a great job of seeing double teams before the occur... Has loads of potential for his size and ability ... Possesses the desire and work ethic to improve ... Displays a solid mid-range jumper that he can make 18 feet from the basket...

Weakness: Will need to improve on his lateral quickness defensively if he is to play small forward ... Needs to add more weight and upper body strength to his physique ... This improved body strength would benefit him greatly when it comes to getting position on the low blocks ... Athletically he isn't much of a leaper as his lacks explosiveness ... This is one of the reasons despite his long arms why he isn't much of a shot blocking threat... Needs to improve on being a better out of position rebounder... Still learning how to be fully efficient offensively through understanding how to fully blend his inside/outside game ... Perimeter shooting like most young players can go through periods of inconsistency ... Shot selection isn't poor but will need to be refined as he can be too perimeter oriented ... Some have questioned his mental toughness mainly because of the lack of aggressiveness he plays with ... Post defense is still a work in progress ... Because of his doesn't have the necessary body strength to deny position ... Might take a little time before he can make a major impact in the NBA ... Any team drafting him can't expect immediate help ...

lebron-james 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review cleveland94-04 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Smooth player who makes things look effortless no matter how difficult... Shows unbelievable ability when it comes to passing the ball. Simply has that uncanny court vision and knack for seeing plays develop before they occur... Possesses very good motion on his long range jumper as he does an excellent job of keeping his body square and his shooting with his elbow tucked in ... Owns a quick first step and solid ball handling ability to get past most defenders ... When penetrating to the basket, he shows tremendous body control as he can adjust his shot according to the defense ... Shows remarkable shot selection as he doesn't force too many shots ... Solid rebounder who understands how to position himself well under the boards to gain easy rebounding opportunities ... Shows great poise and leadership on the court... Has a very good body, although not NBA ready. James definitely can put on 10-15 more pounds quite comfortably ... Excellent finisher when running the break where he can take opponents off the dribble and rise up for the quick dunk ... Defensively he shows solid anticipation skills when playing the passing lanes ... Plays the baseline very well where he is often the recipient of a quick pass for the alley-oop dunk ...

Weakness: At this point in his career his defense isn't the best but he does have the physical tools to be an outstanding defender... Has a bad habit of overplaying his man for the quick steal which can leave his player open for the easy shot... Struggles on the free throw line, however getting a free throw routine and experience would be of great benefit to him, plus establishing a sharper mental focus ... His ball handling ability is very good at the high school level, however he still needs work on maintaining better ball protection and has a tendency to get careless ... Perimeter shooting from mid-range isn't as developed as his long-range shooting ... Doesn't exploit his body size enough as his post-up game offensively remains unutilized ... Sometimes he can be a little too flashy at times as he gets caught up in the moment... His shooting off the dribble leaves a little to be desired from 18 feet out... Some have questioned if he has bought into all the hype about himself but to his credit it takes a certain level of brashness to handle it all ... Not a blindingly quick player so lateral quickness on defense should be worked on ...
