kareem-rush 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review toronto 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

roots 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft ReviewBrothers: Jaron RushBrandon Rush

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: This Left-handed shooter is a smooth player who runs the court effortless and is an excellent finisher in the open court ... Owns a nice stroke from behind the 3-point line where he can keep opposing defenses honest ... Dominant offensive player who can drop 30 plus points in a game without sweating .... Good rebounder with long arms and leaping ability to help grab board ... Has wonderful body control for a player his size due to this he is capable of shooting off balance jumpers and lean-ins ... His quick first step and good ball handling ability enable him to get pass most defenders for easy drives ... Loves to get in the triple threat position and see how his defender is playing him and will adjust his game accordingly ... Smart has a good grasp of the game and always seems to be a step ahead of everyone else ... Once Rush gets in the lane he has the ability to convert 3-pointers the old fashion way due to his excellent free throw shooting ... Unselfish and a team player two words that many thought his brother (Jarron Rush of UCLA) never heard of in his short career ...

Weakness: While he certainly has plays solid defense he has yet to work on some of his defensive skills such as anticipation and playing the passing lanes better ... While Rush has some athleticism he just isn’t the explosive jump out the gym type player ... Rush received much unwanted attention and as the primary scorer on his team many opposing defenses focused on him causing Rush at times to produce some costly turnovers because of this he will need to improve his ball protection skills ... Mid-range game while good isn’t always consistent but has gotten better each year ... Since getting knocked around earlier in the season Rush has been hesitant to drive to the basket as he now seems more comfortable shooting from the outside …

chris-owens 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review milwaukee 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Has an NBA ready body that enables him to absorb contact in the lane ... Athletic runs the floor well and has great leaping ability ... Defensively Owens is a excellent shot blocker due to his explosive leaping ability and good timing ... When on the perimeter he likes to use a number of fakes to get his defender off their feet for the easy drive ... Good rebounder due to his leaping ability because of this he is also a threat to get easy put-backs ... Has decent touch around the basket when converting soft jumpers and tip-ins ... Finisher in transition as his athleticism and strong body ensure easy opportunities ... Versatile as he can play either forward positions ... Unlike many young players he possess solid defensive footwork ... Coach able player who has a burning desire to get better ... Hustles on every play whether it’s diving for lose balls or scrapping down low for the offensive rebound ... Team player who has no problem doing all the little things that coaches love ... Offensively he is comfortable with his back to the basket often Owens relies on a lot of power moves to score ...

Weakness: Offensively Owens is a average perimeter shooter who struggles to hit shots best when having to shoot off the dribble or when he is off balanced ... Could be without a position as he is a tweener who lacks the height to play power forward and is undeveloped when it comes to perimeter shooting that is required of small forwards ... Ball handling is somewhat adequate right now but will have to be upgraded if he is to play small forward in the NBA ... Susceptible to double teams and doesn’t do a good job of passing out of them ... Post footwork remains unrefined but has improved each year ... While he does get his share of free throw opportunities rarely does Owens benefit as he doesn’t convert a decent number of his attempts ... Has had some problems finishing around the basket when playing against taller players ...

jamal-sampson 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review utah95-04 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Owns a quick first step which allows him to get good penetration to the basket for easy lay-ups ... Defensively he gets easy steals due to his long arms and quick hands ... Very good at creating scoring opportunities for himself as he can score in a variety of ways ... Excellent rebounder at his position thanks to his longs arms ... His perimeter game has improved to the point that he is a threat to hit jumpers from mid-range out to the 3-point line ... Excellent finisher in the open court where he can make some impressive dunks ... Unselfish as he doesn’t try to be a ball hog ... Explosive as a scorer as he is capable of putting up some nice numbers ... Throws off defenders who play him for the drive by shooting the quick pull-up jumper ... Semi athletic player who is a decent leaper ...

Weakness: Shooting mechanics need to worked on as he doesn’t fully extend on his release instead he seems to flick it ... Defensively he has good anticipation skills but lacks solid defensive footwork to be a defensive standout ... Upper body strength is lacking which is one of the reasons why he struggles finishing when contact occurs on the drive ... While he has improved as a 3-point shooter he is still very streaky from the outside ... Doesn't seem all that comfortable driving to the right side of the basket ... Ball handling while decent could stand to be upgraded ... Shot selection is kind of questionable doesn’t really know what his limits are yet and seems to think every shot is a good one …

curtis-borchardt 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review orlando 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Could be the most skilled center in the draft offensively as he has some nice moves facing the basket … Excellent rebounder due to his hustling attitude and long arms because of those traits he is very good at getting rebounds out of position … Moves well without the ball often he will come up and set a high screen and then roll to the basket or take the mid range jumper … His range on his jumper allows him to play in a high post offense as he can shoot from 19 feet out … A elite shot-blocker Borchardt can change the dynamics of a game defensively … Despite being a semi-quick leaper it’s his super timing that he posses that makes up for any physical limitations … Unlike many big men he is very good at recognizing double teams and on top of that is a very capable passer from the post … Plays with a lot of emotion and doesn’t back down from anyone … Descent runner down the court as he is semi-athletic … Owns a soft touch around the basket capable of converting a high number of short bank shots or quick put-backs … Does a good job of keeping the ball high when moving around in the post … Soft hands capable of catching most lobs thrown into the lane … Has played with a ton of confidence this year something that plagued him a little over the past two seasons …

Weakness: Health will be a major issue for any team drafting him as he has injured his right foot for the past two seasons … Surprisingly his behind the basket skills are still in the developing stages … Needs to add weight and strength to his body which should really benefit him with his low post development … Because of constant leg injuries Borchardt’s foot strength is still behind with added strength it could help him in terms of durability … Doesn’t hold position all that well on the blocks as he is often pushed off when playing against bigger defenders … When posting up he doesn’t make himself all that wide which make sit hard for teammates to get a good angle when passing into the post … Defensively he is still learning how to play defense in the post without having to rely on blocking shots things like defensive footwork are a few areas of needed improvement … For a player with such a soft jumper it is kind of a mystery on why he is a semi average free throw shooter …

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Versatile player who has the ability to do a multitude of things on the court ... Has really worked on his 3-point jumper and he is now a legitimate threat from downtown ... Decent rebounder thanks to his hustle and tough demeanor on the glass ... Moves well without the ball as he can spot-up for the 3-point shot or cut to the basket for the lay-up ... Has some court vision because of this he is a decent passer ... Pretty good finisher in transition ... When defenders are guarding him out on the perimeter he can dribble past his opponent for the drive or shoot the short floater in the lane ... Has tremendous work ethic as he has refined his game each year ... Confidence has improved greatly this year something which once troubled him ... Comfortable with his back to the basket as he can convert numerous shots around the basket ... Team player who is unselfish and will look for the open teammate ...

Weakness: Will suffer in the NBA to find a position as he will struggle playing either forward slots ... Could stand to improve on shooting from mid-range on the perimeter ... Has a habit of getting careless with the ball so he could stand to improve on better ball protection ... Needs to improve his decision making due to his tendency to make poor passes which usually result in turnovers ... While his ball handling has improved from last year it wouldn’t hurt it he tweaked it a bit if he is to play the small forward position ... With his newfound range Barnes has settled at time shooting from the outside rather than driving to the basket ... Poor free throw shooter ... When driving in the lane Barnes can get out of control ...

Strengths: One of the toughest players in the country who will hustle for any loose balls on the floor ... Has great shooting touch simply makes the hardest shots look easy ... Good defensive player as he owns quick hands and posses solid footwork ... Despite his size he is a very good rebounder thanks to his quick leaping leaping ability ... Quick with the ball in his hands can usually break down most defenders off the dribble ... Once he gets penetration in the lane he can score in a assortment of ways via short pull-up or floater ... Owns solid perimeter skills as he can spot up for the 3-point shot and unlike many young players Dixon is solid from mid-range ... Although smallish he has no fear when going in the lane and most importantly knows how to score against bigger players ... Moves well without the ball often he will cut to the basket for the quick lay-up or shoot off the screen ... Wonderful work ethic very often you can find him in the gym working on his game ... On defense he posses solid anticipation skills and always looks to play the passing lanes for easy steals ...

Weakness: Classic tweener who is to small to play shooting guard and lacks the mentality to be a point guard ... Needs to add more weight to his slight frame as he will get bumped around in the NBA ... Has yet to show that he can run a offense something that will hurt him in the eyes of NBA teams ... Has a bad habit of gambling defensively which can sometimes leave his defensive assignment open ... Can go through periods where his jumper can become streaky ... Dixon could stand to work on better ball protection as he is susceptible to being careless with the ball at times ... On defense Dixon could be a post up target for bigger shooting guards in the NBA ...

sam-clancy 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review philadelphia 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Excellent post player really knows how to use his wide body to gain position on the blocks ... Mobile runs the court well and plays with a tremendous amount of energy ... Long wingspan and quick leaping ability enable him to block any shots that might come his way ... Good rebounder really knows how to use his body underneath the basket to set up excellent position ... Has very good post footwork and long arms enables him to get off shots over taller opponents ... Has very good touch around the basket range continues out to 18 feet ... Super athletic this alone makes him a valuable prospect ... Has a strong NBA ready body that can take contact and finish when hit in traffic... Because of his physical game, Clancy visits the free throw line often ...

Weakness: Biggest question facing Clancy concerns his height although listed at 6-7 he looks closer to 6-6 ½ which could be too small for him to be effective out the power forward spot ... Ball handling isn’t very good as he not comfortable with the ball in his hands ... Perimeter shooting is below average just doesn’t have enough range on his shot, needs to extend his range to at least 21 feet out ... Shot selection still isn’t the best although it is steadily improving ... Classic tweener too short to play power forward and not enough perimeter skills to play small forward ... Although he gets to the line often, he doesn’t take advantage of it as he has yet to become a solid free throw shooter but he is getting better ... Not much of a passer basically a black hole, the ball goes in and doesn’t come back out ...

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Good size combo guard who has the ability to play either backcourt positions ... Defensively he is a good defender in terms of European standards ... Has a lot of point guard qualities as he is blessed with good court vision, leadership, and a great feel for the game ... Pushes the ball hard up the court in order to initiate the fast break once started he does a good job of getting the ball to the right person to finish ... Offensively he has the ability to take his defender inside and outside ... Owns a semi quick first step that he uses to gain penetration in the lane ... When his feet are set he is a very capable three point shooter ... If the defender is guarding him for penetration Welsch is armed with a excellent mid-range jumper ... Unselfish as he will often penetrate and dish to wide open teammates ... Solid free throw shooter ...

Weakness: Defensively Welsch might struggle guarding quicker guards as lateral quickness isn’t the best ... Ball handling will need to be upgraded a tad if he is to play the point guard position ... Upper body strength needs to be improved upon as he has a slight body build and could use some extra weight ... Although he does have 3-point range he remains streaky ... Below average rebounder for a player his size at his position ... Still developing a point guard’s mentality due to his habit of setting up his own offense rather that his teammates ... Has a habit of making an easy shot harder than it has to be it’s almost as though he neglects to use what advantage he has over the defender ...

lonny-baxter 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review chicago 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Strong post player blessed with good hands and excellent post footwork ... Decently athletic player who can run the floor well and is rather quick around the basket for his size ... Above average rebounder who can contribute on the boards thanks to his strength and technique in terms of boxing out ... Gains excellent position in the post and usually after catching the ball he will power dribble to the basket where he will usually finish with a dunk or lay-in ... Baxter’s power game in the post and ability to absorb contact often lead him to easy free throw opportunities ... Owns a variety of low post moves like a drop step and owns a quick spin move that he enables him to get easy baskets ... Understands what his limits are on offense and rarely exceeds them ... Decent shot-blocker despite his is height in part to his great timing ...

Weakness: Height is a key concern among NBA teams as he looks as though he is 6-7 ... Doesn’t always dominate games like he should as he can go through periods of inconsistency ... Not very comfortable facing the basket could stand to add a dependable mid-range jump shot ... Not a very good post passer which makes him prone to double teams … Despite his ability to get to the free throw line rarely does he convert a high percentage of his free throws ... Should work on becoming more comfortable going to his left when playing in the low post ... Doesn’t have the quickest feet which will hinder him defensively ... Not super explosive in terms of leaping ability which explains why he isn’t good at getting rebounds out of position ... Really hasn’t improved all that much so one has to wonder about his potential as he might have hit the ceiling ...

jason-jennings 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review portland 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Jennings is a first rate shot-blocker due to his great timing and long arms ... Unlike many centers Jennings is very comfortable facing the basket where he can shoot a nice mid-range jumper out 17 feet ... One of the things that makes Jennings attractive is that he is very coachable and posses a very good work ethic ... When posting up Jennings can catch most passes thrown into the lane as he owns a pair of soft hands ... Shows good touch around the basket when shooting tip-ins and put-backs ... Understands what he can and can't do offensively and rarely tries to over step his physical bounds ... Due to his size he can absorb contact in the lane and draw fouls ... Once at the free throw line he is an uncommonly good free throw shooter for a player his size and position ...

Weakness: Despite being one of the tallest players in his conference rarely does he take full advantage of his size seems content to shoot over shorter player when he should physically post them up and power to the basket ... Doesn't excel in a fast paced offense as he isn't the fastest runner but more of a plodding runner ... Foul trouble hurts his production due to his tendency to go after every shot which can lead him to pick-up cheap fouls ... Passing skills leave a little to be desired though it's not because he lacks court vision ... Not a physical player for his size as Jennings doesn't really enjoy mixing it up in the paint ... Rebounding remains a sore spot as he isn't the most explosive leaper and doesn't get any rebounds out of position ... Plays the game game with a calm demeanor which has made some wonder about his intensity ... Should work on his offense with his back to the basket ...

freddie-jones 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review indiana 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Wonderful athlete who has explosive leaping ability … Is a solid passer often Jones would drive the lane and dish off to an open teammate … Owns a dangerous first step which enables him to drive past most defenders … Explosive leaper who can electrify the home crowd with a thundering dunk … Defensively he has the potential to be a solid defender as his quick hands and above average lateral quickness can frustrate opponents … After he passes his defender he likes to stop near the top of the free throw line where he can convert a nice floating jumper … Posses a strong body that enables him to absorb a great deal of contact in the lane which enables him to finish … Has become a much improved shooter off the dribble … Due to his athleticism he is a solid rebounder on the glass … Excellent free throw shooter … Has 3-point range on his jumper that once he gets into a rhythm he has the ability to make the shot with some regularity … Maneuvers through traffic effortless thanks to his supreme body control … Has learned how to take over games and dominate offensively … Possess a solid work ethic as can easily see the improvement every year in terms of production …

Weakness: Ball handling needs to be improved as there are times he doesn’t have full control of the ball … Height is a concern although he is listed at 6-4 he is more 6-2 ½ to 6-3 which will hurt his stock come draft day … When he is not playing in the open court he seems to struggle a bit as in the half court the lane is more congested … Wouldn’t be a bad idea if he made his body a little more toned as he is carrying some extra weight … While he gets good elevation on his jumper his perimeter shooting tends to be streaky which is mainly due to the fact that his shot lacks classic backspin … Has a bad habit of trying to over do it when going for the flashy play although to his credit he has toned down a bit … Confidence and consistency tend to waiver although this year he has clearly improved in those areas …

marcus-haislip 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review milwaukee 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Does a good job of using the glass when finishing around the basket ... Offensively Haislip has started to develop some nice low post moves as he can hit the fade away or make the short hook shot ... Very athletic can run the floor extremely well and is a explosive leaper ... Above average passer who does a good job of recognizing double teams ... Defensively he is a good shot-blocker thanks to long arms and explosive leaping ability ... Active player in the post gets a number rebounds do to his ability to do multiple jumps ... Great finisher in transition ... Has the ability to hit the three point shot when spotting up ... Quick around the basket and has improved as a help defender ... Possess soft touch Haislip has no problem converting shots high off the glass ... Lets the game come to him doesn’t rush or force many shots takes his time executing his offense … Excellent wrok ethic has steadily become better in various asspects of his game ...
Weakness: Has a bad habit of putting the ball on the floor when posting up making it easier for players to steal the ball ... Not all that comfortable facing the basket on the perimeter ... Should consider adding more girth to his frame ... Rebounding is a sore spot with all his physical tools on would think he would be a better rebounder ... Picks up dumb fouls sometimes on defense but to his credit has become better this past season ... Haislip is still behind in terms of fundamentals as he has relied on his athletic ability for most of his organized career ... Mid-range game remains suspect ... Defensively he is still learning how to play defense out on the perimeter ... Needs to make himself wider in the post as he doesn’t give his teammates the best target to pass to ... Offensively he is still needs to work on his game and must continue to improve his post footwork, which isn't bad but remains choppy ...

melvin-ely 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review clippers 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Wonderful shot blocker has long arms and great anticipation skills when defending opposing players … Offensively he has a soft touch around the basket capable of converting tip-ins and soft finger rolls … Mobile runs the court well although not a speedster by any means … Has excellent shot selection simply knows his limits offensively and doesn’t try to do what he can’t … Hustles on the glass because of this and his long arms he has become a very good rebounder … Work ethic is excellent as he has improved in every area from inconsistency to adding weight … Decent court awareness recognizes most double teams as a result he rarely gets caught in them … For his size he is a good ball handler as he is pretty mobile with the ball in the interior … Possesses good interior post footwork this is one of the reasons why he shoots such a high percentage on his shoots …

Weakness: While he is solid offensively with his back to the basket he could stand to improve on facing the basket more … Needs to add more upper body strength as sometimes he isn’t strong enough to finish the play after taking contact … Must be more disciplined on defense as sometimes he gets so caught up in blocking shots he gets out of position to rebound … Could stand to improve on adding a consistent fade-away jumper to his game … Poor post passer as he has that black hole thing going on once the ball goes in rarely does it come out … More range on his shot would benefit him greatly as he is only consistent from about 12 feet out …

juan-navarro 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review washington 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Smart player who has a solid grasp on the fundamentals of the game ... Owns a quick first step that enables him to easily gain an advantage over most defenders ... Offensively he is capable of shooting consistently from the perimeter ... Highly effective running off screens for the 3-point shot ... Does a good job of shooting the pull-up jumper off the dribble ... Due to his quickness he is a solid finisher in fast break situations ... Navarro is a excellent ball handler who can play point guard in short stretches of time ... Explosive as a scorer due to his ability to unload points in a hurry ... Has some leadership skills and enjoys having the ball in his hands during crucial moments in the game ... Very competitive player who pushes himself to a higher level to win the game whether it’s hustling or taking the charge on defense ... Has loads of international experience that alone should benefit him in the NBA ...

Weakness: Defensively he is a liability when playing bigger players as he is often a post-up target and seems to struggle guarding quicker guards ... Still learning how to involve teammates better in the offense ... At this moment he is more of a shooting than a point guard and has yet to develop a point guard’s mentality ... Size although listed at 6-4 he looks to be 6-3 so there will be questions as to what position he will be able to play ... Upper body strength should be upgraded ... While he shows flashes of brilliance he is still struggling with night in and night out consistency ... Shot selection isn’t the best as he over relies on the 3-point shot when it might be in his best interest to pass or drive ...
