dahntay-jones 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review boston 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Possess supreme athleticism ... Few players in the country have the combination of speed, power, and leaping ability of Jones ... Excels in the open court or fast break where his explosiveness makes for spectacular dunks ... Has an NBA ready body that enables him to take contact in the lane and draw fouls ... Defensively he has the capacity to be a standout due to excellent lateral quickness and solid anticipation skills ... Moves so well without the ball that he is a constant threat for an alley-oop ... When defended tightly his quick first step enables him to gain good separation from his defender... Plays with a great deal of intensity and emotion wants to win every game ... Is a better shooter when his feet are set as he squares his body up ... Owns cat like body control that is essential for a slasher as he can make adjustments in the air depending on how the defense plays him ... Above average rebounder due to his athleticism and hustle ... Due to his explosiveness he is a great finisher around the basket...

Weakness: The biggest area of concern for Jones is that he is a below average shooter from the perimeter... Ball protection could stand improvement as he can be turnover prone ... Let's his emotions get the best of him which can lead to quick fouls ... Doesn't have the court vision needed to create scoring opportunities for his teammates ... Not a threat from three point range. Opposing teams often back off him and dare him to take the 3-point shot... Struggles to hit the jumper off the dribble where he remains terribly inconsistent... Still tends to make bad judgments on the court ... Doesn't always use his size and strength to his advantage when guarded by smaller defenders ... Ball handling is average at best. He simply hasn't needed to improve in this area due to Duke's solid group of guards over the past two year's but will have to in the NBA ... Many have feel his game hasn't grown as much as expected when he first transferred from Rutgers ...

james-lang 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review new-orleans 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Has NBA size to withstand the physical demands of playing in the lost post... Offensively he shows solid touch to convert a high number of shots off the glass ... Understands how to use his body to set-up good position on his defender... Mentally tough player who does not stray away from physical contact... Possesses advanced rebounding techniques for his age as he does an excellent job of tapping the ball back to himself when he is out of position ... Defensively he shows surprisingly quick hands to strip the ball from his assignment... For his size Lang runs the floor very well... When blocking shots he has a great sense of timing ... Plays the game very aggressively as he constantly looks to attack the basket... Excellent offensive rebounder... Does a great job of quickly putting the ball back up on put-backs ... Takes up space in the lane to disrupt opposing guards drives ... Owns a pair of soft hands that enable him to control most passes thrown his way ... Decent athlete for a player of his size and girth ... Unselfish player who is a solid passer from the post... Does a great job of creating contact in the lane to draw fouls ...

Weakness: Fluctuating weight will be a concern as he might never gain full control ala Oliver Miller... Shot blocking ability could suffer due to his average quickness when getting off the floor... Must continue to develop his back to the basket moves when posting up ... Will need to continue to work on his conditioning to improve his stamina ... At this stage in his career his post footwork is still in need of refinement... Can play with too much aggressiveness when playing defense which leads him to be foul prone ... Needs to expand his perimeter shooting range out to 15 feet... Will need to improve on his ball handling if he is to play power forward in the NBA ... Double teams tend to effect his production because of his still developing court awareness ... Will be a project for whoever drafts him and could take 2-3 years before being NBA ready ... Defensively Lang could stand to improve on his lateral movement... Below average free throw shooter..

zarko-cabarkapa 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review phoenix 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: When facing the basket, he shows an assortment of perimeter skills ... For a player his size, he is extremely mobile showing the ability to run the floor with ease ... Wonderful set shooter who when given enough time, can drain the three point shot with regularity ... Possesses good movement without the ball which enables him to set-up for open jumpers ... When he does drive to the basket he is a dangerous set-up man for low post scorers to get easy looks ... Versatile player who can create mismatches with his ability to shoot the ball... Shows excellent ball handling skills which allow him to bring the ball up or create fast break opportunities ... Has enough dribbling skills to drive past defenders ...Shows above average court vision for his size ... When his feet are set he has the ability to make the mid-range jumper ... Unselfish player who sees double teams well and reacts quickly ... Possess a solid work ethic that should continue to develop his potential ...Has the physical tools to be a competent defender such as long arms and decently quick hands ...

Weakness: Defensively he lacks many of the basic skills such as anticipation and intensity ... Needs to improve on gaining lateral quickness defensively as quick players can trouble him ... Would greatly benefit by adding more weight and strength to his upper body ... While he has great height he is not much of a rebounder due in part to him often being out of position and lacking body strength ... Settles too often for shooting from the outside instead of driving to the basket ... Back to the basket skills are still in their developmental stages ... Ball protection should be worked on as he has a tendency to be turnover prone ... Not a big fan of physical contact ... Can become frustrated when contact occurs ... Doesn't always use his height to his advantage when played by smaller defenders ... Not a very efficient shooter off the dribble which could be due to the fact that he doesn't get good separation from his defenders ... Although, with improved foot speed he could greatly improve in this aspect ...

matt-bonner 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review chicago 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Patient player on offense who doesn't rush many shots ... Uses a nice number of fakes to get his defender in the air for the open look ... Possesses legitimate three point range ... Competent rebounder within his area ... Tough kid who has a ton of confidence is his game ... Not much of a low post scorer but when he does he is able to shoot the nice turnaround jumper... Possesses a good understanding of the game ... Great spot up shooter from mid-range or from behind the three point line ... Moves well without the ball ... Really excels in the high post where he is a threat to do a multitude of things ... Plays every game with intensity like few of his peers can ... Did a great job of becoming one of Florida's team leaders this past season ... Has developed a nice reliable hook shot from the block or in the lane ... His size tends to create mismatches as he can shoot over most players and can post up smaller defenders ...

Weakness: Below average athlete who doesn't have much speed or leaping ability ... Back to the basket moves are rarely used as he isn't very comfortable ... Moves very mechanical there is little to no fluidity in his movements ... Doesn't run the court all that well ... Not a very creative scorer... Lacks the ball handling to take opposing defenders off the dribble ... This could cause him to struggle to get his shot off in the NBA ... Defensively he will have problems guarding player as he lacks the lateral quickness to keep up ... Not a very good shooter off the dribble due to Bonner's slow release ... Because he is such a perimeter oriented player he doesn't draw fouls from his defender... Not a bonafide tweener but enough of one to question who he will be able to guard as power forwards are too strong and small forwards too fast... Lack of athleticism prevents him from getting rebounds out of position ... Will not be a shot blocking force at all despite size due to his lack of explosiveness ...

troy-bell 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review boston 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Quick first step allows him to penetrate on command and because of this he does a solid job of drawing fouls for easy scores ... Explosive scorer who can reel off some big points in a hurry ... Solid ball handler who always looks to push the ball up the court to ignite the fast break where he is a solid finisher ...Has some leadership qualities and when the game is on the line he wants the ball... For his size he is an excellent leaper which explains why he is a capable rebounder at his position ... Has the potential to be a proficient defender due to his exceptional quickness and fast hands ... Smart player who understands how to play the passing lanes to get easy steals ... Possesses wonderful body control when he's driving to the basket he has the ability to adjust in the air to make acrobatic lay-in's ... Has improved on moving without the ball, something that can be hard for players like Bell who prefer to have the ball in thier hands to create ... Due to his work ethic, he has enhanced certain aspects of his game each year.

Weakness: Bell isn't what you would call a pure point guard who looks to set-up teammates first ... He prefers to shoot first, pass second ... Shot selection isn't the best as he settles for way too many 3-point attempts ... Average decision maker with the ball in his hands due to his tendency to get careless ... While he is a very good defender, Bell at times can overplay his man which can lead to some quick fouls ... At this point he is an average long-range shooter, so getting consistency would be of great benefit ... He's still learning how to get teammates involved in the offense which exemplifies his need for overall growth in his point guard skills ... Can struggle sometimes when playing in a half court offense as opposing defenders will often sag off him to cut his penetration leaving him to settle for outside jumpers ... Inconsistency plagued him constantly during his junior campaign ... Turnovers continue to trouble Bell at times as he can make some questionable passes and has a habit of trying to make the spectacular play ...

malick-badiane 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review houston 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Exceptional athlete who can run the floor and leap like few can at his size ... Defensively Badiane shows above average shot blocking instincts, this coupled with his long arms and leaping ability make him quite a presence ... Although he can be physically outmatched he does a great job of getting rebounds ... Excellent finisher in transition where his leaping ability enables him to finish with flair... Solid ball handler for someone with his size ... Great out of position rebounder... Has a tremendous work ethic and is very coachable ... Has loads of potential... Shows above average touch around the basket on put-backs and lay-ups ... Really looks to attack the rim on every possession ... This aggressiveness allows him to draw a good number of fouls from his defender... Decent passer who plays unselfish ... Solid offensive rebounder who wastes little time on put-backs ... Has three point range on his jumper when his feet are set... Long wingspan and mobility allow him to be an adequate help defender... Plays the game with a tremendous amount of energy and desire ...

Weakness: Offensively he is still a work in progress, as he does not have much in his repertoire ... Will need to add more muscle to his upper body if he is to stand the physical play of the low post... Still learning basketball's fundamental aspects as he has gotten by with his athletic gifts ... Doesn't have a full understanding of the game ... Can be turnover prone when he rushes himself... Doesn't always make the greatest court decisions ... Post foot work is unrefined although with his great coordination this could be quickly relieved ... Can pick up quick fouls when playing defense as Dadiane can be over aggressive ... Will need to be more consistent with his mid-range jumper... Lacks the strength to gain good position on the block ... Back to the basket skills will need to be improved as they are limited ... Not all that comfortable when double teams occur as he doesn't always recognize them in time ... Despite the fact the he draws fouls his below average free throw shooting stops him from taking full advantage ... Might be a project for whoever drafts him should expect to invest a year or two before expecting anything significant... Defensively he has a bad habit of trying to go for every shot... Rumors has been rampant that his age could be false ...

keith-bogans 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review milwaukee 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Very athletic player who can explode to the basket and dunk with authority ... Excels in the open court where he has the ability to finish in a number of ways including reverse lay-ups, switching hands, or by drawing contact... Capable ball handler that can play point guard for a short period of time as Bogans is a solid post passer... Intelligent player who has a solid grasp of the fundamentals ... Has an NBA ready body strong enough to take a hit in the lane and finish a play ... Has 3-point range on his jumper... Good rebounder due to his leaping ability ... Competitive player who wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line ... Has shown leadership qualities at times but hasn't always displayed them due to his deferring of Tayshaun Prince ... Despite last year's slump, Bogan's work ethic should never be questioned ... Is a solid positional defender who does a good job of staying in front of his man ... Has the ability, when he gets hot, to take over a game ...

Weakness: When he is struggling with his jumper, his confidence has a tendency to wavier... Should concentrate on getting himself to be a better team player, often he felt the need to take games over all by himself... Mechanics on his jumpshot should be seriously tweaked as his jumper has a slow setup which goes from his waist to over his head ... Height, although he is listed at 6-5, on appearance he looks to be 6-4 so one has to wonder how this will effect his play against the bigger shooting guards of the NBA ... Focus wasn't all that great last season as he struggled to find a rhythm ... Has yet to develop a consistent mid-range game which is a must for a shooting guard ... Shot selection isn't all that great as he tends to fall in love with shooting from the outside when it could be to his advantage to drive to the basket... Seems to struggle at times when he is playing in a half court offense as opposed to an open court offense ... Looks as though he might be a step slow in the NBA as his foot-speed is not the best...

luke-ridnour 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review seattle 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Possesses a great understanding of the game ... Really looks to get teammates involved in the offense ... Has legitimate three point range on his jumper ... Solid shooter of the dribble from mid-range ... After Ridnour breaks down the defense on his penetration, he is a threat to dish off to open teammates ... Shows the kind of court vision that enables him to be a creative passer ... Great free throw shooter ... Has all the qualities that point guards need: PG mentality, court awareness, desire and leadership ... Quality ball handler who can take opposing guards off the dribble ... Really looks to push the ball up the court to ensure fast break opportunities for his team ... Defensively he is blessed with quick hands and the savvy to play the passing lanes for easy steals ... Is a gym rat who has the kind of desire and work ethic coaches love ... Excels in an up tempo offense where his flashiness and creativity merge ... When his jumper is falling he can put a great deal of pressure on the opposing defense ...

Weakness: Will have to improve on getting his upper body strengthened ... Athletically he is not the possessor of blinding quickness or leaping ability ... Some have questioned Ridnour toughness ... Lacks the explosiveness needed to consistently penetrate to the basket at will ... Decision making isn't always the best as he will tend to make the overly flashy play which usually leads to turnovers ... Defensively Ridnour struggles to guard physical point guards, especially those with post up abilities ... Mid-range shooting isn't as consistent as one would like ... Many have questioned his toughness because there have been times where he's been bullied and did not react well to the physical contact ... Defensively his overall lateral quickness will have to be improved upon ... His lack of strength tends to work against him as he doesn't always finish after contact in the lane...

zaur-pachulia 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review orlando 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Back to the basket moves are highly advanced ... Runs the court very well for a player his size ... Solid rebounder who really does a good job boxing his man out under the glass ... Keeps the ball high and doesn't put it on the floor when in the low post ... Good finisher around the basket where he can convert a number of shots with ease ... Tough minded player that doesn't shy away from contact ... Great passer for someone his size ... Uses his body to create contact in the lane to draw fouls ... Sees double teams before they occur... Versatile in that he stretch the opposing defense by shooting out to the 18 foot jumper ... Has the ball handling ability to create shots of the dribble ... Although 19 he already has 3 years of international experience and loads of potential... Really gets himself wide in the post to give teammates a good target to pass into ... Patient offensive player that rarely tries to exceed his physical limits ...

Weakness: Can be a little foul prone as he is still learning how to play effective low post defense ... Needs to continue to add more upper body strength to his physique ... Will have to upgrade his ball protection as he is still a little careless with the ball ... There has been many rumors circulating around about his age although he is listed as being bom in 1984 some say it is more closer to 1982 ... Post footwork has improved tremendously over the past two years but could still stand some refinement ... Pachulia still has to work on learning how to think the game through ... While he is athletic he isn't a explosive enough leaper to be a premier shot blocker... Shows soft touch from mid-range but he will need to display the confidence and consistency to make the shot ... Not what you would call a fluid player as his movements are a little mechanical ... Still a undeveloped prospect who wasn't given much actual game time to develop his game this past season ...

marcus-banks 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review memphis 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Defensively he has NBA skills as he is blessed with quick hands and solid lateral quickness ... Has a unique NBA ready body that is both strong and sturdy ... Can seemingly drive to the lane at will thanks to his great hesitation crossover move that gives him good separation from his defender... Once in the lane he has the uncanny ability to hang in the air and wait for the defense to commit before making his move ... Excellent rebounder for his size ... After he gets the ball he really looks to initiate the fast break ... Once he penetrates into the lane he is a hard player to stop as he is able to rely on his biggest asset which is the drive and dish ... Has developed solid leadership skills often he is a steady influence over his teammates ...Thanks to his wonderful court vision and creativity he has the ability to make difficult passes with pinpoint precision ...

Weakness: Height will become a big question for him come draft day. Although listed at 6-2, upon appearance he looks to be closer to 6-0 to 6-1 ... At this point Banks is not a very efficient shooter from the perimeter as he struggles with consistency ... Due to his height he is a post-up target for bigger guards who usually can get position on him ... Can get frustrated on offense if his shot isn't failing which usually leads to him taking questionable shots ... Still needs to work on developing into a better shooter off the dribble ... Decision making when the ball is in his hands has been vastly improved since last year but turnovers still can plague him at times ... Still learning as a point guard how to control the tempo of a game better... Still learning how to make players around him better but he is steadily improving in this aspect of the game ...

nick-collison 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review seattle 2003 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2003 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Shows highly advanced back to the basket skills where he has an assortment of moves ... These moves include the up and under, hook shot, and even the turnaround jumper... Decently mobile player who has no problem running the court... Post footwork is refined and very coordinated ... Excellent passer for his size who has no problem recognizing teammates on the floor... Owns a nice 16 foot jumper that he can make with some regularity ... Fundamentally sound player who has a great understanding of the game ... Despite his lack of explosiveness Collison shows excellent technique at boxing his man out... Fine outlet passer to help ignite the fast break ... Ball handling ability is above average for his position ... Excels in the high post offense where he maximizes his ability with his passing, dribbling or shooting from mid-range ... Patient when he posts up as he uses a number of body jabs and pumpfakes to get his defender off their feet... Possess soft touch around the basket where he is a great finisher... Moves extremely well without the ball... Has three point range on his jumper ...

Weakness: Athletically he is not a possessor of great quickness or leaping ability ... Could stand to shoot the mid-range jumper with more consistency ... Defensively he can struggle to guard strong physical players making him foul prone ... Although he has greatly improved Collison can still go through periods of play where he doesn't perform consistently ... Will not be a super shot blocker on the NBA level because of his lack of explosiveness ... Doesn't have those strong vice grip like hands that most high tier power forwards possess ... Can try to do a little too much to take his defender off the dribble from the high post... This can make for some costly turnovers ... Not always aggressive at taking the ball to the basket to draw fouls ... Despite his soft touch around the basket Collison is a mediocre free throw shooter...
