2001 NBA Draft

damone-brown 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review philadelphia 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Athletic combo forward who is super quick when facing the basket in isolation ... Provided mismatches most of the time because of the fact that he was too quick for most power forwards and too big for most small forwards ... Comfortable when facing the basket where he can make the jumper from about 17 feet and in ... Has become a good free throw shooter ... Has a very good touch around the basket he is able to convert floaters and put-backs with regularity ... Can play above the rim is a threat to go for the alley-oop ... Not what you would call a power rebounder he gets the majority of rebounds by putting himself in good position ... Average defender although he does have the ability to become better ...

Weakness: Really needs to add some serious upper body muscle and weight ... Brown has a habit of falling in love with his jumper ... Has the one thing that NBA gm's hate is that he is a classic tweener doesn't have the muscle to play power forward and doesn't have the ball handling or shooting ability to play small forward ... Can have stretches during the season where he can be inconsistent although this season those moments have been less than in the past ... Below average passer who has problems recognizing double teams ...

alvin-jones 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review philadelphia 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Another one of the great shot-blockers in this years draft class thanks to his great vertical leaping ability and timing ... Has really came along this year offensively now has the ability to shoot a turnaround jump shot and has added a hook shot ... Really knows how to use his body and draw contact in the post ... Excellent rebounder definitely one of the best in the ACC conference this past year ... As mobile as you can be for a 7- foot center easily out maneuvers opposing interior players ... Has a little bit of a mean streak in him plays with a lot of fire ... Has really shown a willingness to learn this year about the fundamentals of the post ... Very athletic has an impressive 37-inch vertical and runs the floor well for a center ...

Weakness: One of the most frustrating things about Jones is that he has had bouts with inconsistency throughout his career ... Could stand to work on his release when he shoots the ball often he doesn't put enough ark into the shot ... Work ethic has come into question because of the fact Jones hasn't always been in the greatest of condition ... Has a habit to pick up dumb fouls during the game although this became less of a issue this year he could still learn how to control his body more when defending ... Post footwork still is a little choppy to say the least ... Offensive game is still growing he's just now adding more moves to his repertoire ... Not a very good free throw shooter ...

jamaal-tinsley 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review vancouver95-01 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Is one of the most creative ball handlers in the college landscape uses a variety of spins, crossovers and stutter steps to get by defenders ... Has a NBA body that usually allows him to routinely out muscle opposing point guards ... Really knows how to setup teammates with his excellent court vision ... Is a good penetrater that can get in the lane and finish with a vast array of difficult lay-ups ... Has super quick hands on defense, which make him a threat to steal the ball at any time ... Is a good rebounder for a player at his position ... Has that Dennis Johnson like quality in that he may not be the best 3-point shooter but he can make the big shot when his team needs it ... Has great size for a point guard ...

Weakness: Not the greatest shooter from the 3-point line or the perimeter ... Sometimes he rushes himself at the free throw line could stand to get a free throw routine to relax himself ... Shot selection not the best at times ... Can sometimes lose control when trying for the flashy play, which often lead to turnovers ... Needs to work on his shooting mechanics often when he shoots he doesn't fully extend his shooting hand ... Doesn't look like he'll be a big scorer in the NBA so teams drafting will do so with the knowledge that he is a pure set-up man ...

samuel-dalembert 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review philadelphia 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Excellent Shot-blocker one of those rare players who can impact a game without even scoring ... Runs the floor well can beat most players down the court including guards ... Athletic unlike most centers Dalembert has wonderful quickness as well as extreme mobility in the paint ... Has a nice touch around the basket can convert on most put-backs and flip-ins ... Has that big "P" word potential that gm's and scouts love ... Reach and elevation make him descent rebounder ... Coach-able has the will to learn and with a good coach Dalembert will be like a sponge and soak everything up ... Plays within his limits doesn't really try to do things that he can't do ...

Weakness: Needs to learn how to be better disciplined on defense often he was out of position to rebound ... Offense is still years from being at the NBA level doesn't really have any range other than when he gets the ball a few feet from the basket ... Has a bad habit of picking up fouls again this has to due with him becoming more disciplined on defense ... Because of his lack of playing experience Dalembert is still learning the game fundamentally ... Upper body strength needs to be enhanced could stand to add 15-20 more pounds ... Poor free throw shooter ... While he has good touch around the basket his post footwork remains very choppy ... Poor passer and doesn't protect the ball very well which often resulted in turnovers ...

gerald-wallace 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review sacramento 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Quite simply Wallace might be one of the most explosive leapers and perhaps one of the most athletic players in the draft ... Excellent transition game a sky-walker who can finish with the best of them ... Can create off the dribble as evident by his ability to draw fouls by gliding in the lane ... Hustles and can play pretty good defense for a player his age thanks to his quickness and hustle ... Wonderful rebounder for a player of his size due to his quick hops ... Has the ability to hit the jumper from about 20 feet out ... Is starting to develop a solid mid range game although this is still a work in progress ... The biggest thing that will get Wallace drafted is that he has a huge amount of potential which will make it impossible for gm's to pass him by ...

Weakness: Has still not refined his jump shot as of right now he is not a threat to hit the 3-point shot ... Could stand to tone up his body more and develop some upper body strength as he is a little on the thin side ... Turns the ball over a lot considering that he doesn't usually have the ball in his hands this speaks a little bit about his carelessness and his needed improvement when it comes to ball handling ... Shot selection still isn't all that great although he did make some improvement ... Mid range jumper has a tendency to go hot and cold must continue to work on his follow through so his jumper can be more accurate ... Gets to the free throw line but doesn't take advantage because of his poor free throw shooting although I think this has more to do with his confidence than ability as in the beginning of the year he was making his free throws ... Must become a better passer and know when to give the ball up ...

roots 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft ReviewBrother: Jason Collins

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Versatile player that can play all 3 frontcourt positions although he is best suited to play power forward ... Has the ability to take players inside the lane or shoot outside from about 15 feet and in ... Team player doesn't look to pad his own stats at the expense of the team ... Fundamentally sound player who can play the physical or finesse game ... Fluid athlete who runs the floor well loves to get out and finish on a fast break ... Has a great set of hands that enables him to catch the ball and then use his soft touch in the paint for easy scores ... Has excellent ball handling skills, which make him a threat to drive in the lane from the perimeter ... Good positional defender blessed with good lateral quickness and the ability to keep himself between the opposing player and the basket ...

Weakness: With all of his talent and size one would think he would be a force of the boards but it is just the opposite just doesn't show any intensity on the glass ... Needs to develop more of a killer attitude during the game and learn how to dominate ... Isn't a explosive athlete just an average one ... Doesn't have any kind of shot-blocking presence because he's a poor leaper ... Needs to continue to work on his back to the basket skills as there can be times when he doesn't finish plays ...

jeryl-sasser 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review orlando 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

roots 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft ReviewBrother: Jason Sasser

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: Versatile player who can do a number of things well like pass, rebound and score to name a few ... Has the ability to play 3 positions point guard, shooting guard, and small forward ... Very good at penetrating were his ball handling and height make him very difficult to defend ... Excellent passer who is very unselfish with the ball often looks to set up teammates this is the number one reason why teams never focused on double teaming him ... Has 3-point range on his shot ... Has the potential to be a very good defender because of his long arms and great lateral quickness ... Rebounds extremely well for a player at his position ...

Weakness: Really doesn't have any upper body muscle could stand to spend some time in the weight room ... While Sasser has shooting range his perimeter and 3-point shot are very streaky ... While he definitely has the potential to be an excellent defender as of right now he still needs to learn on how to focus on defending better ... While his current post up game is good it still can be better wouldn't hurt if he added a consistent turn around jumper to his game ... What position will he play kind of a tweener not strong enough to play small forward, not a good enough shooter to play shooting guard, and not much experience at playing the point guard position ...

joseph-forte 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review boston 2001 NBA Draft - The Draft Review

2001 Scouting Report:

Strengths: One of the best mid-range shooters to come out of college in some time ... Loves to create off the dribble can freeze his defender by faking the 3-pointer then blow by them for the 16 footer ... Wonderful rebounder for his size (6-3 1/2) due to his reading of where the ball will go and his good leaping ability ... Has 3-point range and once he sinks a couple watch out Forte can catch fire in a hurry ... Uses a nice little right to left crossover to get in the lane once there his excellent body control helps him get off many tough shots ... Quick hands has become a pretty good defender can come up with easy steals if his man isn't careful with his dribble ... Unlike most young players Forte actually follows his shots which often resulted in easy lay-ups ... Very confident in his ability can shoot for 1-15 and then make the game winner ... For all his scoring Joseph is a pretty descent passer .... Clutch player wants the ball in his hands when th games on the line ... Explosive scorer can single handily bring a team back all by himself ...

Weakness: Many scouts wonder about his size will he be able to play the NBA shooting guard position at 6-4 ... Has a tendency to throw up ill-advised shots this must be worked on as shot selection is a major skill to know what your limits are ... Can rush himself offensively and get careless with the ball ... Although he is a good 3-point shooter he's not exactly what I would call a pure shooter consistently from that distance ... Ball handling needs to be worked on in terms off better ball protection ... Although his upper body strength is much improved it is still a little far from being NBA ready ...
