randy-holcomb 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review san-antonio89-04 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Athletic player who runs the floor well and is a decent leaper ... Offensively Holcomb is very comfortable facing the basket where he has the ability to shoot from 20 feet from the perimeter and is a threat to hit the 3-point shot ... Has developed into a solid rebounder due to his athletic ability and long arms ... Ball handling is above average for a player his size because of this he is capable of slashing to the basket ... Left handed which is a advantage that he has over most defenders in that many player are use to guarding right handed players ... Does a decently good job of drawing fouls when he is around the basket ... Has improved his shot selection greatly something that has hampered him in the past ... Plays with a no nonsense attitude and will not back down from anybody ... Decent finisher in transition due to his quick leaping ability ... Does a good job of putting the ball right back up on put-backs ...

Weakness: Needs to become a consistent shooter from the outside as his 3-point shot remains streaky at best ... Sometimes he tries to do too much which can lead to costly turnovers ... Upper body strength should be worked while not bad he could use 10-15 pounds of muscle ... Can go through periods where his focus wanders ... Right hand remains suspect as he doesn’t use it as much as he could ... Isn’t very comfortable with his back to the basket offensively so it wouldn’t hurt if he improved his post up moves ... Needs to be more aggressive from an offensive standpoint and call for the ball more ... Doesn’t let the game come to him which can lead him into rushing shots ...

dan-dickau 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review sacramento 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Gym rat who is always working on his game … Real nice as a spot up shooter from the outside and has improved this season shooting off dribble … Dickau while not explosively quick is very deceptive with the ball and often he will utilize his teammates by setting up picks or screens to get past defenders … When driving to the basket he has no problem making hard shots as he will use the glass when there is traffic in the lane … Has mental qualities that great point guards have such as savvy, court awareness, creativity and court vision … Always pushes the ball up court in effort to try and start the fastbreak … Unselfish as he always looks for open teammates … Despite handling the ball for the majority of time he rarely turns the ball over as he makes excellent court decisions … Good passer has no problem making nice feeds in the low post or quick passes to spot up perimeter players … Good ball handler as he owns a semi-quick first step and uses a nice change of speed dribble to get pass defenders … Moves well without the ball and has become very adapt at catching and shooting …

Weakness: Defense could be Dickau’s biggest weakness as he struggles defending quick guards due to his average lateral quickness … Shot selection leaves a little to be desired as he will sometimes come down the court and pull-up a jumper before the offense is initiated ... Doesn’t always use his great penetration skills when he should as sometimes he is just satisfied to shoot from the outside when it would benefit him more to drive … Has a bad habit of playing defense with his hands and not his feet so it is a must that he works on his defensive footwork to compensate for his average lateral quickness … Doesn’t always control the tempo of the game when he gets into his scoring mode …

luis-scola 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review san-antonio89-04 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Hustler gives a 100 percent every time he steps out on the court … Owns a variety of ways to score as he can literally take opposing defense's inside or out … Has a nice touch around the basket where he converts a high percentage of his shots … Surprisingly strong offensive rebounder as he is a hard worker and is decently athletic as he posses good leaping ability … Facing the basket he is dangerous as he can shoot consistently from 16 feet and in … Runs the court well and with some speed so he shouldn’t have any problems keeping up on the break … Has big time game experience as he is playing in one of Europe’s most prominent and competitive leagues … Defensively he has shown the ability to be a adequate shot-blocker … Comfortable with his back to the basket as he has a solid post footwork and uses a nice jump-hook or spin moves to score easily on his defender …

Weakness: Defense is one of his main detractions as he isn’t a very good defender … This could be because of his below average lateral quickness and he isn’t the most mobile player … Isn’t a super rebounder often because he is out of position and not because of effort … Although he is good at drawing fouls surprisingly he isn’t a solid free throw shooter … Not much of a passer which sometimes leads him to commit a decent amount of turnovers … Plays very mechanical as he comes across stiff almost like he just goes through the motions on offense … Should try to extend his shooting range out to 19 feet from the perimeter …

john-salmons 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review san-antonio89-04 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Due to his size and skills Salmons is capable proving mismatches almost every game … Extremely versatile player who has played every position but center during his four years at Miami … Plays the game with a calm composed demeanor rarely does he play out of control … Smart player who constantly moves around the basket to set up his low post game as he understands how to use his height on his mismatches … Although not the quickest player he is very deceptive with the ball due to his nice breakdown ability … Wonderful rebounder who enjoys crashing the boards … For his size he is a excellent ball handler and passer often Miami would run plays through him … Team player who understands what is role is in a team concept and rarely tries to exceed it … Above average defender who is blessed with quick hands and decent anticipation skills … Does a good job of drawling fouls when he gets in the lane … Has the court vision and leadership abilities that are needed of point guards …

Weakness: While he has the ability to play point guard he might lack the quickness needed to defend the position … At this moment he is a average 3-point shooter often defenders were able to play off him for the drive … Has some problems getting separation from his defender as he is more deceptive than quick … Isn’t much of a athlete for his size due to his average jumping ability and lack of explosiveness … Salmons could struggle getting his shot off in the NBA … Ball protection could use some improvement as he can be a little turnover prone … Hasn’t fully mastered the point guard position so in reality he is really a combo guard … Doesn’t have a solid mid-range jumper and at time struggles shooting off the dribble … Salmons has loads of things he does decent problem is he really doesn’t do anything spectacular … Could stand to add about 15 more pounds of weight to his body …

tamar-slay 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review new-jersey 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Athletic at 6-9 he is very quick for his size … Good ball handler as he can take most opposing defenders off the dribble … Has 3-point range on his jumpshot if you leave him open he is capable of draining it … Explosive scorer in that if he gets hot he can single handedly beat you … Contributes on the boards as his long arms and height help him snag rebounds … Creates mismatches as he is often taller than most opposing guards and quicker than most forwards … Great size as he will be able to shoot over most defenders … Is a good enough ball handler to bring the ball up the court to lead the break … Unlike many small school phenoms Slay isn’t afraid of the high tier schools as Kentucky can bare witness too this season when he dropped 26 points and 10 rebounds … A good finisher in transition as he has no problem running on the break and is athletic enough to score in a variety of ways …

Weakness: Has fallen in love with shooting from the outside as he relies way too much on the 3-point shot … Not much of a passer as he is somewhat of a gunner in that he will throw up any shot that he gets … Defense is below average seems to focus all his energies into scoring … Shot selection not the best as many times he just seems to force up shots … Could really use 10-15 pounds of upper body strength which would benefit him greatly … Although generally taller than his defender he rarely takes advantage of the mismatch preferring to shoot from the perimeter instead of posting up … Hasn’t really shown the type of consistency that being a star player demands as one game he’ll drop 20 plus and the next he scores 12 … Not the strongest shooter from the mid-range perimeter …

frank-williams 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review denver93-03 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Does an excellent job at keeping his head up and has no problem firing passes down the court before opposing defenses can get set … Has what many coaches want in a point guard attitude, leadership and toughness … Good defender possess wonderful defensive footwork, long arms, and quick hands that can give opposing players fits … The term clutch player is sometimes thrown around loosely but with Williams there is no other word then that when describing how he almost always seems to come out on top when the chips are down … Can create his own shot due to his quick first step and good dribbling ability making it very hard for defenders to stay in front of him and stop his penetration … Does a good job at creating contact when going to the basket … Has a great grasp of the game in terms of knowledge he knows everything that is taking place on the court and knows where all his teammates are on the floor … Can hit the 18 foot jumper on a somewhat consistent basis … Has good size for a point guard and has good upper body strength to match ...

Weakness: Needs to work mainly on his jumper which still remains streaky at best … Still goes through periods where he focuses more on scoring than setting up teammates … Has a habit of sometimes over dribbling the ball often this leads him to play out of control it’s almost like he gets caught up in the moment … Shot selection leaves a lot to be desired while not a gunner he certainty shoots questionable shots … While he has 3-point range, he doesn’t hit it with any type of consistency so this is a area that needs improvement although to Williams credit he has been slowed this year by a sore wrist that he suffered over the summer ...

tayshaun-prince 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review detroit96-04 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Super long arms help him to make hard shots when going to the basket and once there he has no problems switching hands for the lay-up ... Has a nice scoring touch around the basket ... Because of his height, Prince is able to shoot over most defenders ... Quick first step to the basket smooth but not explosive ... Athletic player runs the court well and is a very good finisher in traffic ... Excellent free throw shooter ... Good passer sees the floor well this makes him a very difficult player to double-team ... Leadership skills have really blossomed since entering the program in 98 ... Good spot up three-point shooter and can get hot in a hurry ... Has some of the physical skills to be a top notch defender as of right now Prince is good just not as good as he could be ... Can consistently make the 16-foot jumper ... Good but not great rebounder ...

Weakness: Has a bad habit like most young players of being inconsistent doesn’t consistently bring his "A game" every game ... Really could stand to add about 20 pounds of muscle and work on gaining more upper body strength although Tayshaun has really concentrated on that aspect this past off-season ... Still working on becoming a better shooter off the dribble as of right now he’s more of a spot up shooter ... Has a very slow release on his jumper due to his mechanics that are far from being perfect ... Never really used his size to take advantage of his usual smaller defender ... Low post moves are almost non existent ... Not what one would call a legitimate threat from 3-point land ...Still learning how to become a better decision-maker ... Doesn’t have the best lateral quickness so defensively he might have problems…... Although he has had a great career at Kentucky he really didn’t blow-up till last year when he switched from small forward to power forward where he was able to create mismatches so one has to wonder if he will be able to play the three spot in the NBA …

casey-jacobsen 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review phoenix 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Tremendous shooter who can really dominate a game from the 3-point shot ... Loves to set-up opposing defenders by getting in the triple threat position once the if defender commits to play him a certain way he adjusts his offense accordingly ... Although primarily a perimeter player Jacobsen has the ability to penetrate in the lane and finish with an assortment of moves ... Competitive and very confident always wants the ball in his hand with the game on the line ... Simply has one of the best looking shooting mechanics of any college player picture perfect ... Owns a decently quick crossover when penetrating once in the lane Jacobsen has the ability to draw fouls ... Knowledgeable has a great understanding of the game in terms of knowing the fundamental aspects of the game ... Team player who is very unselfish looks for open teammates to pass too ... Has a great work ethic and most importantly he truly loves the game ... Proficient scorer who can score 20 a game with his eyes closed and has shown more leadership this year despite losing 4 out of 5 starters …

Weakness: At this point Jacobsen is not a very good defender lacks the quickness to keep up with quicker players ... Athleticism is kind of limited isn’t explosive or a possessor of great leaping ability so there is some concern if he will be able to get his shoot off in the NBA … Jacobsen throughout his college career has always had one thing a talented big man ( The Collins Twins & Borchardt) which have helped him get his shot off as those players needed double teams … Not the most consistent mid-range shooter although this might be due the fact that he concentrates the majority of his game from behind the line ... Although not bad he is a below average rebounder because of his leaping ability ... Still needs to work on his stamina as his jumper tends to go flat later in the game …

qyntel-woods 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review portland 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Sets up his defender by getting in the three point stance which enables Woods to be a threat to pass, shoot, or drive thus keeping the defender off balanced as to what he will do … Possess excellent body control as he can contort his body in the lane to get off shots … Fluid athlete makes a lot of things look effortless … Utilizes the baseline well as he can dribble and shoot or glide in for the lay-up … Good rebounder due to his long arms and quick leaping … In the open court he can run the floor like a gazelle and is a solid finisher on the break … For his size he is a excellent ball handler capable of driving past most defenders and he is armed with a decently quick first step … Explosive scorer who can reel off a great number of points in a hurry … Has 3-point range on his shot … Usually after breaking down a defender he will pull-up off the dribble and shoot the 16 ft. jumper … Has a good comprehension of where he is in relation to the basket when receiving the ball on lobs or alley-oops … Although his numbers don’t reflect it he is a good passer who has terrific court vision … Has the ability to shoot short fadaways when posting up his defender … Possess quick hands on defense capable of grabbing easy steals … Creative driver in the lane as he has the ability to adjust his shot in the air according to how the defense reacts to him …

Weakness: Shot selection could stand some improvement in that he seems to think every shot is a good shot … Woods needs to work on defense as he doesn’t show much focus or technique although to his credit this is a stigma with most junior college players … While he has the ability to drive Woods seems content to settle for way too many outside shots instead of driving in the lane … Could stand to work on better ball protection as he has a habit to get careless with the ball … While he possess 3-point range on his jumper he must focus on gaining more consistency with the shot … Seems to prefer having the ball in his hands to create offense rather than moving without the ball so off the ball movement is below average at this moment and should be worked on … Improvement on his upper body strength would benefit him with finishing better after contact occurs … Still learning how to evolve teammates better on offense as many just sit back and watch the show … Has yet to make consistently good decisions with ball as he can be a little turnover prone … Some have questioned his maturity level from a mental standpoint …
