2002 NBA Draft

jared-jeffries 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review washington 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Has excellent size for a small forward can shoot over most defenders ... Has the ability to use his long arms and agility to beat opposing defenders on penetration to the basket ... Very good offensive player facing the basket due to his ball handling often he can dribble past defenders for easy lay-ups ... Runs the court extremely well and is ambidextrous can finish in transition with both hands ... Good passer looks to find teammates and recognizes when double teams are occurring ... Solid rebounder due to his leaping ability and long arms this also enables him to be a solid shot-blocker ... Smart player who has a great feel for the game and is solid in the fundamental aspects of basketball ... Has a soft touch and decent post moves around the basket when he posts up ... The biggest thing Jeffries has worked on this off-season is his 3-point shot range which has become very consistent ... Has become more aggressive offensively as last year he had a tendency to defer to teammates …

Weakness: Although he has good post moves Jeffries isn’t very comfortable playing with his back to the basket as he is not a big fan of physical play ... Really needs to bulk up and gain more upper body strength as he has the ability to post up it’s just that his lack of strength makes it hard for him to establish an interior presence when rebounding and setting himself offensively ... Although he is getting better in this area his mid-range came could stand to be more consistent ... Perimeter game at times can become very streaky but shot selection could play a part in this as he as a tendency to rely too much on his outside game when penetrating to the basket could be in his best interest ... While he has greatly improved in this aspect from last year Jeffries doesn’t always play consistent as his game by game performance can vary ...

caron-butler 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review miami 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Versatile player who fits the mold of what a small forward should do pass, score, and rebound … Athletic loves to run the floor really excels playing in transition excellent finisher … Has a very quick first step this enables him to penetrate to the basket with ease once there he knows how to draw fouls … Blessed with quick hands Butler is already a impressive defender on defense opposing players must watch there dribble and passes or turnovers could be the result … Excellent rebounder has long arms and wonderful leaping ability to compensate for lack of height … Although still developing Butler's leadership qualities have made him a loud voice when his team is in a huddle … An above average shooter of the dribble usually will stop and shoot from about 16 feet … Solid ball handler often when Taliek Brown was prevented from getting the ball Butler was able to run the break … Has a strong body able to play in the NBA the moment he steps on the court … Explosive scorer can score in bunches when he gets hot … Fundamentally sound player who along with his athleticism , and potential make him a target for scouts this year… Has no problem creating offense for himself and due to his passing ability he has no problem creating for teammates either …

Weakness: Butler’s shot selection at this moment isn’t the best as he seems to think every shot is a good one but he will get better in time … While his defense is extremely good lateral quickness is a problem one has to wonder if the lighting quick small forwards and shooting guards of the NBA might be too much for him to guard … Not much of a 3-point threat as he only seems to be effective when his feet are set … Doesn’t always play focused has had times were his attention seemed to be elsewhere … Although he has the size in college to do this post up moves are far from being reliable … Ball protection needs to be worked on as he turns the ball over too much … Still has problems shooting consistently from 20 feet this is mainly due to his mechanics as he doesn’t always follow throw on his release ...

tito-maddox 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review houston95-02 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Standing at 6-4 this is a excellent size for a point guard and because of this he creates mismatches when smaller point guards defend him … Sees the floor very well has the court vision that not many at his position have literally sees plays before they happen … Dribbles the ball very well including a "Gary Payton imitation" spin that he uses to get past defenders … Wonderful slasher who can get in the lane for easy lay-ups or dishes to open teammates … Good rebounder and a tough kid who’s not afraid to bang underneath the glass … Good defender plays with heart and hustle … Loves running in the open court, can push the ball up the floor better than most players … Quickly recognizes how the defense is playing his team, and will make changes to disrupt the tempo … Very relaxed doesn’t really stress under tight pressure … Super quick first step makes him very difficult to defend … Has quick hands and good lateral quickness which is why he can take an opposing point guard out of the game… A very creative passer makes passes that you usually only see on the playground …

Weakness: Really needs to work on his jumper as for now, he is a liability from the perimeter … Like some young point guards, Maddox needs to learn on how to be more patient offensively… Needs to work on controlling the tempo of games, something that every great point guard has mastered … Not all that consistent, has his moments where he has disappeared late in games … Has a tendency to make some risky passes, something which will result in many turnovers in the NBA … Defensively he is pretty good but he has a bad habit of overplaying his opponent … Shot selection is not always it’s best although this is something that another year of school could cure … Needs to play more under control as he can have some games where he makes erratic decisions with the ball …

amare-stoudemire 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review phoenix 2002 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2002 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Plays basketball at it's highest in terms of intensity and aggressiveness doesn't back down from anyone ... Pure athlete very explosive has no problems dunking on defenders, and has a great motor; runs the court like a deer ... Excellent rebounder uses his long arms and shear quickness to out hustle opposing players under the boards this is one of the reasons why he is especially good at offensive boards ... Gets the majority of his points on dunks, and put-backs … Simply dominating on the inside although it's not because of his strength but his lateral quickness, this makes it very hard for defenders to get a feel for him defensively ... Has a strong NBA ready body, because of this he can finish most plays after contact occurs; he is also good at drawing enough contact to get to the free throw line … Has shown the leaping ability and lateral quickness to be an effective NBA shot-blocker, and has already become a good enough defender in high school to make opposing players change there shots … Tough minded has supreme confidence in his ability’s feels that he is the best, has overcome a lot of off the court problems, will not fold under pressure … Has started to get a nice consistent turnaround jump shot in the post … Greatly improved his face up game and ball handling as he can now step 15 feet from the basket and drive in the lane or shot the mid-range jumper from 15 feet and in … Has a great feel for opposing defense’s seems to feel when a double team is about to occur and will usually look for a open teammate to pass too …

Weakness: While he has overcome a lot of off the court problems, like his high school transcripts, transferring through 6 schools to become eligible, and his parents (mother was in jail & father has passed away) Stoudemire has been amazing on how he has handled it, but NBA teams will look deeply at these issues to see if he is solid and mature … Due to him being such a high-energy player he must learn how to pace himself during a game, because he has a tendency to pick up bad fouls by being overaggressive on defense … Why he has the ability to draw fouls and get to the line his free throw shooting prevents him from taking full advantage of this … Must be better disciplined offensively not because he throws up bad shots but at times tends to go for the spectacular play rather than going for a basic basket … While he has improved his perimeter game his jumper still remains streaky; so getting that more consistent would be of great benefit … Post moves could stand to be refined; although by no means is he lacking; it’s just that his post footwork needs a touch up and offensively he could use some variety … Although he has a manly body adding 10-15 pounds would ensure that he wouldn't get pushed off the blocks against the bigger players of the NBA ...
